BBC Licence fee to be abolished in 2027

Fucking Tories. Why do people vote for them? Why isn't there a viable opposition?

I would protest against this decision, but, oh, they've abolished that too.

OP posts:

have alienated millions of older people who don’t live in London.

Really? I expect the majority of their most loyal viewers live outside London.

x2boys · 16/01/2022 14:50

@IDontKnow00

Wasn't this inevitable. Simply because the younger generation don't watch live TV or buy TV licences. I'm in my 20's and less than half the people I know have TV licences. They all have Netflix, Disney + etc.

It was never sustainable. I don't believe for a second they're scrapping it because of old people getting knocks on their door. They're scrapping it because if they carry it on the funding will be less and less as the number of people buying license fees dies out.

It's an archaic way of doing things. I'm surprised it lasted this long.

So true my son is fifteen ,he has his own TV ,but never watches programs as far as I know ,we have Amazon prime and Netflix ,and obviously he watches you tube ,my DH is the same he mainly watches streamed stuff, the only TV I watch regularly is classic Corrie🤣.

@Svara

Ah okay.

Tealightsandd · 16/01/2022 14:52

The article I posted upthread describes the problem with the BBC (and other media outlets). But don't let that get in the way of your own lazy prejudices.

The lazy and reductive “London is cosmopolitan elite” narrative extends well beyond the far right. This shorthand gathers into one category people who have a second home in Provence, and outsourced gig economy workers who live in Hackney. By flattening such diversity into catch-all terms, we erase the existence of working class Londoners, ethnic minorities and migrants.

I mean, their permanent home. They will of course own a second home London 'bolthole'.
justanoldhack · 16/01/2022 14:57

@TameDucksAtChatsworth what are you upset about, exactly? If you reread my message you'll understand that the perspective was from the Tories, not me or the BBC?

Viviennemary · 16/01/2022 14:57

Good. Not before time.

LawnFever · 16/01/2022 14:57

@godmum56

It annoys me that you can't legally watch ANY TV channel without a licence although its only the beeb who gets the money
That’s not actually true that only the Beeb gets the money.

Part of the fee also contributes towards Freeview and Freesat, and towards the UK broadband rollout, funding local TV channels and S4C, the Welsh language TV channel, as agreed with the government as part of the 2010 licence fee settlement.

@lonelyapple

Brilliant news if true! Couldn't be more pleased.
Sadly it isn’t true… OP getting excited over nothing!
Mummyoflittledragon · 16/01/2022 15:00

@AlexaShutUp

I'm really gutted about this. The BBC is trusted and respected around the world and is part of the UK's "soft power". Personally, I'd happily pay the licence fee to sustain radio 4 alone. Instead, we'll end up with a bunch of commercial crap on all of the channels.

Fucking tories.

I agree with comments like this. The tories have systematically destroyed the respect other countries had for us and out standing in the world. Margaret thatcher closing industry when France, Italy, Germany etc propped up industries including the car industry. Then brexshit. Now this.
megletthesecond · 16/01/2022 15:02

How will it be paid for?
I don't want ITV rubbish on every channel.

lucillelarusso · 16/01/2022 15:04

Brilliant news, I am delighted. Since Jimmy Savile I have wanted the fee to go, they are an utter disgrace and I do not want to fund them.

It's not going (yet), please read the articles.

I would be delighted too but unfortunately it’s not happening.
Tara336 · 16/01/2022 15:08

Good! Making people pay for a licence is so outdated, I barely watch anything on BBC and wouldn’t miss it at all the programs the last few years have been really poor. Also not crazy about the way they behaved when Exh and I sold our house when we divorced, his new home was ready to move in too so he acquired a licence in his name, I had to wait to complete on mine and was given the 3rd degree as to why I didn’t need the licence, where was I living etc told them it was not their business and put the phone down

HelloFrostyMorning · 16/01/2022 15:08

NOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO!

Really?! That's amazing news if it's true! Smile

FindmeuptheFarawaytree · 16/01/2022 15:11

Clearly part of the 'save Boris' distraction plan to release this information today, why do people keep falling for them? Sorry Boris (or 'Big Dogs if you prefer), I haven't forgotten that you are a lying, partying idiot who thinks he is above the law just because you've said I may save around £120 a year!

Silvershroud · 16/01/2022 15:11

@knark

Perhaps a subscription service for BBC is needed for people who feel the same as you. But I suspect what you really want is for everyone else to pay for a service for your benefit, whether they use/like it or not.

No, I believe that life is better when people pull together and combine their strengths. So a few of us could pay for radio 4 and a few of us could pay for radio 5, but if we are all paying in to the same broadcaster we get more for our money. There is no need for everything to be commercial and competitive and a zero sum gain.

I agree with you 100% OP. But the scrapping of the BBC is just one of the consequences of having a populist government - every policy is just an appeal to mass prejudice. We should just be thanful that the NHS still has public support (for now) or that would be sold off too. Most people don't think about the consequences- which is why we have a Brexit government, of course.

It’s really not, OP got a bit giddy
Mumofsend · 16/01/2022 15:18

Good, its a ridiculous model. I haven't needed a license in years.

the80sweregreat · 16/01/2022 15:20

Of course this and the Harry and Meghan story in the DM and the fact that Kier Starmer is being looked into for breaking the rules last year etc is all to do with saving Boris Johnson's bacon , 'operation big dog. '
Seems it's working judging by the reaction to this story on here.

HelloFrostyMorning · 16/01/2022 15:20

@LawnFever I have googled it and a few sources say it's true, but it's not featured on many sites.

What's the truth? If i's fake news, where did it come from?

HelloFrostyMorning · 16/01/2022 15:20
  • it's
LuckyMeISeeGhosts · 16/01/2022 15:25
