To think I'm old?

76 replies

heartachetoheartache · 20/01/2022 21:25

I used to party all the time. I am now 30 and I honestly am most happy sitting on my own or with my kid watching a film and chilling out.

I remember the days when I would be out partying, now I am just so happy chilling

AIBU to think old age is getting to me?

What is it with young people declaring themselves old?

Waxonwaxoff0 · 21/01/2022 14:09

I'm 31 and I'm not old. I have an 8 year old and like to go out partying when I get the chance. Not wanting to do that doesn't make you more mature or morally superior.

SalsaLove · 21/01/2022 14:10

You’re not old until you start having your evening meal at 4 in the afternoon.

cereallover · 21/01/2022 14:28

Well if you're old I must be a geriatric at 36 🙄

What happens if you're young in years but you feel geriatric?
WhatATimeToBeAlive · 21/01/2022 15:05

Nah, you're not old, just boring. I was living my best life at 30.

GertrudePerkinsPaperyThing · 21/01/2022 15:10

allthingsservethebeam

Well you’re not old in that case! And if you feel geriatric, why?

I was old too in my 30’s. Now I’m 44 and the kids are adults/late teens and I am suddenly young again. At least 1-2 nights a week. It’s just the effect of having young children. They are exhausting.

HacerSonarSusPasos · 21/01/2022 15:40

If prefering a chill night in to going out partying is the indicator of old age, then I guess i was never young!

DoraDont · 21/01/2022 15:46

30? Old? Ahahahahahahahahahahahaha. Fuck knows how you'll feel when you hit the menopause then.

I'm about to turn 48 and am only just beginning to feel as though I'm getting old. Crepey neck, creaky joints, and more interested in nurturing my houseplants than my child.

I was backpacking around India when I turned 30, so much energy. Sad

DoTheMerengue · 21/01/2022 15:48

Nothing to do with age is it really? I’m 14 years older than you but love a knees up. Whatever floats your boat.

No everyone is lucky enough to have loads of energy at 30
KStockHERO · 21/01/2022 15:55

I'm in my mid-30s. I don't think of myself as 'old' at all. But I do think of myself as 'getting older' which I am really really enjoying.

In many ways I still feel about 17 years old girl but with the benefit of having the money of a professional 35 year old woman Grin

I feel more free now than I ever have in my life. I feel like I have the least amount of responsibility now than I've ever had. I'm getting happier every year that goes by. I'm getting more comfortable in my own skin every day. I'm genuinely in the best shape of my life both mentally and physically. I'm looking forward to the future, getting older, getting more free, more comfortable.

Having said that...

... I go to a boxing class on Tuesday nights run by a 20 year old man. He was born the year I left school. He started secondary school in the same month I submitted my PhD. He puts on a mix tape called 'Retro Tunes' for our classes which is all music I used to dance to in nightclubs. He's into 'vintage' clothes by which he means clothes from the early 2000s, the types of clothes I'm still wearing as my normal clothes
So, Tuesday nights I do tend to feel incredibly old, like really old Grin Grin

Kelly7889 · 21/01/2022 16:03

No, you aren't "old". What you are recognising is the end of your "youth" - You are 30 years old with a child, so yes, your youth is long over.

RaskolnikovsGarret · 21/01/2022 16:03

I do know what you mean actually OP, and I don’t think it’s an unreasonable assumption for you to make that generally speaking (though clearly not always) older people are less likely to go clubbing than younger people. And I really don’t mean to be patronising, but at 30, you may not know many older people - 60 might seem a different world to you and I don’t think you are being intentionally ageist. But we older folk can and do have active social lives! You’ll know that now.Smile

Things might change as your child gets older. Now both DDs are at university, and we are 50 plus, we go out a lot more. The not cooking definitely helps. And the lack of sleepless nights!

HelloFrostyMorning · 21/01/2022 16:13

@heartachetoheartache

Agree with the majority. Thoroughly daft post! Confused

30 is YOUNG, not even close to middle age. I did wonder if there was some tongue-in-cheekery going on, like 'guyyys, I am like only 30 and feel like sooo old coz I cannae be fucked to go out, and just wanna stay in watching TV. LOL what am I like?' Grin

But the fact you bumped it up after less than 10 minutes shows you are not only very serious, but were absolutely desperate for a response.

'OMG I'm so old...' grunted out from someone only just out of their 30s is a bit pathetic tbh. And as a few posters have said, quite insulting to people 40-45 plus who feel young, and are fit and active, and have a good social life.

I don't think you meant any harm @heartachetoheartache but this is a cringeworthy thread...

I'm nearly 60 and turned down a night out on Thursday, because I'm out every other night this week. I can't cope with that, due to the pause the pandemic brought upon my social life and getting used in the interim to sitting in and watching TV, or even better, watching people on TV watching TV (Gogglebox).

One of those nights out was at a ballroom dancing class with DH - just persuaded him to start a beginners class. Does doing a ballroom dancing class make me old?

AllThingsServeTheBeam · 21/01/2022 16:27

@gindreams

What an insufferable twat the Op sounds
Personal insult
Cheeseycheeseycheesecheese · 21/01/2022 16:27

@TatianaBis

You’re not old until you have 2 pairs of glasses.
Shit, I've been old since I was 7. I had a pair for school and a pair for home. Now I'm 31 and have a pair for work and a pair for home haha.

Or do you mean 2 different prescriptions?

NorthernLighting · 21/01/2022 16:51

@TheFoundation

Ironically, your viewpoint demonstrates your immaturity.
This.
nursecarli · 21/01/2022 16:52

Sorry MNHQ so my post gets deleted but @gindreams horrible, personal insult does not?

Seems to me like you're the insufferable twat to be honest.

I’m 48. I still really enjoy a night out, although granted I’ve realised I much prefer starting early and finishing early, rather than being out til 2am. But I was always a bit of a Cinderella.

Still love to meet people in coffee shops, restaurants, bars. Often now I take 8yo DD with me and we meet family or friends who have similar aged people.

I still exercise 6-7 times a day.

You’re only as old as you feel! I’m off to the USA on Sunday for a fortnight….granted I couldn’t have afforded that when I was younger mind!
