To train my hair?

StrongCoffeAvalanche · 26/01/2022 14:29

So I've always washed my hair every day since I was about 10. If I don't it gets super oily and greasy and I just feel disgusting all day long.

So I'm trying to train my hair and only was it every 3 days.

However now I'm reading loads of info that says fine hair does get oilier quicker and it's bad not to wash your hair if it's dirty, and that hair training is just a made up myth.

But other research says everyday washing is really drying and bad for your hair.

Feeling confused.

AIBU to attempt to train my hair? I've been doing it for a few months and it still gets as greasy as ever on non wash days. Dry shampoo helps but not by much. Should I just give in and wash daily?

I have greasy hair that has to be washed every day. I tried training it but it didn't work for me and I really take issue with people who insist it works for everyone. My hair wasn't fit to be seen by anyone.

I wash my face and body everyday - why wouldn't I wash my hair?

HippeePrincess · 26/01/2022 15:05

I used to wash it every day as a teenager then every other day. I have trained it to some degree to washing twice a week, if I mess up and wash it earlier it does ruin the schedule and goes greasy quicker again.

On the last day (day 4) my hair can only be worn tied back and I do put a small amount of dry shampoo in the front on that day otherwise it does look manky. But this is what it used to be like on day 2 before I stopped washing it so often.

How I did it:

Stretched to washing every 1.5 days for a few weeks, then 2 then 2.5 etc.
Brush the oils through and down the hair thoroughly before washing.
Shampoo only the roots.
Condition only the ends.
I also now use shampoo bars rather than liquid shampoo.

OfstedOffred · 26/01/2022 15:06

What type of shampoo & conditioner are you using?

Conditioners containing silicates like dimethicone leave a build up on your hair that prevents it absorbing your natural oils. Then you end up having to use sulphate shampoos (sodium laureth sulphate etc) to strip the oily build up, which can contribute to your body then over producing more oil.

You can reduce the cycle but you need to use silicate free conditioners and sulphate free shampoos - which are now widely available.

Gradually increase the time between washes from 1-2 days, then 2-3 etc.

StrongCoffeAvalanche · 26/01/2022 15:23

Thanks all. I now use Olaplex shampoo and conditioner

OfstedOffred · 26/01/2022 15:29

It looks like its silicon/sulphate free which is good.

Do you have very fine, thin hair?

Tal45 · 26/01/2022 15:30

I only wash my hair twice a week. I use Green People shampoo, it's silicone and SLS free. I tried a few other ones but some make my hair really greasy, even sticky in some cases - once even my mum commented on how greasy it looked! It's not cheap shampoo (why i've tried others) but I've wasted so much money trying other things that it's cheaper to go back to Green People and stick with that!

thisplaceisweird · 26/01/2022 15:31

I have fine hair and during lockdowns etc I got washing down to just once a week, or once every 5 days depending what I have on.

It's definitely do-able but you need very high-quality shampoo that is suited to your hair type. Olaplex is indeed a great brand and has good ingredients, but it is VERY heavy. Try something like Ouai Fine Hair range or Brigeo Blossom and Bloom.

OfstedOffred · 26/01/2022 15:31

Also do you use products? Any products like mousses, sprays etc are going to clog it up.

TheFishWillSeeYouNow · 26/01/2022 15:32

I've gone from a daily hair washer to an every other day washer thanks to Aussie volume shampoo. Great for fine greasy hair. Condition only the tips.

thisplaceisweird · 26/01/2022 15:32

Also clean your hairbrushes frequently, and only apply conditioner to the very ends, shouldn't be anywhere near your scalp.

StrongCoffeAvalanche · 26/01/2022 15:36

Thanks all great advice.

I have very thin, fine hair but apparently LOTS of it (ever hairdresser I've ever had comments on it, that I have deceptively loads more hair than expected).

I do make a mental note to condition only the ends but forget and end up doing the whole lot. Must remember!

I use a leave in conditioner on the mids/ends and hair oil on the ends.

I think you're right, maybe the products are too heavy for me. But they cost an absolute fortune so if I do switch I'd probably still use olaplex at least ever other wash to use it up

OfstedOffred · 26/01/2022 15:37

The hair oil probably contains dimethicone or something like it.

StrongCoffeAvalanche · 26/01/2022 15:37

It's olaplex hair oil also

OfstedOffred · 26/01/2022 15:38

If its olaplex no 7 hair oil the first listed ingredient is dimethicone so you want to ditch that.

StrongCoffeAvalanche · 26/01/2022 15:39

Ah I see, thank you good to know

I also have fine hair. Before lockdown I would wash everyday. Now at most every other but you can tell it needs washing... thankfully it's Woolly hat weather... but I've been washing every other day for over a year and it hasn't reduced the lack of greasiness!

See shampoo bars better?

I trained my hair during lockdowns...honestly went from every 2 days to 1 whole week and still looking fine. But i have very thick hair, so maybe it's easier.

Bavarois · 26/01/2022 15:50

I'm not convinced by 'hair training', I used to have to wash my hair daily but when I went from natural brunette to blonde I could go 2-3 days immediately. I assume the bleach makes it drier. When my roots come through I need to wash it daily or every other + dry shampoo at least.

How about washing every other day? My hair is fine but I also have a lot of it. I wash it every other day and find that by day two it is a bit gross by the end of the day but not so bad that I couldn't be seen with it. I agree that you're probably using too many products. I use a good, light shampoo (Aveda or similar), don't condition but I use a small pea sized amount of Aveda leave in treatment.
An awful lot of shampoos leave my hair very greasy straight after washing and I can totally resonate with the 'sticky' comment.

5128gap · 26/01/2022 15:57

I've trained mine. I used to wash every day, now only weekly and can go ten days. However, I've also changed my diet to whole foods, with no meat fish or diary, and don't sweat anymore, so this probably has more to do with it than the training.

thisplaceisweird · 26/01/2022 15:59

To me it sounds like you are using a lot of products, particularly heavy products.

I would never ever put conditioner all over my hair, no wonder you have a greasy scalp! I bet you'll notice such a huge difference by just stopping doing this.

Garysmum · 26/01/2022 15:59

Super fine hair here. Used to wash every day - now every 4 days. Again shampoo only routes and a good silicone free liquid conditioner on the ends
