To feel a bit weepy about Meatloaf dying?

I'm 59 - his music summed up my late teens, early 20's. Bat Out of Hell was like an friend; I know every word to every song.

2016 was a horrid year, losing David Bowie, Prince and George Michael (who was only 2 weeks older than me!) but this one has walloped me in a way they didn't. Wish I'd got to see him live Sad

So many great memories as a 16 yr old when 'Bat out of Hell' was riding the chartsWink

Butteredtoast55 · 21/01/2022 22:57

Bat Out of Hell was the record my oldest friend and I played ad infinitum with much bellowing from our parents to turn the volume down. She texted me earlier to say she's had a cry because she has realised her dream of being his backing singer/duetting on Dead Ringer for Love will never now come true.

BettyBooper · 21/01/2022 23:00

Love the Meat! Sad day 😞

AliveAndSleeping · 21/01/2022 23:01

Love meatloaf. I hate musicians from my childhood / teenage years dying. Makes me feel so old. And he was brilliant. Sad

HeadNorth · 21/01/2022 23:01

I think everyone loved Meat and Bat out of Hell. He is like Dolly - transcends genres and is universally loved.

MrsGinnyM · 21/01/2022 23:01

YABU for calling Meat Loaf 'Meatloaf' but YANBU for feeling a bit weepy about his death.

madisonbridges · 21/01/2022 23:02

Brings back my youth. All the parties where it was played and we all stood and sang Bat out of Hell at the top of our voices. Happy days.
Very sad news. He always seemed like a great guy with a good sense of fun.

Mundra · 21/01/2022 23:04

Maybe it's because I've had a rough day, but I was feeling ineffably sad about this earlier.
I'm 47 and a metal fan, so a bit younger than those who grew up with him always in the charts... but it's Meatloaf, y'know?

And I loved him in Fight Club.

MrsGinnyM · 21/01/2022 23:04

There are a couple of threads in Chat about him today.

PickAChew · 21/01/2022 23:04

I didn't love meatloaf but could enjoy his music. Like Bowie, his is very much a milestone death.

itsanothernamechangeforme · 21/01/2022 23:05

Really weird I've had a meatloaf song randomly in my head whilst sat in bed on my phone, didn't know he'd died until I opened Mumsnet 😥

Cleebope2 · 21/01/2022 23:07

Aw he was brilliant. Just watched a bbc4 docu on him. I also really regret not going to see his live concerts which were amazing .

Aposterhasnoname · 21/01/2022 23:11

Yeah, me too OP, I know every word of every song. I always said there was only two singers I’d cry for when they died . Meat loaf was one of them.

Not everyone. I hate Bat out of Hell. Think it's the worst song ever

But I was sad to hear of his passing.

steff13 · 21/01/2022 23:11

He was on some episodes of Ghost Hunters and he was so enthusiastic about the actual hunting process that it was really delightful to watch. He seemed like so much fun.

MerchSwyddEfrog · 21/01/2022 23:21

I was sad today too. I have happy memories of singing I would do anything for love but I won’t do that with my uni friends at the end of a great night. I’ve listened to Bat out of Hell tonight with my dd who’s 10 and she agreed that it’s a fantastic album. She has got good taste!

Want2beme · 21/01/2022 23:34

I heard I Would Do Anything for Love last week on the radio and really enjoyed it, not having heard it for a long time. I thought maybe he'd died then. When I heard Two Out of Three this morning, I was sad to hear of his death. I didn't realise he was that age - just a year younger than my mum. Flowers

Really?? How did I miss this?? Thank you.

Really sad day. I’m 41 but he was the soundtrack to a lot of my youth, and a lot of memories. My DF was a big fan.

Got to see him live 3 times. Utterly wonderful, amazing showman, such a performer.

Seemed such a lovely guy too.
Genuinely saddened.

DriveMeCrazy1974 · 22/01/2022 07:41

I remember when I was 18, back in the early 1990s, Meat Loaf's greatest hits album was on a constant loop whenever I was walking anywhere. Loved Bat Out of Hell. Loved Two Out of Three Ain't Bad even more.
He was such a showman - very sad to hear he'd died yesterday. I know, in recent years, he'd suffered ill health occasionally, but he was one of those performers I imagined would still be rocking at 90.

GoodnightGrandma · 22/01/2022 07:45

I first heard the album as a kid and was transfixed. The album art work was amazing too.
I’ve listened to that album all my life since, and I am also sad about his death. It’s like a friend I’ve known all my life has died.

chilling19 · 22/01/2022 08:56

Yes the news was a bit of a shock. Saw him live years ago and he was just as good as on vinyl. RIP.

Ilikeviognier · 22/01/2022 09:02

I feel this. I’m 43 and know every word to bat out of hell and paradise by the dashboard light. Listened to him so much in my late teens and early twenties. RIP meatloaf.

Shoobydooer · 22/01/2022 09:06

This tribute in the Guardian is wonderful:

https://www.theguardian.com/music/2022/jan/21/meat-loaf-spellbinding-performer-jim-steinman?CMP=ShareiOSAppp_Other

Captures his OTT style with affection and such a moving final paragraph.

RaininSummer · 22/01/2022 09:07

I have never liked his music and he was terrifically rude to my daughter when in a local hotel she worked at. Always sad when someone dies though.

3scape · 22/01/2022 09:08

It's definitely given me a need to sit down and reflect. So many amazing memories from my youth have a meatloaf soundtrack. Sad
