For me, it was Paris. Not an AIBU, I know

OP posts:
feemcgee · 28/01/2022 09:59

Honolulu.

DePfeffoff · 28/01/2022 10:00

I liked the old part of Nice, but the sea front was distinctly meh.

silverbubbles · 28/01/2022 10:03

Taj Mahal

Maybe I'd seen too many 'glossy' pictures before

Stonehenge
Take that back!
CrumpleHornedSnowcack · 28/01/2022 10:05

Dubai

BaconMassive · 28/01/2022 10:05

Grand Canyon.

Just a big hole.

CaliforniaDrumming · 28/01/2022 10:08

Thailand????!!!!!

Infinitemoon · 28/01/2022 10:09

This is why I just stay at home !
I’ve had all sorts of holidays, but I’ve come to realise that nothing beats my own bed and walking my dog around my home town.

I am with you on this. Being a tourist is pretty ridiculous. I wish I had been alive in the 18 century and had gone on a Grand Tour of Europe. I can take it or leave it now tbh.

I think travel has climaxed It just isn't as enjoyable now the masses are on to it and with climate change etc

MangoLipstick · 28/01/2022 10:10

Paris for me too.
Found it very dirty, got followed/heckled by groups of men, quite unfriendly. Not a good experience.
I’ve been back since then and had a better time but still don’t see the hype.

Brainwave89 · 28/01/2022 10:11

Venice- a city which in effect is largely a tourist trap with no people in the centre. As a consequence, restaurants and hotels are very expensive and the food is poor.

Another vote for Dublin. Just awful. It's unclean, pick-pockets everywhere, no nice buzz at all, grey and miserable.
In its defence Dublin was nice pre celtic tiger "boom".

Relaxed, friendly, quaint, the local bar & restaurant staff were chatty and warm etc.

This was in the late 90s. When I visited again after working abroad in 2001, it was like a different place.

whatthehelldowecare · 28/01/2022 10:13

Hawaii.

It was fine, but didn't offer anything you couldn't get in Europe without the 27 hour trip..

G5000 · 28/01/2022 10:14

I have often disappointed visiting various cities and landmarks specifically in the US, but I finally figured out why. It's the expectations. My dear American friends describe everything in superlatives. 'OMG you HAVE to go there, it's AMAZZINGG!' So my brain translates this to the 8th wonder of the world. And then I'm inevitably disappointed.

If they had described it in European, 'Nice place, you might want to check it out', I would probably like most of those places better.

Much prefer being alive now where I can travel solo across the world without having to be escorted by a guide.
Maerchentante · 28/01/2022 10:15

Paris - Dirty, no bins so we had to carry an rubbish around until we returned to the hotel

Dublin - Just "another big city", though I loved the day trips I took

Neuschwanstein Castle - You get herded through the rooms, barely enough time to look at anything, one group leaves a room and the next enters it

Love Munich, usually go every other year for work, the one thing I would avoid like the plague, however, is Oktoberfest. Just not my thing and I don't drink beer

ColMustardInTheLibrary · 28/01/2022 10:16

Another vote for NYC.

CloudPop · 28/01/2022 10:17

@Mamette

Niagra Falls.
Totally agree with this
Hobbesmanc · 28/01/2022 10:17

Deffo agree with Dubai- why people go there for fun. Also wouldn't rush back to Reykjavik. If you are unlucky with the weather (and we went in August) there's very little to do and it's so expensive.

Malta won't get a return visit either- Greek islands are much better

TheDoveFromAboveCooCoo · 28/01/2022 10:19

Bowness on Windermere - expected a quiet relaxing and romantic weekend and instead had to constantly dodge bus loads of mainly Chinese tourists. All pubs and cafes were full, shops were packed, long wait for the boat cruises because they were so full.

We choose the quieter areas now.

Yes a good point but everywhere is so built up and busy. Everything is fed to us by the travel industry, there is no mystery. Let me have my fantasy please. Smile

CrimbleCrumble1 · 28/01/2022 10:21

I’m just looking back at my wonderful holiday photos of these these underwhelming shite places.

Pamlar · 28/01/2022 10:21

Euro Disney -the sullen-ist place on earth!
(My in laws generously paid for us all to go so I had to smile and pretend to enjoy the surly staff, lack-lustre attractions and hideous food)

IvorCutler · 28/01/2022 10:23

Lol about Dublin. This thread isn’t doing much for Irish tourism 😂 I’m a non native but have been living here for half of my life. I love it and I like the grit. It is expensive though.

Ok:) In the 18th century though, many of us POC would have been slaves so not allowed to travel or couldn't afford to. Terrible for climate change of course, but there are advantages to the democratisation of the travel. Otherwise we would only have old white men telling us what they saw on their travels.
