Why do some pregnant women have such a big bump ?

toddlerdanger · 22/01/2022 23:40

I'm 6 months pregnant, heading into month 7. My bump is just so big.

Second baby. I was also huge with the first. I feel like a whale.

Why do some people have a massive bump and others don't ?

I had a 9lb baby and a lot of fluid/water.
I was like a hot water bottle with feet.

Silverswirl · 22/01/2022 23:46

2 reasons.
Long torso
Strong core muscles before you get pregnant. Both will give a smaller bump generally speaking.

Sometimeswinning · 22/01/2022 23:47

Do you have a small age gap between your children? I was told this was the cause of my big bump.

So second bump should be bigger because they were stretched from first bump?

I'm not short. I know shorter women often have bigger bumps. I'm not a giant, just around 5.6-5.7

In my case it was 9.5 lb babies and being a short arse, there was just nowhere to go but out.

First time around, the first person to ask me if I was sure it was only one baby was my GP, while she examined me, not joking. Both times the surgeons remarked to each other about the size of my bump as they were about to start my c sections.

But then, I've a tiny friend who had big babies and normal to small bumps, so who knows.

AsYouWishButtercup · 22/01/2022 23:50

My 1st DV was a tiny bump, I didn’t ‘pop’ u til 8.5 months.

2nd baby I popped at six months, with someone who I worked with at the time who was actually the head of midwifery, commenting how I am FAR too big for six mo tha and she’s quite concerned Confused

I don’t think there’s a rhyme or reason really!

ocd1 · 22/01/2022 23:53

I have small bumps, never measured beyond 35 weeks, and larger than average babies. I'v been told it's my stomach muscles - I don't go to the gym so I assume that's genetic in some way. Weirdly my bump disappears straight after birth too - really squishy though which I totally wasn't prepared for after DC1. Took a few weeks to tighten up.

Yubaba · 22/01/2022 23:55

I had a massive bump with my second baby, he was 9lb 5oz, my 3rd baby I had a very visible bump at 10 weeks, he was expected to be a 10lb chunk and ended up 7lb 13oz.
I’m only 5ft4 and DH is 6ft2.

Spreadingtheword · 22/01/2022 23:55

I thought shorter women had smaller bumps? My first had IUGR so my bump was nothing - but I’m on my second now and due in March.. my bump is bigger than my first definitely.. but still isn’t worthy of any kind of “wow how far along are you?!” “Look how big you are!” “Your bump is getting big” type comments, which most women don’t want apparently.. but I do, I feel like I missed out on the beauty of the bump with my first having complications, I was hoping this time around I would have a huge bump.

For context:
I’m 5ft on the dot.
Had c-section with IUGR baby in Dec 19
Am due in March.
Am a usual size 12 clothes.

I usually see taller women with big bumps; my friend is expecting her first a couple months after me and her 16 week bump was bigger than my 20 week bump. So unfair!😂😂

I could've wrote this post! 7 months, just and huge bump. Huge with my first too. First pregnancy I had so much fluid, every contraction felt like a tsunami! This time I just feel the baby is super long, probably lots of fluid too. Mine are almost 2 years apart, I've heard a small age gap can do it too. What's your age gap?

ElephantandGrasshopper · 23/01/2022 00:02

I had huge bumps both times, but gave birth to small babies. I am 5'2 with a short torso and also had waters that broke like a tsunami.

Bakewelltart987 · 23/01/2022 00:06

I had a huge bump with first born but was small with 2nd and 2nd was the heaviest as they say every pregnancy is different.

SirChenjins · 23/01/2022 00:08

I’m five foot 1 and had a huge bump with DC1 - at 30 weeks I looked like I was full term. He was 7lb 11oz so not huge, but my placenta was massive - the midwife commented on its size. Not sure if that would have made a difference? DC2 and 3 were much smaller bumps.

MichelleScarn · 23/01/2022 00:09

I am 5 ft 0, absolutely HUUGE bump, had the fear for birth as was convinced would have a monster! Went early and had 5lbs 8oz teeny, was absolutely massive placenta for me.

PickAChew · 23/01/2022 00:10

I popped out immediately with all 3 pregnancies. I'm slightly on the short side with a narrow pelvis and slack ligaments.

MichelleScarn · 23/01/2022 00:10

Ah cross posted with @SirChenjins in similar circ!

HobnobsChoice · 23/01/2022 00:12

I had a big baby, a big placenta that the docs and midwives commented on and more importantly polyhydramios so much more amniotic fluid than is usual. I measured term at 32 weeks. Baby never dropped either as she kept floating around

MrsBerthaRochester · 23/01/2022 00:13

With ds1 and 2 I had very small bumps. I lost ds1 at 24 weeks and he was underweight for gestation and ds2 was 4 and half lbs .
With ds3 I was huge from 3 months. Discovered about 25 weeks that I has too much fluid and sadly he was stillborn at 28 weeks.
Dd and ds4 I had small/average bumps and both were 6lb babies.
In my case having a huge bump was an indication of a problem.

HippeePrincess · 23/01/2022 00:13

Big baby, lots of water and a forward tilting uterus for me.

Chely · 23/01/2022 00:13

I get huge bumps because I have big babies and lots of fluid. Our 6th was heaviest, 10lb 15oz at 38+6. I was still weightlifting at 35wk pregnant with her so had strong core and abs. I was ginormous with our twins (4th&5th), 8lb 5oz & 8lb 11oz at 38wk. 1st-3rd singletons were 7lb 7oz, 10lb 12oz & 9lb 10oz.

How did you find out about the fluid ?

Im sorry for your loss. Sad

My daughter didn’t actually have a bump. Even at 38 weeks she didn’t look pregnant….if I hadn’t gone with her to the scans I wouldn’t have believed her. Baby was lying with her hands above her head and my daughter has really strong abdominal muscles.
I looked pregnant from 12 weeks and had a huge bump …so not genetic!

Mine were huge I was often asked if I was having twins 😒 but then one of my
Babies was 10 lbs 4..
so I guess that would explain why I was so huge 🤷‍♀️
