To think parents idling their cars outside nursery are selfish?

Every time I pick my 2 year old up from nursery at midday, there are several parents all sitting outside idling their cars for 10 minutes before they pick their child up.

I think this is incredibly selfish and is not good for the environment, the health of the kids or the adults working inside.

I am thinking of mentioning it to the nursery because they are parked in their private car park. IABU?

That sign is good, thanks laiste.

I sort of want to tell the school , but I mainly want to see the parents who refused turn their engines off when I asked them nicely to be fined first. My vindictive side is too strong.

Thebestwaytoscareatory · 26/01/2022 13:06

Sometimes I have to give the car a burst of heat as my kid can't breathe if it's too cold.

How does your kid make it from the school to the car in winter then? Hold their breath and run?

YABU. Nothing will happen to anyone from a few car fumes. The issues are massively overstated in order to be able to apply more green taxes.

It always amazes me how some people can so confidently make a comment on something they clearly have no understanding of. It's even more bizarre when the subject in question literally has mountains of evidence that disproves said comment.

DockOTheBay · 26/01/2022 13:07

@Triphazards

Triphazards I'd do it if I was cold.

"Why not just turn up on time?"

Then I wouldn't be cold, so it's not relevant to the situation.

Thats exactly my point. Turn up on time, then you won't be cold and no need to labe the engine on...
RandomUsernameHere · 26/01/2022 13:10

YANBU. Definitely worth mentioning it. My DCs' old school sent out a reminder about this after a child had an asthma attack because of it. Not that it should have come to that!

PinkSyCo · 26/01/2022 13:18

Your scolding does not have any effect on what I do, nor even on my general demeanour.

That is often the way with thick people. Too thick to put a coat and gloves on, too thick to think about anyone but themselves and too thick to care that everyone else thinks you’re a selfish ignoramus.

sasparilla1 · 26/01/2022 13:31

@Laiste

We have the entitled twat's car fumes AND parking ON the fucking pavements here.

Community PC not interested and neither is the school :(

We get this too.

Our carpark is permit holders only, but when that gets full with non-permit holders on the school run they then park on the pavement with double yellow lines. Hmm

We're moving soon, I've had enough of it!

But I expect you enjoy hammering it out on the keyboard!

To be fair, @Triphazards's attitude is very common, but there are plenty of other people who genuinely aren't aware of the harm done and who do care, and making them aware and persuading them is a worthwhile reason for threads like these.

Itsnotover · 26/01/2022 13:46

I emailed nursery about it and they have sent an email back to say that they agree with me and are going to ask all parents to stop doing it.

There is no excuse for it at any time, but particularly not in this case because it is a nursery which has plenty of spaces. Therefore you don’t even need to arrive early and wait. It’s just moronic.

This is true. There will always be selfish a-holes who will send their children to school with a sickness bug because they only care about themselves. Some people genuinely don’t know about the dangers.

toppkatz · 26/01/2022 14:03

It's not just selfish and bad for the environment, it is illegal.

crazyjinglist · 26/01/2022 14:22

They might need to keep he heating on

No, they don't NEED to. They WANT to, but unfortunately a lot of people can't differentiate between the two.

^This. Some people are so selfish and also unbelievably pathetic about being a bit chilly for 10 minutes (in their car which is presumably still at least a bit warm from having the heating on while they were driving there)! Some parents manage to cope with walking to pick their dc up and waiting in the playground - in the actual outside Shock.

Volhhg · 26/01/2022 14:34

YANBU. Schools are always emailing about this and people have started turning them off but it's as if people forget and the school have to send letters every few months to remind people. The more people who complain to the nursery the more likely they are to take action.

sst1234 · 26/01/2022 14:48

@musicalfrog

Idling anywhere is selfish. If you're going to be waiting in the car somewhere cold take a hot flask or hot water bottle.
Really? Do you prepare a picnic everytime you go out.

They want to. And that’s fine. Your calling people names should not mean they cannot do what they want.

Way to go when you want to convince people to do something. Froth at the mouth and call people names. Clever.
Goldi321 · 26/01/2022 15:06

We like in the UK not the Arctic Circle! Put a coat on and stop making babies and toddlers walk through your pollution. When did we turn into such a selfish society that the only thing that matters is me, me, me?

Itsnotover · 26/01/2022 15:07

@sst1234 it's not 'fine' it's illegal.

PinkSyCo · 26/01/2022 15:08

I’m hardly frothing and I’m not trying to convince any long in the tooth drivers to do anything. No point. You can’t fix stupid.

Itsnotover · 26/01/2022 15:11

@sst1234 I want to block you in with my car so that you can't get out of your drive. I need to because there's nowhere else to park. Why can't I do what I want? Me, me, me, me, me.

WTF is wrong with people these days? The world doesn't revolve around you and your sheer entitlement.

Legoninjago1 · 26/01/2022 15:19

Yanbu. People at my younger child's school do it right next to where the kids are playing sport. Really pisses me off too.

MabelsApron · 26/01/2022 15:28

I don't even own a car so in winter if I have to wait then I have to, gasp, wait outside! In the cold! God only knows how I'm still alive. Maybe they should study me.

mogsrus · 26/01/2022 15:33

Illegal to have engine running whilst parked. Highway Code, but who reads it?

nettytree · 26/01/2022 16:25

We have one bloke who always leaves his engine running when waiting for his child. He also has the radio blasting. But the thing that really annoys me, once he sees his precious teenager he has to pull out his spot and block the exit so they don't have to walk the extra 10 metres.

BellatricksStrange · 26/01/2022 16:27
@Shuffletime, I was just about to post about Ella Kissi-Debrah! Her mother was impressive in her attempts to raise awareness.
I know about her and it's a load of crock. She died from asthma, but the inquest gave into pressure and added exacerbation from pollution.

What exactly are they saying, that she would have fared marginally better in the Swiss Alps? Maybe, but that's neither here nor there. She lived in a city, with all the benefits and negatives thereof.

Same with the so-called studies about how pollution causes X amount of premature deaths. They aren't based on any proper science, and crucially, they never define their terms. Like what does premature mean? Dying at 93 instead of 94, is well worth for the benefit of modern-day living in cities.

Car pollution is just the villain du jour, with all the environmentalists jumping on the band wagon. We won't live forever. Will a few bloody car fumes make a huge difference? No. Certainly not so much so to make the cost of banning cars, or even waiting in a freezing car because you can't idle, worth it.

greenerpastures2022 · 26/01/2022 18:17

I used to get to nursery/school pick ups early and wait outside everyday. Always turned engine off and did emails on my phone. Why would people leave engines running for such a length of time - never seen that before.
