‘Hi, thanks for calling. Are you OK? How far away are you?’ www.bbc.co.uk/news/stories-60055916

Saw this on the bbc yesterday and not sure what to think.

Would you call it?

I'm not going to be as alert to someone jumping out on me if I'm speaking on the phone. Also holding your phone is a gift for muggers in London. Also I need my hand free for my wolverine keys.

I can see that I would find it useful if there was a specific reason that I felt unsafe, like a man near be acting creepy or not taking the hint.
But I worry that this could encourage women on a creep-free walk home to focus on the potential dangers. Increasing our focus on this isn't going to be good for our mental health. It's going to make us feel more vulnerable. And the fact is it's the partners at home who are a statistical danger.
So I wonder if, on balance it will make us feel less safe with no trade off of an actual increase in safety.
