Tasting my food before me

We went for a curry at a restaurant we go to regularly.

Before my dish was even on the table my MIL had stuck her fork in for a taste and given her opinion, loudly.

Ok or not?

Make a nice ddog /dcat food pie.
. Leave it on the bench for her arrival..

Your update is shocking ... I can hardly believe someone would use your straw to try your drink, that is revolting... well done for having a go at her. I would just refuse to eat out (or in) with her in future. Did she actually apologise?

Babdoc · 09/04/2022 20:27

Sucking someone else’s straw was always a gross breach of etiquette, but in these days of Covid is inexcusable. One hopes your reaction will make her think twice in future. Where are her boundaries- does she have any?

Update

Tonight, my Bloody Mary arrived and MIL whipped in and had a suck through the straw before me. I shouted and made a big song and dance about how fucking rude I thought it was. Family all embarrassed and trying to quiet me but I made my point, loud and clear. I don't think she will do it again. Result. Thank you 😘😘

Good for you! Why are others trying to quieten you down when they know you hate it? Using your straw is fucking rank. I’d want a new drink, especially as she’s guaranteed to have sucked up liquid then it’s gone back in your drink. 🤮

Sorry, but is your MIL an actual gibbon?
autienotnaughty · 09/04/2022 20:50

Horrific she is a psychopath clearly

Rainbowx · 09/04/2022 21:19

Wow well done Op !

WelliesWithHeels · 09/04/2022 21:27

Taking the first sip of your drink with your straw is appalling! Does she display such rudeness to the others at the table or is it always just your food/drink in some gross show of dominance?

WelliesWithHeels · 09/04/2022 21:34

Posted too quickly. Adding: I think that reacting by shouting and cursing isn't an effective response. It brings you down to her level. Next time, accept the drink, lock eyes with her and in a chilly, but polite and quiet voice, slide the glass across the table and say "Here MIL. You clearly need this more than I do. I'll order another for myself."
If you want to be peak Mumsnet, add a small head tilt and beatific smile. This is no time for a the notorious tinkly laugh.
I then would personally decline the next few invitations to dine together, but I tend to have an avoidant personality.
