To not want my toddler to wear shoes at nursery?

This really bothers me. She gets home at the end of the day and her little feet and socks are all clammy.

As a family we don't wear shoes in the house. At work, when I'm in the office (very small team, casual dress code) I always kick my shoes off under my desk.

I know plenty of people wear shoes all day long but small kids' feet are still soft and growing and don't need to be squished in shoes for most of the day (and she's at nursery full time). I've also seen that badly fitted shoes can hinder children's foot development and it's not really possible to know whether a 2 year old's shoes are perfectly fitting or not.

Is it just me or does this bother others too??

Nursery won't allow her to be in just socks, so I'm looking for options really of any alternative soft/breathable indoor footwear options I can take to nursery for her and leave there. I've had a quick look at those 'barefoot' type shoes but they are of course very expensive.

Slippers?

Konfetka · 27/01/2022 19:24

Sheepskin boots? They regulate temperature and wick moisture away from the skin

TonksInPurple · 27/01/2022 19:25

We had thin shoes like the inch blue ones if they still exist but cheaper!!

LittleMrsMama · 27/01/2022 19:26

YANBU, to prefer your child to be barefoot/in socks at nursery. I prefer mine to be barefoot too (allowed at her nursery) as she seems more comfy bending down and sitting on the floor.

YANBU finding ways to help reduce sweaty feet while also sticking to the rules

YABU if you were complaining and being really difficult to the nursery

dementedpixie · 27/01/2022 19:28

Ours used to have indoor shoes or slippers for nursery

DysmalRadius · 27/01/2022 19:28

This kind of thing?www.<a class="break-all" href="https://amazon.co.uk/Toddlers-Moccasins-Anti-Slip-Slipper-Breathable/dp/B08C56LJZW/ref=mp_s_a_1_20?hvlocphy=9050372&hvnetw=g&keywords=slipper%20socks%20with%20rubber%20soles&hvadid=498413374701&qid=1643311612&gclid=Cj0KCQiAosmPBhCPARIsAHOen-PdTmge-o9yrEFFebFJyCjBVK1nenlzbMWucuS5Yp8OzcziHyvPZn4aAsAeEALw_wcB&hydadcr=24953_1816938&hvdev=m&hvqmt=e&hvtargid=kwd-339646308143&adgrpid=117764634477&hvrand=14225415146700731585&sr=8-20&tag=mumsnet&ascsubtag=mnforum-am-i-being-unreasonable-4465213-to-not-want-my-toddler-to-wear-shoes-at-nursery" rel="nofollow" target="_blank">amazon.co.uk/Toddlers-Moccasins-Anti-Slip-Slipper-Breathable/dp/B08C56LJZW/ref=mp_s_a_1_20?adgrpid=117764634477&gclid=Cj0KCQiAosmPBhCPARIsAHOen-PdTmge-o9yrEFFebFJyCjBVK1nenlzbMWucuS5Yp8OzcziHyvPZn4aAsAeEALw_wcB&hvadid=498413374701&hvdev=m&hvlocphy=9050372&hvnetw=g&hvqmt=e&hvrand=14225415146700731585&hvtargid=kwd-339646308143&hydadcr=24953_1816938&keywords=slipper+socks+with+rubber+soles&qid=1643311612&sr=8-20

Slippers

TheYearOfSmallThings · 27/01/2022 19:29

The thing is, she's not sitting at a desk. She's running around a crowded space with lots of other people stomping about, Lego bricks and other hazards, possibly free access to the outdoors...

Maybe some fisherman's sandals or something would prevent the clamminess?

mynameiscalypso · 27/01/2022 19:30

Ours aren't allowed to wear outdoor shoes - I thought that was normal! My DS has basic slippers but some others wear crocs.

KnobJockey · 27/01/2022 19:33

Asda first walker shoes- the canvas plimsolls are the most flexible value shoes we could find. Some of the trainers are good too, but need feeling to check.
They only currently have this design online, but generally get them in regularly and have others in store.

My son never wore shoes at nursery. Slippers or socks. This is weird for a nursery imo

Baystard · 27/01/2022 19:38

Polarn o pyret do stretchy ankle length moccasins that are ideal. They tick the box for 'shoe' without being heavy or formed. www.polarnopyret.co.uk/products/pop-stripe-moccasins-grey-60390451-186

Mine also didn’t wear shoes in the nursery, and we had to take ours off going inside. I wonder though if nursery has free flow out and indoors, maybe it would be better to keep shoes on otherwise they’d be constantly on and off. Ours didn’t because the preschool room was at the top of a three storey building, so they all went out at once, but I know other settings the children can choose to be in or out at any time.
shouldistop · 27/01/2022 19:43

Our nursery asks for slippers to keep there

SuPerDoPer · 27/01/2022 19:43

Our nursery didn't allow barefoot or crocs. Decent sandals with adjustable straps and more sturdy slipper type things were OK if the weather was appropriate. Shoes needed as they were always outside on the climbing equipment and in the garden and too much of a faff to take on and off all day when coming in for meals and naps. They even slept in them! It felt a bit alien to me, I hate the feeling of shoes and prefer to be barefoot whenever possible but DC didn't seem to mind and both older now with no foot issues. I think good fitting slightly flexible leather shoes were the way forward.

liveforsummer · 27/01/2022 19:46

You could get her plimsoles or cruisers. Yes you can ensure a baby's shoes for well at all times, that's important. Nurseries tend to have risky play options and lots of outdoor time. In ours we have glass and china crockery and kitchen toys, use nails and screws etc. It's not suitable to walk around indoors without shoes let alone out.

scaredsadandstuck · 27/01/2022 19:46

Surely croc type shoes are the answer? Robust enough to protect her feet but not restricting? Also not a problem if she goes outside in them (other than maybe getting a bit cold/wet I suppose).

DoubleGauze · 27/01/2022 19:47

I second those asda first walker shoes. I put my youngest in those for nursery , they're really soft and flexible but protect their feet from stepping on anything hard too.

OfstedOffred · 27/01/2022 19:49

Those sock on things - like a sock with a thin flexible sole

OfstedOffred · 27/01/2022 19:50

Step ons sorry, they are called step ons

Boopeedoop · 27/01/2022 19:51

Ours wore slippers or plimsolls.

CustardGoodJamGoodMeatGood · 27/01/2022 19:51

YANBU, DD (2yo) just has thick socks or slippers for nursery, they're not allowed outdoor shoes inside. Even the staff wear slippers indoors.

Hugasauras · 27/01/2022 19:52

DD has slippers, can't she wear those? Does it need to be proper shoes or did they say 'indoor shoes'?

firstimemamma · 27/01/2022 19:54

Ds' nursery insist on specific shoes just to be worn at nursery - or 'indoor shoes' as they call them. He wears plimsolls. I've worked in nurseries and wouldn't be happy with ds barefoot at nursery as he'd probably injure his feet a lot.

HighlandPony · 27/01/2022 19:55

In our nursery they’re not really allowed ‘outdoor’ shoes. They’ve got to wear gym shoes or trainers or plimsole things or something similar and leave wellies for outdoor area. Try something like that maybe?
