What motivated you to lose weight?

Nothing has helped motivate me so wondering how others got motivated. My health is deteriorating so you would think that would be a big motivator! But it’s not. What motivated you?
**@Butteryflakycrust83Just* above you is @astridpeth's story of losing her gran and her mother to the same cancer, the main risk factor is obesity. Above her is @5128gap talking about trying to reduce her covid risk, and above her is @Wexone and @FortunaMajor* talking about addressing their weight to head off early signs of health issues and a harder menopause.

I'll let those women say whether they were coming from a place of disgust and hatred but that's certainly not what I take from their posts.
Quite the reverse. I've said this on other threads, but I also became quite aware of my age the last two years (covid again and the risk to over 50s) I decided it was time to view my vintage body as I might a valuable antique. Too precious to mistreat, and deserving of the best care to preserve its beauty/functionality. So lots of self love here.Smile

FortunaMajor · 18/01/2022 18:47

No hatred here either. I'm more interested in what my body can do, than what it looks like.

I enjoy hiking, but huff and puff up every hill. I've lost 9kg since last time I went. I wouldn't willingly put 9 bags of sugar in a rucksack and carry it up a hill, so why would I want it on my body.

I haven't lost weight for the sake of it, I lost it because I want to be healthier and fitter.

Because it all comes from a place of such hatred and disgust.

You can take care of yourself without being slim. You can take care of yourself without thinking your body is disgusting.

I didn’t think my body was “disgusting” and I didn’t hate myself. I felt flabby (which I was). I felt sluggish (because I was).

My worth as a human has not changed since I lost the stone is put on. I was fat because I wasn’t taking care of myself. I’m much, much fitter and healthier and I’m happier because of that. I also look better.

EssexLioness · 18/01/2022 19:28

@Butteryflakycrust83 I don’t agree, many people including myself have said that our motivation came from health concerns. Wanting to live a healthy, active and full life comes from a place of love and self respect.

Lovesacake · 18/01/2022 20:54

Yep health concerns did it for me. I honestly didn’t mind being fat, and I wouldn’t mind being fat for the rest of my life but it got harder and harder to ignore the knee pain, heart pain and imminent diabetes.
I never hated my body I actually had a lot of fun when I was fat but the health issues were not fun

I agree with this.
@nadiamumoftwo that is amazing! Please share with us how you shifted so much weight
Aw thank you! If I’m completely honest and this is not intended to be braggy, the only thing I really changed was my exercise. I started doing 10-20k steps per day for a bit then upped this to about 20-30k a day. I got a bit competitive with myself and did a few Fitbit challenges (I did over 100k steps in one day once upon a time!), I still do minimum of 10k a day and sometimes do 30k at weekend. Helps I have an active dog!!

In terms of diet I don’t think I’ve significantly changed anything, I’ve never been a sweet tooth but crisps were my downfall so I stopped buying them weekly and now buy some as a treat now and then, I still have big portions and weekend takeaway (I’m a foody) but will try to have a good balance.

I have also done Gousto for over a year now and get 4 x meals per week from then as my Monday - Thursday meals and they are pretty healthy and low calorie, but most importantly delicious. If you’d like a code to try then just let me know!

Good luck x

That's really inspiring @nadiamumoftwo

I'd love a Gousto code if you have some to use up Smile

I learned that with arthritic knees. (and pretty much everything else), I can't comfortably walk uphill or even downhill (I live in a hilly part of the country) without severe pain while carrying more weight than necessary. Nothing to do with self hatred.
Leftbutcameback · 22/01/2022 22:08

My new journal has just arrived - it's a body positivity one with exercises to do and I hope it will be the start of something good! Completely agree with what a PP said - I need to like or at least be neutral with my body.
