For those if you who have 20 days annual leave plus bank hols - is that enough for you or do you find yourself needing more?

No I was just shattered when holidays came along all I wanted to do was stay at home and rest.

Powaqa · 16/01/2022 16:34

I get 25 days a year plus bank holidays - which we no longer have to fix and can take any time. We also get our Birthday off plus half day Christmas Eve

It's still not enough - I buy an extra 10 days a year on top

Cantleave · 16/01/2022 16:40

When I worked for the Nhs I got 33 days holiday, plus 8 bank holidays (41 days). As I normally worked bank holidays it meant I had 8 weeks holidays plus 1 day. I would have really struggled with only 20 days! Annual leave is definitely one of the perks of working for the Nhs.

Gilly12345 · 16/01/2022 16:43

20 days holiday if you work a 5 day week is awful.

4 weeks a year when there are 52 weeks a year.

No wonder people go sick from work.

I have long service with my company and get almost 7 weeks a year.

Thefrenchconnection1 · 16/01/2022 16:43

I get 30 days plus bank hols plus I can take 2 Flexi days a month (but have to work the hours somewhere). 20 days is two weeks for a summer break and two half terms. It doesn't account for life with children. Saying that I suppose it depends on the salary. If it was 30k more you could afford all the help you would need like decorators etc

gamerchick · 16/01/2022 16:45

I get that and it's fine. I don't have littlies though and work outside school hours.

Onthegrid · 16/01/2022 16:46

No, it isn’t and in my opinion leads to a very unbalanced work/life balance.
I can just about manage on 25 days plus bank holidays i had pre covid but it took a lot of juggling and meant I only took time off to go on holiday, I have DC of uni age so no school breaks to cover.
I didn’t take odd days for downtime or medical appointments unless absolutely necessary as that just meant less time on holiday. We had to use 3-5 days over Christmas.
That meant I could have a 2 week holiday in the summer, and probably 1 other week and a long weekend.
That just doesn’t work for me now, at the moment I have extra days from when I worked 9 months without a break during covid. My role is not a key worker role, the company just out most staff on furlough and expected the few left to cover.
I have 40 days to take until April 2023. I will be asking for 30 minimum then even if I have to buy them.
The problem is our directors want everyone on a minimum contract so 20 days.

Isgooglebroken · 16/01/2022 16:47

No.

MissMinutes24 · 16/01/2022 16:50

I have 20 and it's been really difficult. Reading this thread I didn't realise people got so much more and now I feel stupid for not having tried to negotiate it before signing my contract. I guess there's nothing I can do about it now.

TheCatShatInTheHat · 16/01/2022 16:50

I currently have 17 days left of my 30 days (plus BH) entitlement - which I need to use by March 31st.

My kids have grown up and I now struggle to use them all up. I went away for 2 weeks last summer and in the last year have had several weekends away (7). I'm hoping I can carry 5 over to next year.

tokyo1 · 16/01/2022 16:52

No :( 4 weeks really isn't enough. Wish I had more.

SoftPillow · 16/01/2022 16:54

I get 23 and it's honestly one of the main reasons that I'd leave my job.

I've told my boss that I will need more this year, or to take unpaid leave, he's fine with this. If this flex ever stopped I'd likely leave

Thismummyrunstheshow · 16/01/2022 16:56

I have 28 and it's not enough. It's never been enough since having children unfortunately

Dazedandconfused10 · 16/01/2022 16:56

We have unlimited holiday and I never make the most of it. Should take more.

SliceOfCakeCupOfTea · 16/01/2022 16:57

Not a chance.

I get 30 plus bank holidays and Christmas leave and even then it's pushing it.

Ribosome · 16/01/2022 17:02

My colleagues in the US dream about 20 days holiday. They are lucky if they get 2 weeks

Ribosome · 16/01/2022 17:03

Having said that I agree that by U.K. standards 20 days is not good

Spoldge45 · 16/01/2022 17:05

No, its wayful when you have 13 weeks of school holidays to cover, but sadly unless you work for the NHS or local Council this is often the norm.

I work 3 days & get 14.4 days

Inanun2 · 16/01/2022 17:06

No, 20 is a struggle when you are used to more and have to cover illness and school holidays etc. I took a job with 22 days and it was a shock having been used to 28 days.
We used to plan the year between my DH and I to have a 2 family weeks altogether around a BH weeks so only using 4 days each week and the rest we took separately to cover childminder / schoolholidays etc.
My company brought in purchasing 5 days hol and it’s so much better with more hols.
Also, now DC older we do not have the same issues.
But sympathies to everyone as it is hard with low holiday entitlement and a young family.

crackersforcrackers · 16/01/2022 17:07

YANBU.

I get the 20+8 minimum allowance and struggle every year to not exceed it. (And we aren't allowed unpaid days or any other way to take extra days off).

Karenity · 16/01/2022 17:08

It is a problem when the kids are young but that's mostly because childcare is so expensive.

GingerAndTheBiscuits · 16/01/2022 17:10

20 wouldn’t be enough for me. I get more than that currently and plan my flexi days to account for insets etc. We just about cover the school holidays now between us as DH has a very generous holiday allowance in his current role. Leave would be a deal breaker for me in any future role, I’d want to at least match what I have now

NeverForgetYourDreams · 16/01/2022 17:11

My staff leave is 28 including BH. However I never count them and I don't care how many they take within reason

We also give extra leave over Xmas and new year and don't have to use holidays for medical appts they are extra.

I take 20 off a year as the owner. Sometimes less.

But I keep the staff happy and happy staff is a profitable business in my eyes

eagerlywaitingfor · 16/01/2022 17:12

I get 20 days (plus the usual bank hols), but my firm shuts down between Xmas and new year and that gets deducted our of the 20 days. Bit annoying, as we have no choice in the matter.

Used to get 27 days once upon a time when I worked for a bank.

jesusmaryjosephandtheweedonkey · 16/01/2022 17:13

After bank holidays and Christmas is taken out I have 20 days. I never take overtime payments but have it as Toil also get awarded random extra holidays throughout the year so it normally adds upto 5 weeks.
When my children were small I worked term time .
