To find baby photo shoots a bit weird ?

Just seen on fb a friend took her newborn to a photo shoot. Baby was dressed in all sorts of costumes including a bumble bee and was contorted into all sorts of positions for photos. To me a newborn baby is so beautiful without all of these weird costumes and settings. Aibu?

I've had them done for all three of my children, no costumes or headbands or anything like that, just the baby on a rug or being held by me/their dad.

I'm not bothered if people think they are tacky, I love those photos.

appleturnovers · 17/01/2022 23:09

My cousin had one done in this really weird pose where she was sort of crossing her arms in front of her chest with the sleeping baby curled in a ball sort of balanced in the mother's cupped hands. Hard to describe but all I could think when I saw it was "that looks like a really awkward position and that baby looks like it could easily fall".

There's also the fact that when they don't have a nappy on I just think "someone's about to get shat on". I just can't enjoy the photos as they make me feel uneasy.

Weirdest things ever, especially as newborn babies look like shrivelled grapes

Because of this thread I did a search to see the kind of photos talked about as hadn’t seen many and yes, no offence but most don’t look good. Much better to wait a few months for their cheeks to fill out and they look cute.
LizBennet · 18/01/2022 09:09

I hate them, and agree with pp, especially the hands under chin pose.

CounsellorTroi · 18/01/2022 09:37

I saw one - photoshopped obviously - of a naked baby curled up in the middle of a flower. Very naff.

I don’t like posed family studio portraits either. Something very “look at us” about them. Give me a natural photo taken with the self timer anyway.

SailingNotSurfing · 18/01/2022 10:35

They remind me of those godawful reborn baby dolls - the ones that actually look like dead babies. Shock

Why do people buy them? The reborn dolls, I mean, not the baby pix. Each to their own on that one.

OhdearOhdearOhdearIndeed · 18/01/2022 10:42

Don't understand them, but don't really care what other people do, as it's their money.

It's so expensive and doesn't seem worth the money to me. I've took some nice photos of my kids that are a bit less staged and although the quality isn't great, I get reminded of what we were doing at the time when the photo was taken which is nice.

newnameforthis76 · 18/01/2022 10:47

They’re not my thing, personally, but I don’t think I can bring myself to give a shit about how someone else chooses to photograph their kid. Just because I wouldn’t do something, that doesn’t make it weird.

Well you've said it yourself, the quality of your home snaps isn't great. I wanted nice, simple photos (the babies aren't all naked or in costume or anything) that were good quality.

In my case, due to various not very nice reasons, I do not and never will have a photo of myself as a baby or child. Not even a poor quality one. That probably influenced my decision.

hangrylady · 18/01/2022 12:38

"Common as muck", "vile", "ridiculous". Peak mumsnet twattery right there. I have a canvas (shock horror) of my 2 week old son in a wooden hat and I like it. It's son, my house and nobody else's snobby business Grin

Quite often it's because they have in fact had, a real dead baby.
CustardGoodJamGoodMeatGood · 18/01/2022 13:08

We had a newborn photoshoot but they were just natural of her in nice babygrows we'd brought and she was asleep. No stupid poses or baby propped up on a chair or in a bath or whatever. I hate those stupid outfits where a baby is dressed up

sofakingcool · 18/01/2022 13:09

I had a photo shoot done with DS1 was a baby - 18 years ago

I've got a cracking pic of him sat holding a paint brush, easel and with a beret on his head Grin, saving it for his wedding day...

TBH they were all hideous and have been gathering dust under the bed ever since

MmmmIsee · 18/01/2022 13:29

Are people still doing that thing where they put babies into a really weird, tight net thing? So bizarre and uncomfortable ..... see also giant bows/headbands on bald babies

MmmmIsee · 18/01/2022 13:32

Also etheral type pregnancy shoots with flowing cloth and gormless male somewhere. Each to their own and I am v cynical today..

Chasingaftermidnight · 18/01/2022 13:42

Obviously it’s al a matter of personal taste but personally I think these photoshoots make the babies just look like a jacket potato in crocheted knickerbockers. And the parents ALWAYS look knackered.

Yes. I had a baby last week and I really would like a photoshoot (one of the natural ones, no pots or flowers or buckets). But there really is no getting away from the fact I look like roadkill at the moment.

polexiaaphrodesia · 18/01/2022 14:33

Friend has a newborn shoot where her DS was posed in a suitcase with a little label on it like an evacuee. He looked like he had been abandoned at a railway station which was clearly not the intention. I always think that the babies in costume look a bit cold although both of mine were winter babies so always well wrapped up.

Justme10 · 18/01/2022 15:22

I'm common as muck then Grin
I love DS1 newborn photos, no cgi or costumes though.
Still gutted I couldn't get them for DS2 because of the pandemic.

Halfabag · 18/01/2022 20:33

Why do so many people pay a wedding photographer so much money, if people having professional photos done is tacky?

TheMarmaladeYears · 19/01/2022 11:45

@Halfabag

Mainly because most wedding photography manages to avoid squeezing the subjects into flower pots or similarly strange receptacles? Although that'd liven up some of the duller wedding coverage. Nobody is suggesting professional photography is tacky. Instead, it's a particular style (not all!) of newborn photography under discussion.
RJnomore1 · 19/01/2022 17:07

I’d say wedding photos are a record of an event but I don’t like the over stylised ones of those either, the dress on the hanger/bridal party with glass of champagne getting dressed etc etc.

I supppse to be fair you had to have A wedding photo…not an album…

RJnomore1 · 19/01/2022 17:09

No no you USED to have A wedding photo as in one photo, sorry terrible typing

Biker47 · 19/01/2022 17:26

Tacky and chavvy, right up there alongside cake smash photoshoots.

Halfabag · 20/01/2022 05:11

@TheMarmaladeYears sorry I should’ve been more specific. I read a couple of posts about people getting any sort of photography done professionally is showing off type thing, and really it’s just recording moments in time, in an aesthetic of your liking. Just like weddings etc. And no the overstyled babies aren’t my thing but I do like stylised pics of the details. We tend to perfect every detail of a wedding, for one day, I want photos to capture it forever (I wouldn’t display them likely, but it’s a nice thing to have an album somewhere. Even in a drawer to look back at some day.
