BBC Licence fee to be abolished in 2027

Fucking Tories. Why do people vote for them? Why isn't there a viable opposition?

I would protest against this decision, but, oh, they've abolished that too.

OP posts:
Woffle · 16/01/2022 14:22

The licence fee is not being abolished!

RedRosie · 16/01/2022 14:24

I'm proud of it. There's good and bad, it's accused of bias in all possible directions (so probably getting it about right) and people have no idea the breadth and depth of what the licence fee funds. Not just TV and radio. For the BBC lovers (the haters won't bother) here's a great song from Mitch Benn.

We will get what we deserve. And I for one will be very sorry indeed.

BurntToastAgain · 16/01/2022 14:25

Personally I’d go out of my way to avoid cbeebies.

But it’s not about what people like watching. It’s about a ridiculously out of date funding model, which should be overhauled.

The ‘nothing live’ edict is ridiculous. Utterly ridiculous. People should be able to watch a youtube live stream something without a license fee.

As is the assumption that you should have a license so you have to keep telling them that you don’t need one.

Why do people think that the actual license fee system (rather than the bbc) should be untouchable?

Tealightsandd · 16/01/2022 14:25

This is a good article that explains the way in which the media - including the BBC - misrepresent the reality.

This is particularly striking in the presentation of London as being a Remain stronghold inhabited by metropolitan elites.

In fact, the reality is that working class communities, especially in cities, have been just as “left behind” as those elsewhere in the UK. Even 72 people dying in the Grenfell Tower tragedy, a preventable fire which happened within sight of Parliament, hasn’t dislodged the dominant narrative of London as a leafy cosmopolitan elite bubble.

citymonitor.ai/government/why-aren-t-working-class-people-living-cities-also-left-behind-4694

The BBC (and other big media outlets) fail to look outstde of their own narrow bubble. They move to London (and now Manchester) and think that everyone there lives the same privileged life that they do.

BurntToastAgain · 16/01/2022 14:26

@ItsAlwaysThere

I find that people who complain the most about the licence fee don't listen to bbc radio. That's where the quality programming really is.

However, I've always felt uneasy about the strict requirement to pay. I'm not sure what the solution is, we don't want adverts all over the BBC that is the point.

There are adverts all over the bbc. It’s just they’re all for the bbc and it’s content. There are loads of them.
Chloemol · 16/01/2022 14:27

For all those saying they don’t mind paying the fee, great it can become a subscription channel like others
Then you can pay

Guineapigssweak · 16/01/2022 14:27

Haven't paid it for a few years now and don't miss anything to do with the BBC.

WinnersDinner · 16/01/2022 14:28

It won't happen

They've put that date as it's after the next general election

JackieWeaverHandforthCouncil · 16/01/2022 14:28

‘While I do find the London focus, wokeness and left-wing bias irritating’

What London focus? Also what wokeness and left wing bias? Farage has been on the BBC so much that I’m still surprised I haven’t yet seen him read the bedtime story on CBeebies. He probably did and I missed it. He must have his own office/bed there to save him time when he’s due to make his regular appearance.

Also in the run up to the referendum the ‘Migrant Crisis’ was all the BBC talked about. I’m certain they influenced votes. A few of their top presenters have links to the Tory party, were Young Conservatives or went to school with members of the cabinet. John Humphrey’s, Andrew Neil, Nick Robinson, Laura Kuenessberg - ‘left/wing’ and ‘woke’? My arse.

DdraigGoch · 16/01/2022 14:34

And yet senior management and the editorial team on important programmes like Newsnight were ministers under Blair/Brown.

@WinnersDinner

I know, this is what happens when people just go off an inaccurate OP rather than going to read the actual news article!

The licence fee is not being cancelled!!

PlanetNormal · 16/01/2022 14:39

The BBC still does a good job in some ways and I would happily pay my license fee for R4 & TMS on their own, but the organisation only has itself to blame for the mess in which it now finds itself.

Its obsession with diversity box-ticking and preaching divisive ‘woke’ nonsense together with its blatantly one-sided and biased coverage of climate issues have alienated millions of older people who don’t live in London. The uncritical cheerleading for the Marxist BLM organisation was the last straw for many. It’s no wonder they now support defunding the BBC.

Ikona · 16/01/2022 14:39

I wish they would cancel it, we didn't watch any live TV for a while, then had to pay for a TV licence when we opted for a new package with plenty of channels we like. We both listen to the radio and watch TV regularly, and in the past few years we've neither watched nor listened to a BBC channel/station once. It is annoying when you have to pay for the licence to watch other channels.

ParsleySageRosemary · 16/01/2022 14:40

The licence fee is being frozen as it is for the next 2 years, and they have announced the abolition of licence fee in 2027.

Nailsbythesea · 16/01/2022 14:42

Can't fucking wait.

They pay and waste MY money on serious crap and expenses and lining their own pockets and how dare they CHARGE to watch programme on Britbox that I paid for -disgusting. I don't get a choice on a TV license or not. Wish it was 1st Feb this year and not 2027!

Very very outdated model.

Nailsbythesea · 16/01/2022 14:43

Oh and seriously the no advert thing -they advertise their own crap endlessly during programmes I want to watch

pigsDOfly · 16/01/2022 14:43

I pay for all the television I watch on Sky and Netflix in a fairly hefty monthly subscription in the same way I pay for BBC television and radio with my licence fee.

Are people who want the tv licence fee abolished expecting to watch BBC television or listen to BBC radio for nothing, or do they never watch BBC tv or listen to BBC national radio their local BBC radio station?

If they don't use the service then they don't have to pay surely.

IDontKnow00 · 16/01/2022 14:44

Wasn't this inevitable. Simply because the younger generation don't watch live TV or buy TV licences. I'm in my 20's and less than half the people I know have TV licences. They all have Netflix, Disney + etc.

It was never sustainable. I don't believe for a second they're scrapping it because of old people getting knocks on their door. They're scrapping it because if they carry it on the funding will be less and less as the number of people buying license fees dies out.

It's an archaic way of doing things. I'm surprised it lasted this long.

lonelyapple · 16/01/2022 14:45

Brilliant news if true! Couldn't be more pleased.

There isn’t enough advertising revenue in the uk for the solution to be ‘just put adverts on’ anyway.

I know that’s not what you’re suggesting but it gets banded around loads and it’s not a workable solution for funding the BBC.

Svara · 16/01/2022 14:46

No, you can not watch or listen to any BBC channels or radio stations but still have to pay if you watch other live TV.

No they haven't. Please read the articles.

www.bbc.co.uk/news/entertainment-arts-60014514

A government source confirmed the BBC discussions over the licence fee were ongoing.

The licence fees existence has been guaranteed until 2027. What happens after that is anyone's guess and will depend on the governments between now and then.

Starlightstarbright1 · 16/01/2022 14:48

Literally the only thing i can think i have watched in the last 6 months is the Apprentice

lonelyapple · 16/01/2022 14:48

@knark

The BBC produces consistently high quality tv and radio broadcasting, despite having their funding cut and cut again. They have journalistic freedom, free from commercial demands or editorial ownership of a single man.

I'm sick of capitalism and commercialism and consumerism. This government relies on soundbites and division and has no shame in legislating against those who would hold it to account.

...in your opinion.

OP they'll probably offer a subscription service and you can pay a premium service for it as you obviously think the BBC are worth paying for. I don't know why you think other people should continue to subsidise your choice to watch BBC though!

LawnFever · 16/01/2022 14:49

@Nailsbythesea

So watch on iplayer and miss them out, I can’t remember the last time I actually sat and watched adverts of any kind on any channel.
