Surely they can’t just get away with this?

Someone found my purse and before I could call to freeze the card, they’ve spent approx £700 on it. There was also cash in there, and the purse was designer. The bank is sorting the spending, and I know I won’t get the cash or purse back.

I have the address of the person who’s been buying stuff, as they’ve stupidly put it down for delivery of items. I have got this from three retailers, so it’s unlikely to be an address they’re using just for this purpose as why would it be the same one? And even if it is, there must be some sort of connection.

Anyway, the police know all of this but it doesn’t sound like they’ll do much as they’ve said they won’t even speak to the bank. The bank’s fraud team doesn’t sound like they’ll do much, other than make sure I don’t have to pay. But that’s not the point - it seems like this piece of 💩 is going to get away with this. They couldn’t even tell me that the items wouldn’t get delivered either, so not only will they get away with it, they’ll be getting free stuff too.

So am I being unreasonable to think they’ll get away with this? I wondered if anyone else had any similar experiences and what the outcome was?

My friend had his bike stolen from his garage a few years ago, a fairly expensive Kona, he just an eye out on ebay and saw someone selling it in parts, he informed the police who said they couldn't do anything, he told them that's fine, I'll arrange to "buy" the parts and when I go to their house to collect I will give the guy whats coming to him, the police decided to intervene, he got his frame back but the rest had already been sold.

fridaycomeon · 20/01/2022 18:06

I had an experience where I left £100 in the bank machine and someone took it. Luckily the bank refunded it as it was a one off.

I recently found a wallet with a card in it. I rang the bank who passed on my phone number to the owner's Mother. It belonged to a young guy who collected it from me. Perhaps that will restore your faith in humanity a bit?

Ponoka7 · 20/01/2022 18:14

@Melly1801, so your sending men to a door to with children living there? What are they going to do? What are you going to do when her reaction is to take pictures or say one of her children has been threatened? Be very careful before you start a face-to-face war with people who are criminals and live in dodgy areas. Most people wouldn't like Children being targeted and that's what you are doing. So harm to a child is worth a purse? A friend of my Son in law went to a house to get back a stolen bike and was beaten to death. People in certain areas don't mess about.

I know how it feels the next tenant to move in after us commited fraud twice, thanks to the bank sent a second credit card out and nothing was done about it.

@ItsCoachBombay

Someone stole my phone from my handbag once, but I had find my phone on it linked to my smart watch, I tracked it to an address local to me. Gave all this information to the police who said "nothing they could do"

I was so angry.

I went round banged on the door, a woman came to the door off her face, I said look no questions asked give me my phone back, she said she didn't have it so I rang it off my smart watch and could hear it ringing, she still denied it.

I lost my cool, told her I was gonna "knock her the fuck out" she called the police, they then arrived on blue lights, I changed tactics and became all soft and polite and tearful saying she had my phone, rang it again, police told her to hand the phone over. Got my phone back, because I caused a "disturbance" and then denied it all, and went all "soft woman, and Oscar tears"

😏

Maybe try something similar 🤷🏻‍♀️

Well done. The cheek of her calling the police and them coming round with blue lights on. It beggars belief.

SeenYourArse · 20/01/2022 18:22

OP if it’s a designer expensive purse she won’t throw it away at all, I’d bet money on her using it herself or selling it in Facebook marketplace or Vinted! Or Depop

‘Most people wouldn’t like children targeted and that’s what you’re doing’ are you on glue?? No they’d be going to speak to their ‘mother’ if you can even call a thief that! Nothing to do with the kids, it’s the thief bringing trouble to her own door if you behave like that expect trouble!

Joysutty · 20/01/2022 18:28

oh dear, some terrible stories and some good answers here.

Mandyjack · 20/01/2022 18:34

My Wowcher account was hacked a few years back which I fortunately noticed purely by chance as had checked my emails just before bed. At first I thought it was a fake email and almost deleted them as I don't use Wowcher much. I rung my car provider Tesco who kept implying that I must've let someone log into my account! They didn't even report it to their fraud dept. Wowcher cancelled the vouchers but 1 of the annoying parts was that when I rung the wine company and a diet food provider they refused to tell me the delivery address due to data protection! So my card was used from my account but I wasn't allowed to be told the address!
Maybe you should knock on the door and ask for your purse and cash!

TheRemotePart · 20/01/2022 19:04

This happened to me about 20 years ago.
Bought random stuff , subscriptions on my card, pottery!?
I was so poor already and I’d walk to machine to find no money. Went on for 2 months.
The bank kept refunding it but refusing to close the account
Even though the police has the address ( they had paid for a Sky subscription) they told me unless it was over £10k fraud squad weren’t interested
Crimes pays…Angry

I am furious with police too OP. I have a btl house and tenants.pf 3 years decided to move out. Fair enough but they did not hand keys back instead they have them to 'friends' who moved in without my consent or knowledge and trashed the place. I went around only to find strangers at house. I asked them to leave as had no right to be there. They laughed. I rang the police and they said nothing they could do even to though trespass is criminal offence. I had to wait all over Xmas and NY checking every few days until one day they were all out so DH changed the locks and we got it back under our control. The mess they left was disgusting. I had to leave a note with my mobile on asking them to contact me to collect their stuff. Only 1 came and collected his stuff. I have to wait 30 days before I can dispose of it.

HopelesslyOptimistic · 20/01/2022 19:15

Make a formal complaint and you will definitely get a response.

I was going to type a lengthy reply to you, but all I’ll say is bore off.

Complain to the Police and Crime Commissioner if the police will not pursue it.

On my days off I watch that nightmare tenants programme on C5. It amazes me that people can act like that and feel no shame.

Melly1801 · 20/01/2022 19:19

@SeenYourArse exactly, no idea what they’re on about - the children are only poor because their parents are criminals.

Melly1801 · 20/01/2022 19:28

Thanks everyone, except for the one strange comment…

Lots of stories about the shocking state of crime 😠 I will definitely be complaining if nothing is done, I’ll wait to hear back from the officer first. I’ve had tracking details from a company which confirms a parcel was delivered to the address, which is annoying as I know they’ve got something for free but hopefully this will help.

I’ve found out lots more today, and apparently the police (and another agency - I’ll let you all guess which one) are regulars round there, so hopefully they can make at least one more visit.

Definitely going to do the glitter and dog poo, maybe even a combination. And have also been checking selling sites for the purse. Will keep you all updated!

OP posts:
Jobseeker19 · 20/01/2022 19:34

I would put it on YouTube and Facebook local.
I would also go round and lie saying that the police have said my credit card was used from this address and they will be coming round in the next few days. Or they return your purse you will be willing to drop the charges.

SirGawain · 20/01/2022 20:11

@Conspiracyornotr

What a waste of space 😒 bet u was fuming they have the evidence and can't do anything that's appalling!! X
And for those whose first language is English!
CaveWoman1 · 20/01/2022 20:14

Don’t go round to the address. You mustn’t put yourself at any potential physical risk. The thief also has your address remember, & whilst it’s a horrible thing to lose so much money it’s still not worth anything else that might happen to you if you show up on the doorstep. Just not worth it. You don’t know who will open that door or what they might be capable of

mumda · 20/01/2022 20:16

Ring the police fraud lot again. Email your MP.

Ring the card lot again.
They should be dealing with this properly.

bcc89 · 20/01/2022 20:31

You have their address, post them some glitter.
Twice.

redandwhite1 · 20/01/2022 20:33

I had a similar experience and my bank wasn't interested and basically said I wasn't charged so just forget it

It's silly as they'll just do it again and again!!!

Harmonypuss · 20/01/2022 20:39

If be sending someone round there to "collect the items they've bought for you".

MyView2 · 20/01/2022 20:42

I had a similar-ish experience years ago before chip and pin and contactless was a thing. Fortunately I had cancelled my card straight away but any transactions under £50 still went through regardless. The thief obviously knew this and used my card continuously at the same petrol station signing as me and had weeks of transactions just under the £50 mark. I didn’t lose money but the bank did. The bank phoned me every time my card was used to check if it was me and every time I reminded them no, as they could see I had reported my card as stolen. I told the police too and nothing happened. I felt like getting a job at the garage to catch them myself!

Marlena1 · 20/01/2022 20:46

Similar happened to me. They even bought Netflix!! It was in the city centre and they would have been on many cctvs so I find it really annoying. I got all the money back but still annoys me how someone could see me drop my card, pick it up and spend freely. I've lost count of the cards and phones (and dogsHmm) I've found and always found the owners!
