Is this unprofessional?

Someone I know who is a bookshop assistant manager has a habit of posting annoying/funny questions and comments from customers on her social media pages. Is this unprofessional? I don't necessarily think it is, I'm just curious as to what the Mumsnet public thinks.

It's absolutely unprofessional.

BurnDownTheDiscoHangTheDJ · 21/01/2022 00:24

Like, things they've said or screen shots of some kind of comments page or....?

I'm not comfortable with either tbh but reporting of verbal conversations would buyer me less than photos of comments cards or something.

OldClothes · 21/01/2022 00:25

Just verbal conversations, from what I have seen.

dolorsit · 21/01/2022 00:26

I don't think so if it is personal social media rather business. There's no expectation of privacy but I guess it does depend on what is being posted.

OldClothes · 21/01/2022 00:29

It's mostly silly questions or complaints from customers, e.g. one was about the charge for plastic bags.

Sean Bythell makes a living out of this!!

I think it's hilarious! Maybe if she was posting names/photos/identifying info people could complain but just a 'heres a funny/stupid thing I dealt with today' is funny. There's a website called Not Always Right which has just this!

Interesting...I wonder if people recognise themselves?

I think it's unprofessional and downright rude.
I once had a procedure done by my gp and later saw he tweeted about it in a jokey way (No word of a lie) and even though I've never let on that I saw it, I've honestly never really forgiven him.

OldClothes · 21/01/2022 00:41

Sorry to hear that @Houseofvelour.

It is on her personal pages but some posts were publicly visible, possibly by mistake.

Yes it’s unprofessional but completely anonymous so harmless really.

In the case of the doctor tweeting it, that is appalling and can get in serious trouble.

This is completely different and I would complain to the practice! If you recognized yourself from what he wrote someone else could too and it's a huge confidentiality breach. I'm so sorry.
HarrietSchulenberg · 21/01/2022 00:59

Shaun Bythell's bookshop hasn't been harmed by doing just this, on a grander scale, in fact I'd say just the reverse.
It's a cracking shop, too, in case you're passing through Wigtown and feel an urge for literary sustenance. Lots of other lovely booksellers in the town too.

Houseofvelour · 21/01/2022 01:05

@OldClothes

Sorry to hear that *@Houseofvelour*.
Thanks. I was really embarrassed by it when I read it.

@RoomOfRequirement it was in 2020 so a while ago now. He owns the practice so I didn't see the point in complaining as it wouldn't really go anywhere IYSWIM.
It's a bit of an odd procedure so not something that would be done daily and he tweeted the same day I'd had it done. I only saw it by chance as I don't follow him on twitter and was instantly mortified.
He's a bit of a tosser so I try and see different GPs within the practice when I can.

WTF475878237NC · 21/01/2022 01:34

I think it's unprofessional personally.

Houseofvelour I would have reported him to the GMC/Ombudsman. You still can if the tweet is still there as your health record is your proof that even if he wasn't talking about you (his likely defense), it was highly insensitive to post it on that day given it wasn't a common procedure. You can say you've just been made aware of it. Typically complaints should be made within 12 months of a matter coming to your attention, not necessarily the date of incident.

Arnia · 21/01/2022 02:01

Deeply unprofessional, it seems restraint and respect has been relinquished for clicks and likes. I'm always a bit Confused when I see medical professionals/lawyers on Twitter (of which there are many) sharing intimate details of their patients. Yes they dont name them but if their patient/client was reading g it would be obvious to them. I'd be mortified if it was me they were speaking about, anonymous or not. It's so crass and unprofessional. I do wonder what's become of the much lauded stiff upper lip. Bring it back I say!

OldClothes · 21/01/2022 07:37

@Arnia I'd hate to see my medical operations posted online.

fairylightsandwaxmelts · 21/01/2022 07:39

Unprofessional but I think it's fine and relatively normal to have a laugh or rant on a private/personal page.

Croissantly · 21/01/2022 07:41

I'd never use a shop where someone felt it funny or appropriate to post what they see as funny or ridiculous questions. I've worked in retail, I know some are ridiculous, but for some people their question makes sense and it's horrible to mock people.

OldClothes · 21/01/2022 08:12

I'm in retail and yes I know what you mean @Croissantly (great name!)

OP posts:
AdoptedBumpkin · 21/01/2022 08:37

I'm really undecided. I suppose it would depend on the context?

ShaneTheThird · 21/01/2022 08:44

I don't see anything wrong with it if there's no identifying information and it's literally just the conversation. I'm in retail and the amount of stupid customers saying idiotic things to me all day never ceases to amaze me. And yes to the bag charge it's been a thing for about 8 years now sick of twats acting shocked by it.

ElectraBlue · 21/01/2022 08:49

Let me guess, she is an aspiring writer? and probably thinks this will get her attention...

Although the comments are posted without anything that can identify the customers, it is really unprofessional.

is she naming the actual bookshop where she works? Because if she does then her employer will not be impressed...

OldClothes · 21/01/2022 08:52

@ShaneTheThird Some people still begrudge the bag charge amazingly.
