To walk my in season dog? Is it a criminal offence?

Just that really.

I’ve just been stopped by a local dog walker and she politely but firmly told me it is a “Criminal offence to walk an in season bitch; under a section something…? ”. She stated that if a male dog follows my dog out of the park and gets hit by a car I am legally and criminally liable. She also said I am ruining all dog walks for entire dogs.

I did politely ask what it is owners are meant to do as dogs need walking - she said pavement walks in the dark. As a lone female in london I won’t be doing this.

So yes what are peoples thoughts. Is it actually illegal because I can’t imagine not being able to walk her for three weeks at a time. Twice a year.

She always remains on lead and is small enough for me to carry. She is three years old and I’ve never had an issues - if a male dog has shown interest they’ve usually been called back by an owner.

In response to “have her neutered” I will once I have decided whether Or not to breed from her.

@MorningStarling

Good to know dog walkers are inconsiderate or rude to other dog walkers, not just innocent members of the public.
Innocent members of the public? Like people walking their dogs are?

So many unwanted dogs and cats, why risk bringing more into the world? Fortunately even in some of the poorest places, there are people doing their best to care for these poor animals:

@XiCi

Every single dog should be spayed/neutered by age 2 unless owned by a licensed breeder unless there's a medical reason not to That's not correct and is outdated advice. It is not recommended any more that male dogs are neutered. Though I hadn't considered that maybe this was because the vetinary world had been infiltrated by the Taliban

It's not illegal but it does cause huge problems for owners of entire dogs. Of course the owners should have control of their dogs if they encounter you but it's by no means easy to deal with. And even if you avoid busy areas, your bitch will leave a lovely scent behind her for the whole of your walk. So, when I walk my boy through there a couple of hours later, he's still going berserk because he can smell her. Now imagine how that plays out when lots of in season bitches are all wandering around the place... our peaceful walk goes our the window.

Whilst I agree that animals not being bred should be neutered, my Labrador is a stud dog. I do breed from him. The solution is for responsible bitch owners to keep their girls home when they're in season. A couple of weeks being let out in the garden won't kill them. It's what I've always done when I've owned bitches.

It’s besides the point, but as lovely as it would be to give homes to rescue animals before breeding, it’s not actually that’s straightforward. The vast majority of rescue dogs seem to have a combination of unknown history/aggression/unpredictable behaviour/anxiety/unsuitable for children/unsuitable for homes with other pets. Cats are usually more straightforward admittedly.
