Surely they can’t just get away with this?

Someone found my purse and before I could call to freeze the card, they’ve spent approx £700 on it. There was also cash in there, and the purse was designer. The bank is sorting the spending, and I know I won’t get the cash or purse back.

I have the address of the person who’s been buying stuff, as they’ve stupidly put it down for delivery of items. I have got this from three retailers, so it’s unlikely to be an address they’re using just for this purpose as why would it be the same one? And even if it is, there must be some sort of connection.

Anyway, the police know all of this but it doesn’t sound like they’ll do much as they’ve said they won’t even speak to the bank. The bank’s fraud team doesn’t sound like they’ll do much, other than make sure I don’t have to pay. But that’s not the point - it seems like this piece of 💩 is going to get away with this. They couldn’t even tell me that the items wouldn’t get delivered either, so not only will they get away with it, they’ll be getting free stuff too.

So am I being unreasonable to think they’ll get away with this? I wondered if anyone else had any similar experiences and what the outcome was?

Post a warning about the address on next door app or similar.

SomePosters · 19/01/2022 20:33

@Clymene

I'd go into the police station and ask why they aren't pursuing a criminal.
Just wait till you hear about the government sponsored industrial war machine
Chimley · 19/01/2022 20:38

The authorities attitude towards this absolutely does my head in. It's not a victimless crime. As OP said she's lost the value of the purse, cash and replacement of driver's license. But on top of that it makes you feel shit. I had my card stolen last year and had an online purchase I managed to block. But I'm upset at the thought of a scumbag trying to steal from me. I am a victim of crime.

If the authorities took it more seriously and put more resources into it there would be less crime and fewer victims because the criminals would be caught/in jail and it would also put people off doing the crime if there was more chance of getting caught.

And it's not victimless because we all pay through higher fees from our banks. Pisses me right off.

Someone stole my phone from my handbag once, but I had find my phone on it linked to my smart watch, I tracked it to an address local to me. Gave all this information to the police who said "nothing they could do"

I was so angry.

I went round banged on the door, a woman came to the door off her face, I said look no questions asked give me my phone back, she said she didn't have it so I rang it off my smart watch and could hear it ringing, she still denied it.

I lost my cool, told her I was gonna "knock her the fuck out" she called the police, they then arrived on blue lights, I changed tactics and became all soft and polite and tearful saying she had my phone, rang it again, police told her to hand the phone over. Got my phone back, because I caused a "disturbance" and then denied it all, and went all "soft woman, and Oscar tears"

😏

Maybe try something similar 🤷🏻‍♀️

Call me a resource wasting cow but I'd totally have done the same thing! Well done you.
SailingNotSurfing · 19/01/2022 20:46

I would definitely confront the woman if you're 100% sure she's not being used by other criminals, and demand the return of your purse and driving licence.

I couldn't live with myself if I bought anything with money that didn't belong to me! Some people have no moral compass. I bought a Radley purse from a charity shop for a pound - it has a biro mark on the inside which came off with hand sanitiser.

Anyway, in the little zip up pocket on the back was a folded up £20 note. I wasn't sure if the donor of the purse put it there deliberately for the charity, or had simply forgotten about that little pocket. I took the £20 back to charity shop regardless, it wasn't my money to spend, and I was already over the moon about my bargain Radley purse!

Heads up - the address is not that likely to be theirs. People choose flats with outside post boxes etc.

I’ve been to the address - it’s a house, no outside postbox. They also ordered from Just Eat - would you order a takeaway to another house in the hope you’d intercept the driver? Seems unlikely.

Also - to be very judgemental - from the state of the house, I would not put this past her.

We had the same thing. DH's card was cloned. As part of it they had opened an account with Next using their name but our address, then changed the address. We were notified by email, thanking us for updating them. Barclays were good and refunded everything. Next were good and put a block on our name and address so we would have to take ID in person if we wanted to open an account. Police uninterested, despite the bank telling us that someone had gone into branch to try and access the account, pretending to be DH but failed security checks.

A few years later, someone used DH's details to make 4 fraudulent universal credit applications. That was a right pickle because our Tax Credit claim was automatically cancelled as a result. It took them weeks to sort it out, we were without tax credits for ages, and for ages, once they decided we were telling the truth, they had to pay our tax credits by manual transfer because the system couldn't cope with the claim being reactivated. Police were completely uninterested because apparently it isn't a crime to use someone's details to try to get money, only to actually get it. Hmm

sheiselectric · 19/01/2022 21:14

Send her a glitter bomb

www.glitterretribution.co.uk/

Or some dog poop.

Call some double glazing companies or Jehovah witnesses and say you're interested and give her address.

shedevill · 19/01/2022 21:23

There must be loads of spam stuff you can order for their address!

Theunamedcat · 19/01/2022 21:25

I had something similar I could prove my identity had been swiped orders are in my name etc etc the police said can you prove it wasn't you that placed the order? And just put the wrong address in? OK yes its personalised toys not in my child's name clothing that wouldn't fit my child (newborn girl clothes my girl was ten etc) they insisted that as I had managed to cancel the order no harm was done I said its identity theft we can't do anything about identity theft....I was a bit ffs its still a fucking crime eventually they agreed to speak to her came back to me telling me she was bipolar and I needed to stop harassing people to do something about her poor little lamb with a mental health condition

Like her committing a crime is my fault

Lolamento · 19/01/2022 21:27

What a disgrace! No wonder why these crime happens. if I knew the address I would not leave it like that.
The credit card will cancel the charges if they have not been cleared yet or shown as pending. Did you have £300 in cash? I would be holding the purse tight if carrying that much.

It wasn't long and pink was it? I once lost one and it had £20 in!

You'd have to find a police station first!
Georgeskitchen · 19/01/2022 21:34

Could you cancel the items the person has ordered?

NotTheGrinchAgain · 19/01/2022 21:35

@ItsCoachBombay I like your style.

I cannot believe all these stories - what happened to "crime doesn't pay"! It's outrageous what people get away with.

No, the purse cost that much.

The police seem uninterested in investigating any crime at all, including rape where the conviction rate is 2 percent.

Same, they should be doing their bloody jobs. Can you ask to speak to someone higher/put in a written complaint?
CharlotteGoldenblattYork · 19/01/2022 21:54

Unfortunately, scum bags always get away with things like that. The police seem to take the view of 'awww bless them' and see them as lovable rogues!

Shitzngiggles · 19/01/2022 22:03

We had a similar situation. Someone took out car insurance in dh's name which I thought was insurance fraud. No, the police couldn't give a fuck. We even gave them the name of who we suspected it was, still weren't interested. Beggars belief.
