To train my hair?

So I've always washed my hair every day since I was about 10. If I don't it gets super oily and greasy and I just feel disgusting all day long.

So I'm trying to train my hair and only was it every 3 days.

However now I'm reading loads of info that says fine hair does get oilier quicker and it's bad not to wash your hair if it's dirty, and that hair training is just a made up myth.

But other research says everyday washing is really drying and bad for your hair.

Feeling confused.

AIBU to attempt to train my hair? I've been doing it for a few months and it still gets as greasy as ever on non wash days. Dry shampoo helps but not by much. Should I just give in and wash daily?

If I wash everyday I can start getting a really dry flakey scalp so I do try to endure 2 days.

yes it works to let it go longer in between washes. you can use dry shampoo on off days (brushing through a little cornflour works just as well and is cheaper / better for environment). I also do co-washing some days (conditioner only) as a kind of in-between wash. This removes some but not too much oil.

I also think the oils and conditioner and leave in conditioner is too much at once.

Brushing root to tip to distribute grease before washing

My hair is very thick, so tends not to show the grease as quickly as fine hair does. I wash it about once every 3 weeks or so, but I've never washed it more regularly than once a week anyway as if I do it looks like a dandelion clock of split ends and kinks

I tried this after my hairdresser told me it was bad to wash it daily. I went two days and felt thoroughly disgusting. I can't even make it look nice. It just looks flat and greasy.

One handy tip if you want to wash less frequently is to apply dry shampoo to the roots only in the evenings. That gives it a good long time to absorb any grease before morning. I normally do this in the 3rd and 4th days after washing and it actually looks better then than when freshly washed. Still shiny but with a lot more volume and body. I can easily go a week without washing it this way (very fine, soft hair but a lot of it). My personal record is 13 days but that was with the help of a great salon blow dry.

I used to wash every day, but working from home reduced the need to look so tidy and now it's every other day if I use shampoo/conditioner but I can get to 3 or perhaps 4 if I use "no waste path" shampoo/conditioner bar. So far only use the bar after swimming but will be switching at home once I used up what I have.
Bar feels expensive but after 15 or so uses it still looks the same size as new so will last well I think.

Ok it's taken me 40 years to discover but clarifying shampoo is just amazing- it's transformed my hair from dry/greasy to shiny and soft. Use every third wash and I wash my hair every day. You can get it from boots only £6

I also find the Pantene lift’n’volume silicone-free shampoo to be good for making hair less heavy/film-y.

I could never train my hair. I thought I'd cracked during pregnancy but it was the hormones. I also sweat at night and I feel dirty if I don't wash it so I've just gone back to once a day and enjoy my lovely clean hair!

FreedomFaith · 27/01/2022 11:03

You're adding oil to oily hair? And conditioning your scalp too? That's two mistakes already.

I've found washing my hair with shampoo twice and conditioning the ends helps it to last a couple of days without needing to wash it every day but it did take lock down to sort that out.

If it helps though, people with oily skin tend to age slower than other people. My mum and I both have oily skin and get oily greasy hair easier, neither of us look our age. So there is one positive too it, sadly it is the only one. Grin

I have really fine hair and I found olaplex was too heavy for me.
Following this thread because although I probably should wash my hair every day from an aesthetic point of view, I usually leave it 3 days and it's always greasy - but I do a cute slick back bun Wink

I’ve tried training my hair a few times over the years but it needs washing daily.
