AIBU for feeling liked a failed feminist for shaving my fanjo? (Lighhearted)

Yes, after arguing for years about how it is a driven-by-porn fashion, and saying teenage girls needed healthy attitudes to their own pubic hair, I shaved mine off. To give it a try, for sex, entirely my own decision.
And I really like it. I haven't seen it since it was bald at 11. It looks all neat and friendly, like a small ham sandwich.
I've been arguing with myself about it all week. It's a bit bristly now but it still feels quite pleasant.
AIBU?

OP posts:
Snugglepumpkin · 21/01/2022 21:30

It's not about that, it's literally about the OP saying it's what it looked like when she was 11.

Nothing nasty about it in what I was thinking.

@Celticroseandsea

When I first saw this thread title I misread it and thought it said

AIBU for feeling liked a failed middle class for shaving my fanjo? (Lighhearted)

Probably because I’ve just seen a thread about being middle class 😂 and I thought “what the hell is a middle class fanjo?”

My glasses are on now GrinBlush

One that enjoys consuming brioche, drives a Volvo and has the name Ottilie, nn Tilly?
SunshineInMyTea · 21/01/2022 21:33

Well, it’s not feminist to do so
(I’m not a libfem)
but I don’t think that’s going to be the thing that stops progression.

Jayaywhynot · 21/01/2022 21:35

@vivariumvivariumsvivaria

"a small ham sandwich"

Mine might look like that if it was unearthed. suspect it'd look like a small ham sandwich that got squished in the bottom of a schoolbag.

Last term.

Spat my tea out laughing 😂😂
HelloFrostyMorning · 21/01/2022 21:36

@Ponoka7

Those of us who've shaved for decades (I'm in my 50's) have been told that we haven't made our own decisions and have been argued with, by people like you that we don't do it because we like it. It pisses me off when we have to defend ourselves and low and behold now those arguing with us are doing it.

Yeah it is a bit annoying I must admit... 'You are NOT doing it for yourself, but because of the patriarchy' has been spouted by women who are against other women shaving their pubic hair for YEARS. Even though the majority of us do it for ourselves!

It's like the 'I hate babies and children' brigade who saw the need to bash me and say I had ruined my life when I had children, having children themselves, and conveniently forgetting the hard time they put me through. Hmm

RobotValkyrie · 21/01/2022 21:43

YABU because it can really feel horrible when it grows back (especially in-grown hairs!! Ouch)

I'd recommend trimming it regularly to about 2 mm length, though. Looks really neat, and doesn't hurt on regrowth.

KatyN · 21/01/2022 21:46

Can I recommend the guilty feminist podcast. It opens with:
I’m a feminist but and then each of the presenters take turns to say what they have done that makes them feel like a bad feminist
It is hilarious.

Fwiw, mine is au natural because I’m a lazy toad

Justenuff · 21/01/2022 21:54

@Justananimalcrossing

For me, bizarrely, I can bald myself with a razor (Gillette whatever) around the most intimate bits but can only use an electric razor (about 1mm cut) for the rest/where the pubes meet my inside leg if you know what I mean!

I've found that way I don't get any itching or ingrowing hairs anywhere which suits me as the bit that needs to be smooth, I can get smooth with the razor without driving myself crackers itching!

puffyisgood · 21/01/2022 21:58

in my non-expert view only the very most hirsute minority get any real benefits from this procedure. but it's really up to the individual.

WonderfulYou · 21/01/2022 22:00

I’ve always kept the hair to a minimum down there.
As a feminist I choose how I want it and I find it more comfortable like that.

I’ve never associated it with men or porn.

BasaltIsland · 21/01/2022 22:02

@HelloFrostyMorning - can’t speak for the poster you quoted, but the only time I shaved it all off was as a teenager and I instantly thought how childlike it looked which I really didn’t like. It was because I hadn’t seen myself like that for years - since I was a child, essentially. So, I’m not sure you have to have a nasty mind to make that connection. I certainly wouldn’t suggest that is what other people should think though.

As an aside, I disliked it so much that I wouldn’t let my boyfriend at the time see me knickerless until the hair had grown back because I thought he’d be put off. How naive I was...

Jinglebellsoncake · 21/01/2022 22:06

A ham sandwich 😂
So accurate

I have had laser and love it. No bristly prickly bits to worry about. I feel cleaner, fresher and more confident (around my DH) without hair.

Luredbyapomegranate · 21/01/2022 22:15

**It looks all neat and friendly, like a small ham sandwich.

I have just snorted out loud and startled my Uber driver out of his reverie about the car in front.

I don’t think it’s feminist to do it, but who gets a 💯 score on that? Not me. It’s not a big issue.

IMO body hair has nothing to do with feminism and everything to do with smelliness/dead skin etc. all body hair smells eventually which is why so many men bloody reek.

Eh?! My very own fanjo has been a naked mole rat, a mighty 70s boosh and everything in between, but it’s never been sweaty or smelly either way because I, you know, shower …? It’s not like a non-shedding dog or something, getting a gradual build up of dandruff and bits of pedigree chum. What a strange comment!

Personally I prefer a clean undercarriage with a modest landing strip - I can’t be arsed with any more maintenance plus I don’t really like the look of the full monty (Naked Attraction always seems to be a parade of raw, stubbly fannies, which look itchy and angry rather than come hither).

But either way, OP, you’re not betraying the sisterhood - we’ve fought for the right for you to style your own pubes precisely as you fucking choose love Grin

Hankunamatata · 21/01/2022 23:49

I like a bikini was with close trim to avoid the horrible regrowth but more that i feel cleaner

Jennifer2r · 21/01/2022 23:51

Hair or no hair, it has absolutely nothing to do with cleanliness. Lots of women think that hair is gross or disgusting or unclean and that is not true. A shower will clean you whether you choose full bush or full Brazilian!

Choices for all but let's stay educated.

Jennifer2r · 21/01/2022 23:53

@asyouwishbuttercup many men reek because they have bad body hygiene NOT because of their body hair.

pastypirate · 21/01/2022 23:56

Urgh. The body hair argument is the same as the 'it's only stale sweat that smells' argument isn't it.

ComeOnSpringtime · 21/01/2022 23:57

Well said! @Jennifer2r
