Why do some pregnant women have such a big bump ?

I'm 6 months pregnant, heading into month 7. My bump is just so big.

Second baby. I was also huge with the first. I feel like a whale.

Why do some people have a massive bump and others don't ?

To op I was having scans every two weeks as I have another condition which means my pregnancies are high risk. At 27 weeks one doctor did mention giving steroids and inducing labour due to amount of fluid and pain I was in.
A week later my baby died inside me. I have since read that to much fluid can be an indication that the baby is struggling.
I will always live with the what if about if the doctor had induced me.

Honestly, I ate loads.
I felt sick unless I was chewing a French stick.

Baby 9lb.
Im small.
Dad is big.
But I was greedy. Actually looked like Mr Greedy.
My feet would not even fit in my shoes.

It must be genetic.

I am 5'7" and size 10-12 — I had tiny bumps with each of my three, they were fairly small babies (largest was 7lb), and I was back in my jeans within a fortnight. Just luck and genetics.

I actually lost over 2 stone due to sickness at the beginning, but made up for it with a Wispa addiction later on the pregnancy.

I have a short torso (basically no gap between my ribs and hips) and I looked enormous when pregnant, people kept asking me if I was sure it wasn't twins. I also had a large placenta and lots of fluid, I lost 10kg on the day of giving birth each time.

As much as there's obviously an element of water etc going on. There's also the matter of the pregnant woman's weight.

I've never seen a very slim pregnant woman with an amazingly huge bump, which I guess goes back to what a PP said about muscle strength. If you've always been slim it stands to reason you'll have tighter muscles.

Shinytaps · 23/01/2022 00:58

For me it was… large babies and a short and narrow torso. I had strong stomach muscles pre babies (no longer, alas) and I am slim. I looked huge every time and people never tired of telling me. At least the bumps went down pretty quickly afterwards.

pastaparadise · 23/01/2022 01:08

I had enormous low bumps both pregnancies. So many comments about not having long to go from about 6 months I was convinced dc 1 would be prem. Dp named me Mr greedy.

Im 5ft 2, short torso, not great muscle tone,. Big placentas, 8 lbs 13 babies. Sadly stomach didn't snap back!

Cameleongirl · 23/01/2022 01:17

I'm small-framed, 5'5'' and was fit when I was pregnant, working out in the gym until just before the births. But, although I didn't gain much weight, my bumps were all out front and I had big babies. DD was 9lbs 10oz.

So, I don't think it was poor muscle tone in my case and I'm quite long-bodied. I just produce large babies!

Cameleongirl · 23/01/2022 01:19

Same, @Shinytaps, the weight dropped off after I gave birth.

I was under 8 stone when I became pregnant with DC1. Huge bump, huge placenta. 5 foot 1 tall. I didn’t put on weight elsewhere, it was all bump.

I only got a big bump when I'm in the last qeeks of pregnancy but I have a wide pelvis I think that has alot to do with it

grey12 · 23/01/2022 09:19

@toddlerdanger second bump is not bigger necessarily but it shows up much earlier because the body has already been there. My first I hardly had a belly at 4 months!! For the others at 2 months I could definitely see my belly and struggle to fit on my trousers

Fallible · 23/01/2022 09:28

I think it's down to your body type/shape and fluid. I had small bumps and my midwives always said I had strong core muscles, though I have no idea how as I don't go to the gym or anything. My bump seemed to stretch up and down rather than out, which left very little space for my lungs, stomach and bladder!

Although there were never any concerns about my waters they came out as a trickle and not a gush the way some people describe so I suspect there wasn't as much.

I couldn't believe the size of my babies when they came out, I literally have no idea how they fit in there!
