BBC Licence fee to be abolished in 2027

Fucking Tories. Why do people vote for them? Why isn't there a viable opposition?

I would protest against this decision, but, oh, they've abolished that too.

OP posts:
j712adrian · 17/01/2022 23:41

Anyway, whatever. The Government say it’s going on beyond 2027.

Why should us British allow ourselves to taken over and in debt to American and oligarch media?

ShellInner · 17/01/2022 23:43

My OH works for the Beeb. He's excellent in his field, he works long shifts, weekends and unsocial hours for not a great salary. Behind the "big names" are dedicated teams who have been working with this hanging over their heads for years. The Tories want to flog it off to the ruthless media moguls who they are so scared of. It's normal people's careers and livelihoods at stake. It's not a lot of money to pay for the vast content on offer, you can pick and choose depending on your interests. iPlayer, the website and radio are excellent. You need cash to provide content - either commissioning series, that in turn leads to supporting more jobs - from production to extras work or for securing rights, so people can watch their favourite sport or festival. It doesn't all magically appear. It's a complete bargain and once it's gone, it's gone ....I really wish people would open their eyes, as this is yet another smokescreen

LondonQueen · 17/01/2022 23:44

I didn't renew mine this year. I don't watch live TV anyways but do watch BBC iPlayer.

LondonQueen · 17/01/2022 23:46

Also why is it a bad thing that they're cancelling the fee? Every other channel doesn't require one...

AllThePogs · 17/01/2022 23:47

You need a licence to watch BBC iplayer.

j712adrian · 17/01/2022 23:53

The BBC is 50p a day.

Sky is loads more. And it’s crap. And not British.

Runnerduck34 · 17/01/2022 23:56

I'm going to sound like a dinosaur but I love the BBC, it generally does a great job and I'm concerned for its future.
I'm happy to pay the licence fee, much cheaper than sky , can't remember what I pay for Netflix but think it's similar to that.
The service they offer is unique and should be valued.
Brilliant children's TV, bitesize for education etc, often use bbc good food recipes, great radio stations, fantastic drama( recently the tourist, and around the world in 80 days) provide local and international news, and imo always do best coverage on national events , elections etc.
No adverts! No other broadcaster comes close to their range and standard.
Why do we have to bash a great British institution.

j712adrian · 17/01/2022 23:58

Last word from me is that if the folks who want to be angry about not having the licence fee cancelled - they should take it up with the Express and Mail who ran the story and didn’t check it - or the Government who have decided not to do it.

AllThePogs · 17/01/2022 23:59

Netflix is more expensive.

dontsaythj · 18/01/2022 00:15

@ShellInner

I do feel sorry for you husband's situation. But the BBC dug its own grave.

They ceaselessly attempt to promote a left-wing woke agenda. They alienated too many people.

melj1213 · 18/01/2022 00:18

@j712adrian

The BBC is 50p a day.

Sky is loads more. And it’s crap. And not British.

And Netflix and Disney+ are 20p each a day.

I don't have a TV licence, I watch ITV, Channel 4 and Channel 5 shows via their streaming platforms through my chrome cast, along with YouTube and I pay for Netflix and Disney+ at £5.99 a month each. Occasionally if there is a good deal on NOWTV (I get periodic emails offering their Entertainment package for £2.99 for a month) or Amazon offer me a Prime trial (Every so often they offer a free 30 day prime trial or a month for 99p) then I will subscribe to them for the odd month here and there to binge watch certain series/box sets that are only available on Sky/Prime and then unsubscribe until the next time they offer a cheap deal.

So every month my "standard" entertainment costs me 40p a day and even in the months where I am paying for Netflix, Disney+, Amazon and NOWTV it costs me 53p a day and provides me with a massively larger catalogue of entertainment than the BBC does for practically the same price.

AllThePogs · 18/01/2022 00:20

So who would commission those BBC shows you watch on Netflix if the BBC did not exist? Not Netflix.

melj1213 · 18/01/2022 00:30

@AllThePogs

So who would commission those BBC shows you watch on Netflix if the BBC did not exist? Not Netflix.
Nobody is saying the BBC will cease to exist, and nor should it, but people should not be forced to fund it in order to access other broadcasters. I would happily pay for BBC content if I use it, but I don't. If I want to watch Coronation Street on ITV when it airs, why do I have to pay the BBC for the privilege?

If I go shopping, I don't have to pay Tesco in order to be allowed into Asda; if I listen to music on Spotify I don't have to pay YouTube to be allowed access so why does the BBC still get to demand a ransom if I want to watch one of the hundreds of other channels available just because I watch a "live" broadcast.

A lot of the BBC stuff on Netflix will still be there as the production companies will just sell it to different broadcasters. A lot of shows commissioned by the BBC are also funded and optioned by other TV distributors so its not like they will cease to exist, and if they did then they clearly weren't competitive enough to make it on the open market.

AllThePogs · 18/01/2022 00:34

But that is the point. Media should not only be about what is competitive.

melj1213 · 18/01/2022 00:43

Why should media not be competitive? Broadcasters are no different to any other target driven market - if people aren't watching then it's a waste of money.

In this day and age, when there are so many different services available, shows are only picked up if they are going to be watched... why would any company pay for something to be commissioned if they knew it wasn't going to get them viewing figures and profits?

Theluggage15 · 18/01/2022 00:45

I know lots of young people thanks, @j712adrian they watch Netflix, YouTube and other streaming services, barely any BBC. The figures are out there. Young people are switching off. The average age of Radio One listeners is 32. Have you heard of Spotify?

Left wing agenda ... when BBC news pussyfoot around the Tories but it's ok for Ant + Dec to call out the PM's behaviour on prime time ITV? (spectacular alternative audience reach there, played a blinder IMHO) As for woke... well, if that's what it's called to be aware of cultural and political issues and caring about other human beings, sign me up for it right this minute.
I also didn't say "husband", I'm far too "woke" for traditional labels....

nalabae · 18/01/2022 00:52

Who even pays that besides my dad

Lightswitch123 · 18/01/2022 00:56

Great news.

The BBC lost the run of itself. I resent having woke stuffed down my neck every 2 minutes by people paid by the taxpayer and earning an eye-watering amount - way more than doctors civil servants etc

Good riddance

Except nothing is happening to shit the BBC down. The Government have said they aren’t doing it.

The reports from the Mail and Express were wrong. Simple as.

j712adrian · 18/01/2022 01:00

*shut

Except it’s not closing.

The government declined to do it. The Express and Mail reports were wrong.

Fine, except it’s not closing.

The government declined to close the BBC down. The Express and Mail reports were wrong. Unhappy? Take it up with them.

screwthem · 18/01/2022 07:34

Unpatriotic to not want to pay money for propaganda and shit content. I've heard it all.

Enko · 18/01/2022 07:46

We deregistered from licence in July and honestly I do not miss it. I think tv licensing is outdated and I do not think BBC brings out significantly better stuff than other broadcasting services.
