For me, it was Paris. Not an AIBU, I know

OP posts:
Catflapkitkat · 28/01/2022 01:07

Vietnam for me. Thailand was better by miles.

User310 · 28/01/2022 01:09

The only place I have been very underwhelmed with is New York. It really wasn’t worth the trip. I’d have had a much better time spending 5 days in London.. even centre parks!

DaveGahansRealWife · 28/01/2022 01:10

Dublin - horrible, cheap nasty tourist shops
Mauritius - disappointing
South Africa - hated the security bars and walking through metal detectors in places

MintJulia · 28/01/2022 01:10

Paris, Niagara, and the Maldives.

skybluee · 28/01/2022 01:11

This thread is really depressing.

GETTINGLIKEMYMOTHER · 28/01/2022 01:12

@HoneyFlowers, we’ve had a Swedish friend for many years and have visited several times. Swedes can be very direct, as in saying exactly what they think, which can often come across as rude to Brits.

As a pp said, it’s a Scandi thing. A dd had a Norwegian friend who was the same.

CounsellorTroi · 28/01/2022 01:12

Sardinia. It’s lovely on the coast but threatening and poor inland. And Cagliari is a shithole.

CounsellorTroi · 28/01/2022 01:15

@Blueberrycreampie

Biarritz. It may have been glamorous once upon a time but those days are well and truly gone I'm afraid.
Same is true of Estoril in Portugal.
RosesAndHellebores · 28/01/2022 01:16

It also depends how happy you are at the time.

Melly1801 · 28/01/2022 01:20

@Cheeseandlobster

Costa Rica. It was beautiful. The people were amazing and the food fabulous. But my god it was so unbearably hot and humid. I was dripping with sweat constantly and I was so hot I couldn't eat. And I love food more than anyone I know. I also got a weird bug where I was shaking and had diarrhoea. It's the only place I have ever been on holiday where I lost weight. I wish I had loved it more as it was stunning and a once in a lifetime holiday.

And Egypt. I hated most things about that place and I never felt safe the entire time

Costa Rica is one of the best places on earth, you should go back when it’s less hot and hopefully you’ll love it.

(Not sure if anyone else has said this to you, there are a lot of pages to scroll through to check!)

PyongyangKipperbang · 28/01/2022 01:21

Not RTFT but love Paris.....however the most over rated place ever for me is the Mona Lisa room in the Louvre. As (then 6 YO) DD said "Is that it?!"

80sMum · 28/01/2022 01:21

St Lucia. Tiny cramped beaches that all belong to the hotels so you have to pay to sit there - and then you're continuously hassled by hustlers trying to sell you something, usually some sort of jewellery.
As soon as you step out of the car you're pounced on by people wanting to be a "guide" or to sell you something. It was very off-putting and was my first - and last! - visit to the Caribbean.

Featherstep · 28/01/2022 01:26

Bruges. We went on a grey day and didn't find it particularly pretty or charming or anything.

Marrakesh has some really wow architecture but as pp said, the relentless harassment really got to me and I wouldn't go back again.

Athens. Dusty, dirty, polluted, boiling hot and when we went the Acropolis was under scaffolding (I think it must be permanently under repair!)

Cotswolds. Found the landscape dull and unremarkable, the villages pretentious and the whole vibe artificial and commercialized. Bourton on the Water was horribly crowded and tacky. We did really enjoy some of the family friendly attractions dotted around though.

@skybluee

This thread is really depressing.
Sorry. My best places were Siena, Barbados, and a week staying in a Cornish vineyard where freakily the sun shone every day and we cycled and swam and ate cream teas. Smile
GiantHaystacks2021 · 28/01/2022 01:39

Munich
Milan
Jeju Island in S. Korea

SquirrelG · 28/01/2022 01:48

I giggling at Sydney having “no history”. Some tourists clearly don’t research their holidays.

I would say that applies to most of the posters on this thread! They either expect non-stop entertainment, or a replica of where they have just come from, with different scenery. Anyone who goes on holiday and is "bored" has no imagination.

MargaretHooper · 28/01/2022 01:50

Bali - although it was a gazillion years ago (1999). I chose Sanur, as I knew to avoid Kuta, but was totally shocked at young men, in broad daylight, trying to sell me sex. And you could die trying to cross the road.

Bondi Beach, - agree with a pp that it was dirty, and that Manly was far superior.

PrisonerofZeroCovid · 28/01/2022 01:56

Barbados - terrible service and a wildlife park full of copulating giant tortoises and nothing else. To be fair though, we didn't get great weather and I got a UTI, so that possibly clouded my judgement.

I liked Morocco but I went to Ouarzazate (amazing souk) and was in the middle of the desert for most of the 2 weeks so that might have helped.

Sharm El Sheik - only worth it if you like diving, which is pretty amazing. Agree that the hassle in town is wearing. We also went there shortly after the bombing so everywhere was on high alert.

Love big cities and don't mind the griminess, so London, NY, Paris, Hong Kong, even Mumbai get the thumbs up (took me a few trips to warm to Mumbai). Love Sydney and Singapore.

echt · 28/01/2022 01:57

@WeasilyPleased

The Grand Canyon. It's a big hole.
Well yes, it is. That is sort of the point.

I was unimpressed by the conventional view point as conveyed by photos, but went WOW!!!! when viewed from the other side.

We saw (with binoculars) mule trains picking down the canyon, which gave it scale, which is what is needed,

PrincessNutella · 28/01/2022 02:00

London. After New York it felt blah.

Doyourememberthetime · 28/01/2022 02:04

New York- smelled so bad like fast food and coffee with rubbish.

dipdye · 28/01/2022 02:37

Could easily live in Paris, absolutely loved it.

Flutterflybutterby · 28/01/2022 02:54

Most overrated - New York. Paris. Milan.

Most underrated - China is so different to how I expected. I travelled around a lot for a long time - many years. So clean, so safe, friendly, helpful people (people would notice was foreign and literally approach me in the street asking how I was, if I needed any help or directions, inviting me to meals in their home, etc!) absolutely gorgeous, breathtaking scenery, delicious food. Wonderful place.

lostmymarblesbutfoundthewine · 28/01/2022 02:54

Bath. Absolutely zero rush to go back

Lampzade · 28/01/2022 02:58

Los Angeles- shithole. Nothing like my childhood fantasy. Venice Beach is a dump.

Paris- dirty
Barcelona- dull with smelly drains
Athens - too much graffiti and stray dogs.

Las Vegas actually quite dull during the day and full of nefarious activity at night

However , I love New York
