Desk taken at work while on maternity

I'm coming to the end of my maternity leave and have found out that a man in my team has moved into my desk while I've been off and replaced it with a standing desk. I love my desk, it has a window and privacy which I need more than him in the role I'm in, and I can see my daughter's nursery.
He's on more money than me, and didn't even ask to have my desk, which still has a locked cupboard of mine next to it which I need.
The desk I've been moved to is pretty shit.
AIBU to demand my desk back?

YANBU! Similar happened to me during maternity leave, I had a closed room, my ergonomic chair (2 hernias) was taken my rolodex (we had those!) disappeared, my portfolio reshuffled. I was sacked after 13 painful months where they did everything to make my life miserable. OP, look for another job if you find you have no support from management.

SoupDragon

Demands rarely go down well.

**Neither does not bothering to read the OP's updates 🤦🏻‍♀️

Fair point. My bad Blush

Just have an open and honest communication. Are you doing super sensitive work that clearly mustn’t be overseen ? Forget the nursery arguement- not professional. It’s damn annoying when things change from a comfort zone but hardly a point for an office battle . You’re getting paid for the work you do and l doubt any employer wants to deal with this level of hassle. You can only ask …good luck .

You can only ask

😂🤣🤣

Sorry you lost desk whilst you were away. Can you pop a privacy screen so he can’t see what you are working on. We don’t have allocated desks. Legal and HR do most of the confidential work but we have pods and meeting rooms to carry out private discussions etc.

Like the others said before you go on guns blazing, he might have a medical reason for the standing desk. And if you are the office manager or the closest thing to it - it could appear like bullying too ask him to move because it’s your preference to sit by the window and gaze at the nursery.
I didn’t like hot dealing at first but got the hang of it now and so will you

CMZ2018 · 27/01/2022 09:56

Just sit at a desk and get on with your job, talk about ridiculous

Theluggage15 · 27/01/2022 10:00

I understand the issue is sorted now but I don’t get why you keep on going on about private desks. There are screens which can shield your monitor vertically and horizontally. Far simpler than faffing about with desks.

Helloevans3 · 27/01/2022 11:23

As frustrating as it may be you have little say in where your desk is situated. Once worked in a windowless office. Not good.
You could maybe argue that the light from the window is good for your well-being and as he isn’t in very much might be better to be there instead of him. However if there isn’t much difference then there is no reason to oust him.
Surely most of the time your child in inside the nursery why is it important to see it? Being able to see the nursery is not a reason to get your old
Position back.

The poster who criticised this man purely for the having the audacity for being a man with a desk look ridiculous now. They assumed he was commandeering the desk but actually he used it temporarily and was “fine” about giving it up. Grin
