To ask you to recommend school uniform

DD5 is in age 7-8 uniform and prefers a pinafore with tights. So far I've used Asda and Sainsburys but every pinafore is losing it's grey, so looks old and worn after a few months and all of the grey tights are bobbley and shapeless.
Is the uniform supposed to be replaced every few months? That seems awful to me, both financially and environmentally. Are any of the other shops any better?
Sorry for a boring thread 😴

How many wears before you wash the pinafore?
I quite liked Adams back when DD was 7yo (long gone).

mummyh2016 · 24/01/2022 19:11

Try M&S, DD is in uniform from last year and still looks as good as new.

SarahBellam · 24/01/2022 19:13

Can’t fault M&S. Their uniforms lasted until my kids grew out of them.

HPandTheNeverEndingBedtime · 24/01/2022 19:16

M&s wears brilliantly, I always bought the easy dressing range if it was available as although DD doesn't have additional needs it was much easier for her to get dressed after PE.

RussianSpy101 · 24/01/2022 19:17

I buy M&S and had no problems.

Aroundtheworldin80moves · 24/01/2022 19:17

I was going to say Sainsburys as DD1 has passed on uniform to DD2 after wearing it a year, and then its been passed on further as it still looks like new (skirts anyway, the Teflon material not jersey. Shirts are usually stained, and the brighter colour stuff loses its brightness whatever the brand)

Tights do wear out though.

CandyMan89 · 24/01/2022 19:40

M&S. Theyre amazing! I've re used the 4-5 years with youngest. Still in good condition/colour!

I dont know about the exact items you speak of as I have a boy but I find M&S stuff the best, its not too expensive but lasts well.
Ericaequites · 24/01/2022 19:47

Wash tights inside out and line dry or on a rack so they will last longer. Cotton rich tights pill less than orlon or other synthetics. Tights need to be washed after every wear. My feet sweat a lot, and kids can be very mean about smelly feet.

Siameasy · 24/01/2022 19:48

Agree with M and S and I don’t necessarily wash the pinafores etc daily. Freshen with febreze or spot clean

Professionallytorn · 24/01/2022 20:20

Another vote for Sainsbury's, hard wearing and washes well

Vispa · 24/01/2022 20:34

Our DDs uniform from Next has outlasted anything from the supermarket by a mile, the colours are still bright and fabrics non bobbly. Tights keep their shape etc. Have been getting most of hers from there for the last few years now as it was so much better.

MamaBearThius · 24/01/2022 21:27

Ah thanks all! I'll try next and m&s...and will wash tights inside out. Tights get worn a day and put for the wash, pinafores I try and eek 2 days out of...yogurt depending!

M&S is good. DD's primary uniform survived her and went to friends looking good as new.

DS is very hard on his clothes and the M&S shorts have never yet torn or bobbled, which is a miracle given he arrives home most days caked in mud and twigs from head to toe. They get washed and tumble dried a LOT.

OfstedOffred · 24/01/2022 21:38

M&S but also are you washing coloured clothes in persil non bio?

It's terrible for washing out colours, it's not really suitable for coloured clothes. Our school has red jumpers and I can spot the parents who wash with persil non bio within one term because jumpers brand new 1 term before look 5 years old by January.

Puffalicious · 24/01/2022 21:47

I'll second/ third/ fourth/ fifth Grin M&S. I have 2 grey, wool jumpers that DS3 (9) is now wearing- they are 3rd hand from DS1 (17) and DS2 (15) and still, truthfully, look wonderful. I don't think they make them quite the same as back then, but all jumpers/ shorts/ trousers last the year easily and are then passed on/ kept if really good. The school wool jumper with badge at £28 a pop aren't worth a button after a year, and that's with only wearing each one 1/2 twice a year. Luckily we can also wear plain, so M&S it is most of the days.

Buy the ultimate, non-iron shirts- extra cost but so worth it as they stay white and crisp, even with sweaty, teen boys!

Puffalicious · 24/01/2022 21:48

Sorry once or twice a week.

Camomila · 24/01/2022 21:54

Another one saying M&S, still looks nice at the end of the year (and I washed the trousers daily last year as they were always muddy).

beavertowers · 24/01/2022 21:55

M&S all the way. V long lasting and durable.

whattodo2019 · 24/01/2022 21:56

John lewis or m&S

Clockspanner · 24/01/2022 22:11

Another vote for M and S pinafores.

Any tights recommendations anyone? Currently have grey Sainsburys ones but the elastic in those is apparently terrible and suddenly after a few wears of each pair they are falling down around her legs!

Keiki · 24/01/2022 22:16

M&S do some nice thick tights that don't fall down or bobble, and polo shirts.

BogRollBOGOF · 24/01/2022 22:19

DS1's M&S shorts last for years. Many years!

ParkheadParadise · 24/01/2022 22:21

Don't think it's been mentioned yet M&S 😂😂
Dd's uniform still looks good.

UnicornPoopsRainbows · 24/01/2022 22:23

M&S is great, well worth the price
