Car passenger tested positive

doritolady · 23/01/2022 12:40

My son had a football match yesterday morning and one of the other parents asked if I could give their son a lift there and back.

Last night my son said his team mate had been complaining of feeling unwell before the match.

Team mates dad has just put in the group chat that his son has tested positive for covid this morning.

Now I know it can't be helped, and it's not their sons fault etc, but AIBU in thinking that I should have been told beforehand that their son was not feeling well?

This would have really hacked me off if one of ds2's football team parents had done this to me.

@Theballoonsinthesky

How will the covid lovers cope when the do get rid of testing? People have been so brainwashed by this. It is a mild illness that most people will get over, nothing to be scared of. I've had way worse colds/flu and I'm triple vaxxed. No point fuming over a cold, it's insane!
I'm quadruple vaxxed but still haven't developed any antibodies. For me and the other 1 million + in the same position nothing has changed. When they get rid of testing and isolating, we'll be back to shielding
Theballoonsinthesky · 23/01/2022 15:39

@Sugarplumfairy65 who has told you you'll need to shield? How have you had 4 vaccines? Do you shield for flu? I think the government need to be doing all they can to put peoples minds at rest. The data is there for all to see, the restrictions have been useless including the lockdowns, masks do nothing to stop the spread etc. I feel genuinely sorry for you that you've been made to feel shielding is your only option. I hope things change for you.

VioletOcean · 23/01/2022 15:44

Might be fine, Ive been round loads of positive people and not once caught covid and know of others in same situation. No one knows if you’ll get it or not

winnieanddaisy · 23/01/2022 15:48

I live with my DD .DSL and DGD(16) . She had covid 2 weeks ago . None of us caught it .
I think it's the luck of the draw. Either you'll get it or you won't. I'm considered to be very vunerable, but I'm triple vaccinated and I'm not worried about catching it . Even if I do get it , it should be very mild . I agree with other posters saying that it will end up like a cold or flu . They will stop testing for it soon . If you don't have a test , you won't know if you have got it so you won't be worried . People who are concerned just need to take precautions ( if they want to ) .

DiddyHeck · 23/01/2022 15:49
@DiddyHeck Surely running around a pitch playing football is very different to sitting in a car for an hour with someone who had covid symptoms?
But you said

My eldest has mock exams this week and because of what has happened he could potentially end up missing them when it could have been completely avoided.

If you're that worried, he could've avoided the whole situation given how many on the pitch might unknowingly have Covid?

My oncologist and haematologist have told me to shield.
I've had 3 primary doses and one booster as per the guidance for some cev. None of them have worked.
Unfortunately, due to prolonged treatment for 2 primary cancers, my immune system doesn't work as it should

Presumably the poster is CEV and/or has an autoimmune problem.

My friend is in the same position and it’s difficult for her. I don’t understand how after nearly two years of this, people still don’t understand how not everyone can always have the same carefree attitude as themselves (but then I also imagined that everyone would recognise common Omicron symptoms, but apparently not).

Lolamento · 23/01/2022 15:59

@Hbh17

Covid is no longer a threat, & especially not to kids, so it's really not a big deal. Hopefully it won't be long before all this ridiculous testing stops completely. Just get on with your life as normal, like everyone else is.

stopringingme · 23/01/2022 16:01

Headache and sore throat are the most common symptoms given by the most recent teachers/pupils to test positive at my DD's school.

We have class closures this week and have to test every day for 7 days as there are so many tested positive that they have classed the whole school as close contacts.

Theballoonsinthesky · 23/01/2022 16:05

@Sugarplumfairy65 I'm sorry for your situation. Do you have to be careful about other viruses also? I'm really not being funny I'm just trying to understand what is making this one so different in your doctors eyes given all the data we now have on it. Are you going about as normal at the moment? What will be different when people are not testing? How do you guarantee that you won't come into contact with it at the moment if you're leaving the house?

Russell19 · 23/01/2022 16:06

I currently have covid along with 3 colleagues and we all have headaches and started off with sore throats.

tigger1001 · 23/01/2022 16:13

Did you all wear masks since you were car sharing?

I get it. I do. But it's a chance you take these days. And given your eldest was going to be in close contact with others both in his team and the opposition it does seem a bit mad to be worried now about missing exams.. Plus if they are at the same school they could have passed it on before becoming symptomatic. Same as training.

Yes, they should have said he wasn't feeling well, but very possibly just didn't link it to covid.

My eldest continued to train when we were isolating (he was testing every day and was the only one negative in the house). He got lifts. But the parents did know that we were positive and that he was testing daily. And everyone in the car wore masks.

JustDanceAddict · 23/01/2022 16:16

I’ve had probable symptoms (sore throat/sniffles) and done an lft and pcr been neg so I would have gone too in those circumstances.

MatronicO6 · 23/01/2022 16:25

It depends on on when he was last tested. If he is 15 he likely did a LFT test for school in the day or so before which must have been negative.
Either way this is the reality of life now, you are advised to go with life and no need to isolate until you have a positive test.
If it offers any reassurance in the last month I spent a whole day at home with a couple who both tested positive the next day and didn't get it. Also worked shoulder to shoulder in a small office alongside a colleague who tested positive that night, didn't get it. In both of these cases they also did LFTs in the morning all 3 were negative.

It can literally be a matter of hours between a negative and positive test.

Summerofcontent · 23/01/2022 16:26

All you people saying it's life, just get on with it, would you feel the same if the friend had just vomited and had a stomach ache? Winter vomiting bug eg

tigger1001 · 23/01/2022 16:41

I agree with your last sentence. That's what happened to me. Had a negative pcr. Did a lateral flow test in the morning which was negative and started to feel a bit rubbish by tea time - positive lft. Just 24 hours after doing a pcr.

And from the people who tested positive around us it would appear my partner passed it on while he was testing negative.

I think we need to move away from the blame culture surrounding covid

oncemoreunto · 23/01/2022 16:51

My dc had those symptoms tested negative, DH got those symptoms also negative.
Four days later DH loses sense of taste, tests positive.
I have very slight symptoms, also test positive.
Dc by this point is as right as rain.

I don't think the testing is the catch all some people think.

I have had worse winter colds than I currently have experienced with COVID but will lose a fair amount of pay as I can only work virtually and understandably only some clients want to do this.

I am actually relieved that I have finally caught and can hopefully put it behind me.

I agree that a blame culture with something this spreadable is daft.

Welshmaenad · 23/01/2022 16:59

A child who shares my daughters school taxi tested positive, my daughter had been on a 30 minute journey with them twice a day for the preceding 3 days. She didn't catch it - LFTs daily for seven days all negative, no symptoms. I hope that is encouraging for you.

StillNoFuckingEyeDeer · 23/01/2022 18:18

I think it’s really rude bot to inform you directly after you’ve given their child a lift. You should r have found out about it via a group chat, especially as you may now have to moderate your behaviour eg if visiting a vulnerable relative.

doritolady · 23/01/2022 18:34

@StillNoFuckingEyeDeer Yes I definitely would have appreciated a direct text rather than scrolling through the group chat and seeing the message!

@ExcaliburBaby

Honestly don’t know how people could not have considered Covid at this point with those symptoms
I don't think 'Covid' every time I have a headache or I'm tired! I would probably do a LFT for a sore throat but not a headache or tiredness, I'd be testing every day!
Sugarplumfairy65 · 23/01/2022 22:30

No other viruses would affect me the way that Covid affects people with my condition. I have an indolent follicular non hodgkins lymphoma. Covid attacks the blood and organs of people with this condition.
I work for myself from home, get supermarket deliveries and only really go out to medical appointments and to see a very small bubble of family who test before I see them. My mobility is poor so can't even go out for a walk.
There are 125,000 people in the UK with the same condition as me. I'm one of the lucky ones who can work from home. Many of the others have had to go back to work or school and as you can imagine they are frightened.
We've been given priority pcr tests in the red box so I'd we do catch it they can hopefully start us on antiviral infusions within 5 days but we have no idea what the future holds.
I do think the country need to open up again, but those who are cev need support.

lljkk · 24/01/2022 08:21

Now me and my 3DC will have to test all week and keep our fingers crossed we don't get it.

isn't that exactly what everyone is "supposed" to be doing all the time, anyway? Worrying, testing, worrying, hoping, testing, worrying...

I mean, now if he gets it, you all have a better idea where it came from. That's the only difference.

I think other people have a lot more energy than me. I can't be asked to get angry over a situation like OP describes.

fwiw, I'm hugely more dreading norovirus than SARS-CoV-2 infection. I presume both are in my life within next few years no matter what.

Haveyoubrushedyourteethtoday · 24/01/2022 08:27

@NoWordForFluffy

I don't know anyone who's had covid with a headache or a sore throat.

What percentage of the almost-16m people who are counted as having had Covid do you know?! 🤔🤔

We all did. Has it 2 weeks ago.
