The baby saline drops. You can get them in pharmacies and supermarkets. Sitting in a warm (not hot) room with some steam (I used to get in the bath and hold my child on my chest.

Thank you so much

Agree with steamy rooms, it really helps. Keeping them upright against you as much as possible. It is horrid watching a newborn with a cold but if you have any worries call the docs/111 they really don't mind seeing healthy newborns with a cold.

SmellyOldOwls · 26/01/2022 09:55

It is scary when your newborn gets a cold but don't panic. It'll be ok Smile lots of new babies get colds especially in winter. Ring the GP if you think baby needs to be seen or if they get a temperature.

BobHadBitchTits · 26/01/2022 09:57

Don't panic.

Skin on skin if your baby is unsettled.

Ring 111 if you're struggling or worried.

Queenie6655 · 26/01/2022 10:02

Thanks so so much guys

She seems a bit more settled now

So I need to get further help if her temp spikes and if she goes off her bottle?

Snufflebabe do great products that can be used from birth for a baby with a cold. Nasal aspirator can also be handy when baby gets to the snotty stage!

Keep them upright when you can as that can help with being blocked up - laying on your chest can be good for that. Keep an eye on temp (NHS says anything above 38 should be seen by GP in an under 3 month old).

I took my (then) 7 week old to the GP late last year for her first cold. She had a very mild temp (38.2) and all the symptoms you’re describing. GP gave her a thorough check over and advised it likely was just a cold but it was the right thing to get her checked, and laughed when I apologised for bringing her in for a cold and said she’d much rather I brought her in now with just a cold than waited to see if it got worse before she got seen, so they really don’t mind!

Please be careful and monitor her breathing. My 11 day old was drawing in breath and breathing rapidly. She went to A&E where she was rushed to resuscitation. She was in the high dependency unit on oxygen for 24 hours. Luckily came home a few days later. Likely your babe will be fine if feeding fine but do watch her breathing.

Have to say I am worried about her breathing now

Goes from fine to rapid for a few seconds then fine again

Then please make a GP appointment now. They will prioritise such a young baby. Then you can have peace of mind.

Notdoingthis · 26/01/2022 10:41

I think erratic breathing in newborns is normal so don't panic. But worth checking.

If you’re worried about her breathing 100% call the doctors just to get her seen - even if it’s totally fine you’re going to be anxious over it so it’ll help for the doctor to have a look. Newborn breathing can be weird to watch anyway but a doctor will know if it’s in the realms of newborn normal or something else. Flowers

(My boys are massive 17/19 year olds now) but when they were newborns (all 3 had colds) I had some kind of snot sucker thing that you put up their nose and it sucks the snot out. It was brilliant.

This is it!

Also i put a book or 2 under the head end of their moses baskets so they slept at a slight angle which helped. You have to watch its not steep enough so they slide towards the end in a heap though.

Also This vapour oil on a hanky near but out of reach of the baby is great too.

Bigoakbeam · 26/01/2022 11:34

I should add that once in desperation when i couldn't find the snotsucker gadget i actually put my mouth over DS2s tiny nose and gently sucked the snot into my own mouth and spat it out. Did the trick and its weird with your own babies, it wasn't icky at all!

Queenie6655 · 26/01/2022 11:38

Excellent

Thanks so so much

My youngest has rsv and bronchiolitis and ended up in hospital for 8 days with a day at home after 4. He was on oxygen and was tube fed

Big red flags were sucking his stomach in, stopped feeding, throwing up anything he did feed. Finally, he was admitted when he couldn't cry any more and went floppy, literally like a rag doll. I'd been taking him to the GPs 3x day for monitoring in the leadup, on the day he was admitted I rang gp and said it was time and he referred us straight to hospital when we turned up.

Tbh one of the GPs had been making me feel like a neurotic mum when I first started taking him but as he was my third the others trusted I was worried and kept having him back for checks. It took 5 mins of their time, so I would absolutely go if you are worried.

Twizbe · 26/01/2022 11:48

My youngest was basically born with a cold as I had one when I delivered.

Snufflebaby in hot water in the room, I breastfed so that helped too, lots of cuddles as well.

She was fine in a few days

Wow

How scary

Awful when they are so tiny

Thank you for this I will be keeping a very close eye

I realised this sounds scary and I honestly didn't meant to scare you. He is 13 now and (nearly) taller than me, the GPs still recognize him add the baby who was really sick.

Point is there is a lot they can do to help, they wouldn't begrudge checking out one so small and equally when you're gut says something is seriously wrong trust it. It's hard when they're so small at it can be less obvious, they are not yet in a routine for you to notice they're eating/drinking/wearing less often.

Best of luck

My son & my daughter both had colds at a week old, both winter babies.
Saline drops, I recommend sterimar nasal spray. It's the best I've found & I've tried a lot for babies! Some sort of suction device, so snuffle babe do one, or frida baby.
Sit in the bathroom with a hot shower running for 10 mins.
Keep baby upright as much as possible & elevate their cot if possible.
Try not to worry, I know it's concerning when a newborn or baby has a cold or cough etc, but most often than not, it will just be a mild cold.
My daughter was sick a lot when she has a cold & I think that's because of the mucus, so feed little & often if this happens.
Keep an eye on their temp & breathing.
Check the area around their ribs & if it looks like the skin is sucking in, this is a sign they are struggling to breathe, so contact 111 or urgent care etc
