Because this has dragged on for so long

It may never end,
Companies have realised how much money they will save not having staff in the office, or , depending on business, may keep you at home then have the room to employ more staff.

united4ever · 16/01/2022 17:40

For many it will be never, especially if you include hybrid working. It suits both parties in many cases. Employer saves thousands on rent and employee saves commute time and cost.

Even things like it support and facilities departments can be cut to save further money for employer.

AnnaSW1 · 16/01/2022 17:41

I don't want it to end!!!

Livpool · 16/01/2022 17:41

I hope never completely goes. I love it

thepeopleversuswork · 16/01/2022 17:44

I don't think its going to end abruptly for everyone. A lot of companies have reshaped themselves to take WFH into account because it makes no sense to pay for office space that's not used. A lot of staff have made it clear they will quit if they are forced to work FT from an office. We're never going hook line and sinker back to the way it was.

I think for most people for whom WFH is a possibility it's going to be hybrid. And some companies will mandate office working but a lot will require some days in the office and some from home. It's not going to be everyone going back on the same day.

Theunamedcat · 16/01/2022 17:47

Considering the government is stinging car owners badly over the next few years to make us all buy electric cars (which I couldn't afford) I'm hoping never because I can't afford to go into work pay my bills and eat

Before anyone says get a bus or cycle I DONT LIVE IN LONDON

PonyPatter44 · 16/01/2022 17:48

It will probably start to wind down when businesses realise how badly they are pissing off their customers with poor levels of service. Everyone i know who works from home reckons they're more productive - I see response times declining miserably, people being unable to cope with dialling into bloody Teams (you've been using it for TWO YEARS, Laura!!), everything taking ten times longer to get done, and hearing people's kids in the background of sensitive calls. Its poor, and companies need to get their collective acts together.

HollyBollyBooBoo · 16/01/2022 17:49

I can't imagine working life will ever go back to how in was.

A hybrid model will come in for most office based people. Offices won't go completely.

Ilikewinter · 16/01/2022 17:49

Im just about to start a job that is hybrid working so im guessing this the future for a lot of people

Roominmyhouse · 16/01/2022 17:50

It won’t end as such. Some people will stay WFH, some will be hybrid and some will go back to the office full time.

It’s about time this country moved on from presenteeism and people doing unnecessary daily commutes. People should be pleased there is going to be more options than just in the office 9-5 moving forward.

megletthesecond · 16/01/2022 17:50

Hopefully never completely. Hybrid working is much better.

MajorCarolDanvers · 16/01/2022 17:52

Do you mean the government restrictions.

England by end of January
Wales, Scotland, NI end of March

Are my guesses

But many employers will continue to enable wfh indefinitely/ permanently.

Personally I have a permanent wfh contract which I'm delighted with but we've retained off ice space for those who don't want to or can't wfh.

ImInStealthMode · 16/01/2022 17:52

It's ended for me unless it becomes mandatory again. I can work from home, but perched on a stool at my dressing table in my bedroom, with a laptop instead of the 2 screens I use in the office.

It's not productive, not good for my physical health and not good for my mental health. I won't do it again voluntarily.

Thankfully my employer have taken a stance of 'you can WFH if you feel more comfortable, but we'd rather you be here'. We have plenty of space in the office so distancing isn't a problem.

Teenagequeenwithaloadedgun · 16/01/2022 17:52

I hope it doesn't, hybrid working means I get to see my DC instead of spending 3 hours a day commuting.

I say to my team that they can work anywhere as long as they're available, attend calls and get their job done. Output over location.

CornishTiger · 16/01/2022 17:53

It’s here to stay for many sectors.

twominutesmore · 16/01/2022 17:54

BBC has just reported that the government directive to WFH will end at the next review, end of Jan.

RandomMess · 16/01/2022 17:58

We've moved to permanent hybrid. Not the offices have been prepared for that we are supposed to take everything in with us each working day - mug, coffee, milk, laptop, docking station, charger cable, lunch.

They encourage sustainable transport but if you cycle it's a nightmare with all the extra stuff to carry and no access to drawers for storage let alone a locker.

HardbackWriter · 16/01/2022 17:58

I think my employer is intending to put off any decision for as long as possible, because they're terrified of people kicking off about it if they say we have to come back in any way. Ironically, the longer they do this the more entrenched people get at home and the more kicking off there will be!

Nidan2Sandan · 16/01/2022 17:59

My company has gone hybrid and I imagine it'll stay for the foreseeable. Whether we go back to 5 days a week in an office, I dont know.

I would say, where my team is concerned, that we are spread across the country. So even working in the office means I wouldn't see my team members anyway. And my office is a small satellite one, so is usually fairly empty anyway.

I dont actually mind office working though, but wfh has made childcare much easier. My kids are older so leave me alone to work, but it means I can nip out to pick them up after school rather than having to pay for childcare.

Woffle · 16/01/2022 18:01

January 26th, apparently.

TheAverageForumUser · 16/01/2022 18:02

@megletthesecond

Hopefully never completely. Hybrid working is much better.
For you, maybe. Not everyone has a dedicated space at home, or suitable furniture, or peace and quiet.

I have WFH for many years. I don’t even have a desk at the company’s office. That’s fine for me. I live 150 miles away from it anyway. I have an office at home with the same set-up, or better, than people at the office. When the office closed in March 2020 not everyone was delighted to be working from home. Some who live in flat-shares or bedsits have nowhere to work from that is comfortable and suitable. They are desperate to get back to the office.

FangsForTheMemory · 16/01/2022 18:02

It won't. Nor is COVID likely to disappear at any point. HTH.

Blossom64265 · 16/01/2022 18:04

Considering how many businesses have given up the bulk of their office space, for many, the answer is never. Their employees already know this though.

thecatsthecats · 16/01/2022 18:04

I love WFH, but I need my husband to go back to the office before I kill or divorce him.

Overthebow · 16/01/2022 18:28

It’s ending 26th January. Some companies will stick with wfh but I imagine most companies will start expecting people to work at least a couple of days in the office each week and move to hybrid working.
