I paint. I've probably painted most of my friends and family over the years. Portraits but a fair few of my friends nude too, from photos. It would be weird if he DIDN'T want to. Plus, finding a model to sit live for a portrait is difficult and/or expensive, so it's no doubt a helpful thing for him.

Yeah, I’m not sure I’d want to be my new boyfriend’s free model. I’ve done it for friends in their art student days when they’d hadn’t a bean, but unless it’s for a quick sketch or study, it’s quite the time commitment.

They'd practically pin people to a seat to paint them. I wasted hours of my teens being draped in ridiculous cloth with a crick in my neck while my friends were getting plastered on cider down by the river.

Unless you really don't mind sitting very very still for so long your bum goes numb while your hands get pins and needles and your neck aches from an unnatural angle 'that is a marvellous contraposta' don't do it!

Lots of portrait painters like to get new subjects to paint, I don't think it's odd at all. You will have to see if the painting is a good likeness, and not a Picasso type one.

As I said I am not sure of the ins and outs
Of note we are going to an art gallery this Friday (keeping the theme going) I can point to paintings and see if I can get an idea about what he wants to do

He probably just doesn't want to pay for a life model! Don't do it if your uncomfortable with it but I the art world its a very normal thing to do. I would decide whether I felt comfortable with the person and where and who they would be showing the painting to.
