Moving to a Surrey Town

Which towns have more amenities ie gyms, chain shops, restaurants, cafes etc in order of preference out of:
Bagshot
Farnham
Farnborough
Aldershot
Camberley
Basingstoke

I'm in Reading and it's probably a bit big for me or just not what I imagined it to be - not very modern or car friendly. I'm not finding the traffic an issue, but you can't just park up near where you want to be

Hi OP,

lots of good suggestions on here.
I grew up in Farnborough and did find it dull but there is at least a cinema now & the train links to London & elsewhere are great. There are also loads of lovely Victorian houses if you like period houses, esp around North Camp. And if you're likely to drive anyway you're in easy reach of shops, leisure centres etc in Camberley, Guildford, Farnham, Basingstoke etc. So it depends what your priorities are really.

Otherwise Staines or Egham are worth a look. Central Egham is probably more expensive than your budget would allow but there are nice places a little further out.

And as PPs have said Bracknell town centre is lovely these days for shops, cinema etc so worth a look.

Bagshot is a small village so I think probably too quiet for what you're after - you'd need to go to Bracknell or Camberley for shops etc.

Thanks. Bagshot is 8 mins from camberley and Bracknell and around 12 mins from ascot so all pretty close?

Suggest North Camp area which is between Aldershot and Farnborough. Direct train from North Camp to Reading (and Gatwick airport). Close to M3 and A3, via A331.

wokcommuter · 04/02/2022 22:17

To get what you want for your budget, you would need to be moving further away from London. Like others have mentioned, Didcot or Newbury would give you more for you money than places like Camberley, Farnham etc. You haven't mentioned what your other priorities are, such as schools, public transport, access to London, historical character or modern town, if you need to commute somewhere for work etc.

babyjellyfish · 04/02/2022 22:21

Farnham is nice. Aldershot is dreadful. The other places are OK but I wouldn't particularly choose to live there.

TooMuchTobleron · 04/02/2022 22:51

I live in Bagshot and really like it. Been here 15 years. It's a village but has a large gym and a couple of small independent gyms. Also a Waitrose and a Co-op.
Good links to M3 and as you say, very close to Camberley and Bracknell. Public transport is poor though and for trains you'd be best to drive to Sunningdale and go from there to London but it's not a quick service.
Nice community. Good GP surgery.

PiffleWiffleWoozle · 04/02/2022 22:55

Guildford

Woking - Horsell is nice

Crikeyalmighty · 04/02/2022 23:24

Farnham is nice but I think out your budget

Personally I prefer the nicer bits of Reading to anywhere you mentioned

Otherwise I would say Guildford, Woking or Bracknell

AledsiPad · 04/02/2022 23:45

I’d be inclined to go further into Hampshire tbh; it’s marginally cheaper than Surrey but a fair part of it is only an hour on the train to Waterloo/Victoria. Consider Alton, Bordon, Liss/Liphook, possibly Petersfield (pricey)? If it must be Surrey I’d agree that Guildford side is nicer.

My only requirements are a 3 bed larger semi or end of terrace, with around 1000-1200 square foot or at least 100 square meters, preferably towards the more modern end of the scale and with off-street parking, preferably a driveway.

I like modern towns, not too soulless. I don't need cultural things like Friday markets, theatres or history. I'm more interested in good shops, gyms, bars and convenience for driving. I'd like to feel reasonably safe. No schools needed.

Oh and at present I work from home - I'm a contractor, but this could change in the next contract to being in an office somewhere 1-2 days a week, which j is why I thought been around an hour from London might be useful

I was in Aldershot on Saturday around 6pm and the traffic was painful. Far far worse than Reading - is this a known problem anyone?

Also went to Didcot and definitely a bit quiet for me.. Camberley was lovely but it's so expensive. Farnborough was ok but nothing much there. Bagshot was ok but the house was right next to the bypass.

Looks like it's Reading or Basingstoke.. I really hope Basingstoke isn't as bad as they say..

Would you consider Reigate or Leatherhead

@Samara26 the traffic within Aldershot is not generally a problem, but there is a bottleneck between the town and the A331 dual carriageway.

You said above that you like to feel safe. I would gently suggest that perhaps Aldershot isn't for you in that case as it's quite run down and the town centre can be a bit rough. You would probably be OK on the north side where all the new development is happening, but the properties there are selling at a premium.

rebeccachoc · 08/02/2022 07:46

In the last ten years I've lived in Basingstoke (Hampshire not Surrey as per your OP in case you need to know), Bracknell, Guildford and Camberley so I'm quite good to answer this I think.

Top of my list would be Basingstoke (as long as you like roundabouts as its nicknamed Donut city!). Its very large so lots of different parts of it, so somewhere will suit your budget. There are lots of places to eat, there's a great entertainment park as someone else mentioned with stuff like ice skating to indoor sky diving. Especially there's a great swimming pool and gym with loads of various exercise classes. I understand why people say it's a bit rough, there are areas that aren't so nice and there are shall we say a few characters you'll run into in town, but generally it's OK. Also as someone else said you are only a short drive to lots of lovely villages, lots of historic interest not far away and there are lots of green spaces actually in Basingstoke too, that was my favourite part. The town has a great choice of shops in a big shopping centre can't think of the name right now, I've lived in too many places to keep track! Traffic is about average to bad, depending which way you go.

Guildford would be second on my list. Again it's a bigger place so a choice of places to live but not as many as Basingstoke. It is fairly pricey here though. There is the spectrum leisure centre where you can do ice skating, bowling, swimming gym etc. The town is basically on 2 steep parallel roads that you can cut through between and a small shopping centre. Don't go if you don't like hills or have any mobility issues. There are a fair few of the usual chain places in town but it seems to be more shop closures than opening lately. Traffic is pretty average on your usual rush hour but doesn't take long to get anywhere.

Camberley would be third on my list. There a variety of housing and areas. They seem to be spending money lately in the town, a new leisure centre has opened up which had the usual gym and pool but also got great indoor climbing walls. They've also built a load of new flats and 2 more places have been knocked down so we'll see what is being built there next. The shops are a variety of chains and independent although there are some empty shops which looks sad. There is a place called the atrium which is bowling, cinema and about 8 restaurants.

And in no particular order I wouldn't recommend...

Farnham I worked in for years so know the town well and as others say its quite stuck up. The town is more about expensive boutiques than chain places, I nearly fainted when they opened a poundland. The houses are pricey unless you go to a village a couple of miles away. Traffic is awful through town and going past it in rush hour. There's a very expensive gym and swimming pool in town but not too much else in the way of entertainment. A few pubs in town but nowt special.

Bracknell a good variety of reasonably new housing and at fair prices. Their is a retail park with a few of the big name shops like Currys and a cinema there. The town has been redone recently so lookin good and a few chains and some nice independents, a good variety anyway. I can't think of gyms off the top of my head I apologise, I didn't live there for long and it was years back. I don't like the traffic its horrific to get across Bracknell in rush hour once took me 2 hours and its only about 3 miles. There are some nice green areas in and just out of Bracknell but not too much exciting to do for an adult.

Farnborough is cheaper to live in, but not a huge place so not much variety in areas. The town is not overly big, not many chain places at all maybe a couple of pubs in town that's about it. There's a cinema and I think a gym near the cinema but not anything else in the way of leisure. Traffic is pretty OK even during rush hour. This is like a mini Aldershot as there's a large Ghurka based population (I love the Ghurkas by the way so no disrespectful meant).

Aldershot finally. The housing is cheap and they are doing a lot of new house building currently. But the town is just dismal. A lot of the shops are empty and it's mainly cheap shops, like independent non branded household goods stores. There is a cinema and bingo and a few places to eat. I can't think of gyms here either as I'm not a gym person and I must admit I don't go here more than twice a year. Traffic as I remember is pretty standard for rush hour, not overly bothersome.

So here endeth the lesson on Surrey towns Grin hope it helps.

rebeccachoc · 08/02/2022 07:48

Sorry forgot to say Bracknell is in Berkshire if it's important (I'm thinking school catchments etc when I point out the counties in case you have kids).

Thank you, this helps a lot! Would you say there's much in the way of nightlife in Basingstoke for single people? Not looking for clubs, more bars and pubs in the Center?

Also do u have any views on Reading?

OP posts:
rebeccachoc · 08/02/2022 12:09

I'm so glad I could be of some help.

Basingstoke has a road just outside of the main shopping centre that is mainly pubs so that's the place to go, sorry I can't remember the street name but I'll look it up so you can then look at it on Google Street View and see for yourself. I think there's about 6 pubs in that road, the usual Wetherspoons and some independents so you should be good for going out meeting people.

As for Reading I used to study there so I know the town pretty well (are you getting the impression I get about a bit?!). So I love Reading for the variety of shops, you've got lots of shops with chains and independents so I never go home empty handed!

I think you've got a great variety of restaurants, although mainly chains at the Oracle where I like non chains just for a change. So I think the positioning of everything in Reading is brilliant, a beautiful river surrounded by cinema, restaurants and shops. The nightlife in Reading will be better than in Basingstoke because of just how big Reading is and how it's all in one place. But I'm sure you'll be fine in Basingstoke.

I find the centre of Reading can be quite rough with some of the characters you can find there. I've never seen so many characters (read characters as weirdos) as I do in Reading. I've never known any other place apart from London have bouncers on the door of pubs from 4 in the afternoon on a Saturday, so I can't be the only one that sees the centre as rough.

I love that it's not far to go from the big vibrant city, to the beautiful countryside there.

I don't know much about the housing as I've not had much need to go out of the shopping areas so can't really judge on that.

Overall it feels like a treat going to Reading but I would not feel safe at night on my own there.

Hopefully this helps.

RonCarlos · 08/02/2022 12:14

I worked in Basingstoke with quite a few 'young people' and they all went out every weekend!

Samara26 · 08/02/2022 16:30

@JuergenSchwarzwald

Guildford is too expensive (and when there was a thread on here about where the locals were most stuck up, it came very highly!)

Alton is a good suggestion and is prettier than Fleet but less expensive than Farnham.

As it happens, I've been to Reading this afternoon since commenting today and covid hasn't been kind to it. I can sort of understand why you want to move, although there's more to a town than the town centre. It is very well connected though.

I dunno if it's just me but all the post war buildings and Victorian terraces make me feel a bit depressed. There's also a fair few characters walking around but I think you're always more critical of a town when you're new to it. After visiting all the towns listed at the weekend, Reading felt like a welcome retreat and there was literally NO TRAFFIC in Reading, after I'd being driving around in it all day. Housing is expensive and everyone has advised against Whitley so I'm struggling to find a place. I also get a puzzled look on peoples faces when they ask me why I chose to move to Reading lol
OP posts:
JuergenSchwarzwald · 08/02/2022 17:03

Interesting, I find the traffic in Reading far worse than in Aldershot.

There is a lot of work going on in the area with new housing; water pipes, gas pipes, new roundabout, so it may all be having a knock on effect on traffic levels.

Not sure about Basingstoke, it's been ok when I've been there other than at school/college pick-up time when it was horrendous but that was a one-off.

JuergenSchwarzwald · 08/02/2022 17:05

And yes the A31 is incredibly loud. I went for a few runs/walks around Runfold and Seale during lockdown and the noise pollution is pretty bad. They need to resurface the road!

pickledonionmonster · 09/02/2022 11:40

You visited the six town from your original post? Wow what was your favourite ? Did you just do a drive-by or get out?

I live nearby to one of the six, I'm quite interested in views on Basingstoke.

gingerhills · 09/02/2022 11:45

Reigate is lovely
Dorking is worth a look
Woking is notoriously ugly but lively - lots going on - gorgeous art gallery, a theatre, cinema etc.
Esher is very expensive but also worth a look.

gingerhills · 09/02/2022 11:45

Oh yes and duh - Guildford which is gorgeous.
