For me, it was Paris. Not an AIBU, I know

@Infinitemoon absolutely. LA would be horrendous as a tourist but if you’re there with a local it’s fantastic, you get the rhythm of the place - valet parking, the coolest restaurants, house parties. I’ve been to LA about 4 times and it’s really grown on me - but I can absolutely see how a tourist would be like wtaf. Similar NYC, and probably London - your experience is vastly improved if you have a local showing you around.

I think it depends what your expectations were before you went with a lot of the places mentioned. I went backpacking in my 20s and did it on a shoe string, I did the usual route most people take se Asia, Australia and NZ. I will agree with a lot of the things said, like Bangkok is dirty and you kind of feel like you constantly have to be alert to thieves etc (my friend had her bank card stolen and her account cleared whilst we were there). I did actually enjoy it there despite this, it was something a bit different. If I went there now for a holiday or with my young family I'd hate it, I'd say horrible dirty place, full of dodgy people!

Australia, totally agree stuck in the 80s, there are some very weird towns out in the middle of nowhere, I described it at the time as a journey back to the 80s. When people asked about it when I came home (as people in the uk often think it's this amazing place) I said beyond the weather, a bit of nice scenery and interesting wildlife there isn't an awful lot going on there. Bondi beach is very much "is that it?", packed and just not that nice. Walk 20 min to the next cove it's quieter and much nicer.

Some people said Edinburgh, I quite like it, although there isn't loads going on there, a weekend is plenty and everywhere shuts when the pubs do, no take aways, which is a disaster when you are starving at midnight after a night in the pub.

All depends on expectations and what you are there for, honeymoon vs city break vs family hol vs backpacking... etc you'd want very different things!

Amsterdam. Hated every second. I love cycling but my God, it is terrifying trying to walk anywhere with the crazy cyclists. Also just far too busy in general. I would never return based on the cyclists alone, never mind all the other stuff we hated!

StrictlyAFemaleFemale · 28/01/2022 08:41

@Aloha7373

Brighton…

Shingle beach, run down buildings, people in crisis everywhere, highest rates of violence in the UK… depressing craphole!

YES!! And every time you try and tell people this you get dismissed and poo-pooed (sp?).

San Fransisco.

FriNightBlues · 28/01/2022 08:41

New Zealand.

As someone said: a long way to go to end up in 1970s Wales

BonnesVacances · 28/01/2022 08:43

Marbella was dreadful. Not my kind of place at all, so I'm not sure why I went. Confused My kind of place is wandering around, people watching and absorbing the vibe. The vibe in Marbella was up people's arses. Grin I'm reassured by the love for Naples on this thread. I think I might like it there. I recommend Malaga if you like a relaxed friendly vibe and aimless wandering with a bit of Picasso thrown in.

Toanewstart22 · 28/01/2022 08:47

Oh and my number 1

Tenby

Shudder at the memory.

theDudesmummy · 28/01/2022 08:47

Dublin (have lived in Ireland for the last two years but because of pandemic had never been to Dublin). Had to pick up DD at Dublin airport before Xmas so went early to have a look around, with much excitement to finally see it. Much smaller, greyer and more ordinary than I imagined (sorry Dubliners). And this was two days before Xmas. As some other people have said, give me Galway any day! (I am originally a Londoner).

dorkfink · 28/01/2022 08:47

Istanbul is literally the best city break imaginable.

Istanbul is my favourite city break. I was blown away as I wasn't sure what to expect.

MrsE · 28/01/2022 08:48

Paris as well for me, just don't get it and I can speak French but even then it was a nightmare

Athens - never been so scared as I was here.

NYC - went in late 90's loved it, now it's dirty, over crowded and just not nice

In the UK Birmingham

StoatMilk · 28/01/2022 08:48

@TheSpottedZebra

Pisa. Boring shithole with a poorly-built building.
Grin
CaMePlaitPas · 28/01/2022 08:49

Lyon is a shit hole. Awful place.

CruelAndUnusualParenting · 28/01/2022 08:49

Venice.
I've loved everywhere else I've been in Italy, but in Venice I felt I was just another sheep lining up to be fleeced.
Verona was my personal favourite destination in Italy.

CatkinToadflax · 28/01/2022 08:50

Gibraltar. Utter dump.

CaMePlaitPas · 28/01/2022 08:50

Combe Martin in the west country, the place God forgot.

I'm on a roll here Grin

RhythmOfTheLight · 28/01/2022 08:50

Shanghai - babies piss and shit in the street wearing crotchless baby grows.

Beijing and Xian too. I liked Pingyao but only for the hot onion patties and the good massage I had.

It's all so grey.

3peassuit · 28/01/2022 08:53

Mexico City.

OssieShowman · 28/01/2022 08:54

Great Barrier Reef

theDudesmummy · 28/01/2022 08:54

Oh, and my abiding memory of Bali is the rats in the restaurants. Never again. Ditto various islands in Thailand with fat middle aged western men with little Thai teenage girls on their arms. The place was lovely to look at (apart from Bangkok, dirty and full of ill-treated dogs and mentally ill people), but the open exploitation of young women was disturbing.

Paris: I get the love, but it's not for me ( rather like I understand why people might hate London although I love it). Santorini was magical back in 1988. I wouldn't go there now...

LadyPropane · 28/01/2022 08:56

Sydney. London. Hamburg.

Honestly I think I'm just not a big city person and I should just accept this fact instead of trying to force it.

I know this isn't what you asked but Hong Kong was the total opposite for me. I'd heard so many negative things and I absolutely loved it. I wanted to move there after the first time I visited

theDudesmummy · 28/01/2022 08:56

I expected Gibraltar to be a dump and so it proved. Had a fun and hilarious weekend there as had no expectations.

SleepingStandingUp · 28/01/2022 08:56

Pisa.
Its a bit smaller than expected and compared to what else we'd seen, just a bit underwhelming
