To expect an exchange or refund?

I bought a new TV online from Currys, picked it up, sound was dreadful, took it back and exchanged it in store for another one that had good online reviews. Took that one home, picture quality is awful. Took it back in again to try one final exchange and was told I couldn't as goods have to be faulty to return, and the first time was different as I'd bought online rather than in store.
So I'm stuck with a TV of rubbish quality. Do I not have any rights in this situation?

Is it much bigger than your previous TV? Possibly your eyes are just adjusting to different resolution?

HaveringWavering · 19/01/2022 17:17

But if it’s flickering then of course that’s a fault!

HaveringWavering · 19/01/2022 17:17

So just say that.

Rodion · 19/01/2022 17:23

I'd still go to another store and add that you'd got this TV as an exchange from a faulty one but that this one has a different fault (screen not focussed and remote not connecting reliably). If they won't accept that I'd pursue some of the higher up complaints mentioned here.

Kuachui · 19/01/2022 17:24

take it to a different currys and say its faulty and that sometimes theres no picture or something. i had to do the same for a faulty laptop with them

DoctorManhattan · 19/01/2022 17:31

Although not unheard of, it’s fairly rare for a new TV to be faulty and give a blurry effect. Screen faults will usually manifest as pixelation, black areas, poor backlight.

My guess is that it’s what was mentioned earlier in this thread, the motion smoothing effect which many modern tvs have and which often end up reducing cinematic quality visuals to a soap opera effect. It’s meant to enhance visuals but can often do the opposite and end up leaving it looking blurry and strange. I’ve disabled it on every TV I’ve bought. Tom Cruise even spoke out against it LOL, Google ‘Tom cruise motion smoothing’.

No issues with Samsungs here, I’ve sourced circa 8 of them for home and family and probably another 10 in my job for workplace conferencing, all have been great.

I’d be very pissed off too Angry

@Cuddlemequick I think you can turn this setting off. Does this help at all?

Went to a different currys and a lovely young man gave me a full refund!
Now please could I have recommendations for decent tvs under £200? I promise to look at it before buying!

Do you have a Richer Sounds near you? They tend to offer good value, and far better customer service. You can order online from them too.

mogsrus · 19/01/2022 18:19

Return to shop, get them to set it up,view picture & see what they say, stand your ground if you don’t agree with what they say....not fit for purpose

Gazelda · 19/01/2022 18:23

That's great OP.

Good shout to try Richer Sounds too, they are renowned for excellent customer service.

Excellent!

We bought the previous version of this one for my son earlier this year. If you find it and scroll down they have a "used" version - this is what we did and the only thing that was damaged was the box. The used version on there is £161 at the moment so well within your budget.

What size are you looking for?

Wouldlovetobeinthesun · 19/01/2022 22:36

Don't know if you can still join Which for £1 for a month's trial? They would be helpful for honest reviews of tv's.

Cuddlemequick · 19/01/2022 23:16

Nothing bigger than 40" will fit in the corner of our little living room

The Citizens Advice Bureau gives the following examples regarding mis-selling:

  1. giving you wrong information about the product or service
  2. giving you the wrong advice about what product would be best for you
  3. wrongly saying you need to buy extra things to make the most of your product
  4. exaggerating what the product can do compared to other products
  5. advertising something as reduced or a sale item when it wasn't ever sold at full price
  6. keeping important information about the product or service hidden or obscured

I’d say that you could argue that because the picture is blurry, Point 4 stands as does Point 2. At the end of the day, had the salesperson said ‘the picture might be blurry’ you wouldn’t have bought it.

teaandtoastwithmarmite · 20/01/2022 14:00

If you have enough for a Sony I would highly recommend one. We've had our Bravia for 12 years and it still works absolutely perfect. Ours is 42 inch.

teaandtoastwithmarmite · 20/01/2022 14:01

And it's been through 4 house moves including being in storage for a while.
