Man cleaner in women changing rooms

372 replies

Globaluser · 22/01/2022 08:17

So I moved to Europe a year ago nearly and just recently started coming to the gym.

In this gym there were no notices up to state there’s both male and female cleaners. So I was caught kinda off guard when I walked out the shower and came across a man mopping the floors.

So I’m wondering since I didn’t really go to any u.k gyms. Is this actually normal?

I mean for me that means I will be showering at home from now on, as I see a difference between women seeing me naked and a man seeing me naked.
So I just wanted to ask how many of you would mind and how many of you have come across a male cleaner in a womens changing room in the u.k.
Thank you ☺️

@Mollysocks

You think those are two different groups of people?

It's far more likely those who are opposed to trans women in toilets are also those clutching their pearls at a man cleaning in a womens changing room

Iorderedyouapancake · 23/01/2022 10:03

Ok @JigglyPiggly thanks - I had assumed you meant that it’s unacceptable for older or larger women to be naked but not younger/slimmer ones but wasn’t 100% sure so appreciate you confirming

Theeyeballsinthesky · 23/01/2022 10:04

Yeah nah

A man cleaning the womens toilets as part of his job and with a sign saying it’s happening is completely different to any random guy announcing they are a woman that particular day and going into the ladies

But you know this

Eleganz · 23/01/2022 10:04

@girlmom21 it is UK legislation and has provisions that go beyond any relevant EU directives. Also OP does not say if she is in the EU or not, just Europe.

@Iorderedyouapancake OP asked if it was normal in the UK not for a random debate on the provision of a piece of UK legislation that does not apply in the country she is in. In my first post on this thread I did suggest that she needs to consider what is normal and legally required in the country she is in. When in Rome.
@Beebopbopbopbopbop don't swear at me when you're too lazy to read the discussion and see that topic has been discussed
Oh dear, I think perhaps you’re the one who is unable to read as Op specifically stated that there are no cubicles just two small toilets.

And note I have read the topic (I commented yesterday). It’s you who seems to keep bringing up ridiculous “but’’s that are being disproven at every turn.

Iorderedyouapancake · 23/01/2022 10:06

@Eleganz I don’t think this thread is a random debate on a piece of legislation? A few people have stated that it’s sexist to only hire women (or men) for these roles, so I think pretty relevant that the law allows for this type of discrimination

Beebopbopbopbopbop · 23/01/2022 10:08

@JigglyPiggly ah lovely bit of ageism and busy shaming there. Go put your hairy hands somewhere else

shellylongbottom · 23/01/2022 10:08

@VioletOcean

Why people feel the need to be completely starkers in a changing room is beyond me. We have one large communal changing area (with some cubicles) at local pool at the number of people who just strip off (both men and women) is astounding. Walking to locker naked to get a towel, dry themselves, walk back to locker naked to get underwear, walk back to bench naked and then put undies on, walk back to locker

I also find it bizarre and unnecessary. I'm not someone who's embarrassed of my body if someone happened to see, but you can get dressed without being butt nekked

Why are you bringing trans into it, I never mentioned trans?

I said men in a unisex toilet.

Also, clutching pearls? Why are you using a phrase like that to minimise and mock women’s feelings? I don’t feel comfortable with a man in a unisex toilet at the same time as me or a male cleaner in a woman’s changing room. Being made to feel like you’re overreacting about a genuine concern is very ‘ignore the hysterical woman’ and then closes down any debate on womens spaces.

I also don’t think women should clean in mens toilets but that’s more about the woman’s safety.

How in hell is that Pearl clutching? I don't want to see anyone's bits, but especially not a man, and especially not a mans penis is I have my kids with me

girlmom21 · 23/01/2022 10:12

@Beebopbopbopbopbop the conversation progressed since yesterday. HTH.

I don’t walk around naked but if I’m trying to get dried and dressed while keeping covered it takes twice as long so sometimes yes there might be a glimpse of my arse or boobs.

@girlmom21 I answered your post which was left about five minutes before mine.
Not sure why you’re still reaching when literally every piece of nonsense you come up with is shut down by actual fact. So far you’ve tried

 • a two cubicle changing room doesn’t need cleaning (they can be the size of a football pitch)
 • there’s only one cleaner (never the case)
 • The ops gym has cubicles (it doesn’t)
 • The Equality Act means people can’t choose male/female cleaners (they can)

And probably a couple of others.

Hope this a great education for you though

JigglyPiggly · 23/01/2022 10:24

@shellylongbottom ?

So you don't want to see a man's bits but are fine seeing womens bits?

Christ, some of you really need to go back to the 1800's and stay there.

JigglyPiggly · 23/01/2022 10:24

@Mollysocks

Your view should be minimised

It's nutty

Congratulations on your large number of misquotes.

I've been having a discussion with other posters. It's interesting to see things from other perspectives and learn new things.

It's not interesting being sworn at by people who just wants to have a go 🤷‍♀️

I know this is supposed to be a serious thread but honestly some of your posts are just laughable

Eh? Did you even read my post? Seems like you're itching to just argue.

I SAID I don't want to see anyone's particular"y, least of all a mans. Have you got all that?
@Mollysocks

So, let me just get my head around this…

You don’t think women should have access to private women only spaces? I’m assuming you’ve never been sexually assaulted or have any idea of life outside you’re own bubble?

Also, won’t be called ‘nutty’ that’s another ‘ignore the hysterical woman’ phrase that’s gaslighting women into thinking they’re weird for wanting to protect their safety.

I’d have a think about all that internalised misogyny you’re holding in to and read up on why women only spaces are important in society.

Beebopbopbopbopbop · 23/01/2022 10:41

What these misquotes?

They can't only employ women to clean ffs. It's discrimination

They're not recruiting a cleaner for the changing rooms. They're recruiting a cleaner for the gym.

A gym with two cubicles in the womens changing rooms is not recruiting 2 cleaners per shift. It's just not feasible. It's not big enough. They can't pick which sex they want to recruit because either way one of the changing rooms will have a cleaner of the opposite sex. Therefore, the sex of the cleaner isn't covered by the Equality Act.

And in OP's gym there are cubicles available so that maynot apply.

Waitwhat23 · 23/01/2022 10:51

@jessieminto your example perfectly illustrates a point I made in pp about groups of women being excluded - well done you for making the adjustments and fighting for the warnings to be removeded. It was a shame you weren't supported in that by your workplace.

Globaluser · 23/01/2022 11:01

Hi, so the changing room does not have any private cubicles. Only 2 small toilet rooms with the handwashing area outside.

I see that it would be discrimination to not employ a male or female cleaner and I also see that it is good for males to apply for these jobs. I understand you can’t please everyone, so sometimes it’s best for the minority to adjust (if they can).

OP posts:
JigglyPiggly · 23/01/2022 11:04

@Mollysocks

So now you're conflating a bloody changing room with a single sex therapeutic space? (Which I also disagree with but find it odd you're comparing the two)

Also female changing rooms aren't a single sex space

Young boys for example often change in there with their parents

I have indeed been sexually assaulted, raped in fact. However that experience doesn't define me, or make me fearful of all men everywhere. I don't need a special womens only space, thankfully many don't. If you have been through trauma that has left you so fearful of half the population you need therapy.

Fredstapshoes · 23/01/2022 11:11

The lies and misogyny on this thread top everything i ever read on mumsnet

ChaToilLeam · 23/01/2022 11:15

I’m in Europe and my gym has separate male and female changing and showers. No idea about the mens’ changing, but in the womens’ there are NO cubicles, it is open plan, the showers have no curtains. Very little privacy. You bet I would be very unhappy with a man cleaning this area unannounced. I won’t use showers like that even among women only so I go home afterwards to freshen up.

Germany has the reputation of being very liberal with mixed sex nudity, I can assure you that not everyone is comfortable with that. Even mixed sex saunas usually have single sex changing and days or times when only women can go.

Both sexes should have the right to privacy and dignity when in a state of undress. I suspect that some hairy handed ones are getting their cheapies on this thread.
