To not want stuff we post here to end up on gutter press websites?

Lilolily · 25/01/2022 12:32

Every day I’m reading stuff on the mirror or sun websites that’s been lifted from mumsnet. Why do they feel it’s acceptable to take and publish stuff from a help forum for cheap clicks and views?!

Vile.

OP posts:
Lougle · 25/01/2022 12:34

It's not a help forum and it's public. Nothing you say here is private. Not even on OTBT. The only way to keep it private is not to write it.

OperationRinka · 25/01/2022 12:34

YANBU

I don't want my DC to get snotty when they have a cold. I don't want my cats' litter tray to smell bad. I don't want January to be so sodding cold.

StrychnineInTheSandwiches · 25/01/2022 12:35

Mumsnet probably like it as it routes more traffic through the site.

It happens, and you can always spot a thread that has tabloid appeal, just make sure not to put anything too personal on them.

PrimroseBed · 25/01/2022 12:36

'Don't put anything on MN you wouldn't want on the front page of the Sun' is quite a good rule to live by.

IncompleteSenten · 25/01/2022 12:37

Indeed it is.

QueenieMum · 25/01/2022 12:41

Primrose & Lougle have it, it's the internet which isn't private.

There's quite a broad base of lifestyles & opinions on here so makes it easier for publications to rummage on here than try & do their own opinion research.

It's lazy journalism to fill space but can also be seen as a reflection of what the 'person in the street' is thinking at any given time.

Sparklingbrook · 25/01/2022 12:42

YABU. Post it on here and it's out there. MN have their own social media which they might post it on.
It's not some quiet corner of the internet. Don't want it shared? Don't post it.

overthehillandsofaraway · 25/01/2022 12:43

Rather than focusing on stuff from MN not ending up in the gutter press, I'd rather campaign for the gutter press to print actual news stories.

Random person posting random shit on MN does not equal news.

It's not lazy journalism. It's just not even journalism.

daimbarsatemydogsbone · 25/01/2022 12:44

YABU and unrealistic - you need to post somewhere secret if that's what you want OP. MN is happy for the gutter press to get stories from here.

Sparklingbrook · 25/01/2022 12:45

Penis Beaker went viral, it was picked up by all the papers. It brought loads more users to the site. It's a win for MN if a thread gets picked up.

and that would start with people not buying shit papers or clicking on their websites.
RunningInTheWind · 25/01/2022 12:47

Given your sneers towards the “gutter press”, why are you spending so much time on the sun/mirror sites that you find all these articles?

TheMullerLightOwl · 25/01/2022 12:48

Sorry OP but the Mumsnet Ts&C's effectively state that by posting on Mumsnet you give them a licence to do what they like with it (obviously paraphrasing).

lottiegarbanzo · 25/01/2022 12:50

MN is a business. It's aim is to make money. Your posts, your attention and data about you are the content it sells, to advertisers. It's not going to object to 'news' papers driving traffic to the site.

They do have actual news stories. But they have things for entertainment as well. It's nothing new - they've always had crosswords, brain teasers and strip cartoons. Linking to a Mumsnet thread is part of the entertainment content, whether it's "here's an interesting discussion" or "look at this ridiculous nonsense". Not everything than a newspaper publishes is actual news.
GinThing1 · 25/01/2022 12:53

It’s a public forum and unfortunately they are within their rights legally to take material for articles etc.

Obviously it doesn’t make it right, but Mumsnet does make it clear on their website.

And let’s be honest....Mumsnet won’t change that, it’s free advertising!

gamerchick · 25/01/2022 12:53

We're not the customers, we are the product OP. If you don't want something lifted then don't post it.

MrFsAunt · 25/01/2022 12:53

So much has been lifted from MN, The Wright Stuff was notorious for lifting content from AIBU, This Morning even got Vanessa Feltz to present a section titled Am I Being Unreasonable?.

Everyone's at it so I don't think MNHQ minds somehow.

As PPs have said it's worth bearing it it mind when you post.

AsYouWishButtercup · 25/01/2022 12:55

It’s not ‘vile’ it’s how news works these days. They’re not obliged to only stick to press releases and court reports.

Golden rule: if you don’t want to be outed don’t post so many details

MrFsAunt · 25/01/2022 12:56

Or change some details .

DontBlameMe79 · 25/01/2022 12:58

I think many of the posts here are DESIGNED to be picked up.

PattyPan · 25/01/2022 12:58

Yabu - isn’t this the basic premise of what we teach children about internet safety? Once you post something on the internet it’s out there forever for anyone to see?

And yes it’s bad journalism but does anyone really expect anything better of the tabloids?

Sparklingbrook · 25/01/2022 13:03

You can get your thread on here deleted for being too identifying but it's still out there somewhere and if the papers have picked it up then it's too late.

Lonelycrab · 25/01/2022 13:06

Yanbu. As has been said it’s lazy journalism, and it’s hardly news.

“Some people somewhere on the Internet disagree about something”Shock

Sparklingbrook · 25/01/2022 13:09

I don't even think it's lazy journalism. It's not even journalism. But let's face it, it's not going to be the run of the mill threads that get lifted. There's generally something a bit sensational and Hmm about the ones that are.
