BBC Licence fee to be abolished in 2027

Fucking Tories. Why do people vote for them? Why isn't there a viable opposition?

I would protest against this decision, but, oh, they've abolished that too.

This was news to me, good news, so thanks for that.

Although apparently they are going to replace it with something else, so as someone with a higher than average income, I may end up worse off.

ZenNudist · 16/01/2022 12:35

There is no need for a state broadcaster in todays world. Dh and I seriously considered deregistering from the licence fee but I watch the occasional live Facebook of church service and apparently that is covered by the licence fee (cheekily, nothing to do with BBC).

I can't justify the cost for one channel. No other broadcaster gets to tax the public.

I do like some BBC drama right now but we've had years and years of not using it at all and that's at least £1,000 down the drain.

user1493494961 · 16/01/2022 12:35

Can't wait!

Svara · 16/01/2022 12:38

Can't vote as you haven't really stated your opinion. It would be great if it was sooner.

Xfox · 16/01/2022 12:38

Well it's an outdated funding model. Though I'll not hold my breath what it is replaced with will be any better.

BBC have produced some excellent programs, but I cancelled my license a few years ago as I couldn't justify the costs for little I have missed.

IncompleteSenten · 16/01/2022 12:39

Good!

Those people who think it's great can choose to pay for it and those of us who don't, can continue to have other subscriptions without being forced to pay for something we are happy to not use.

It's well overdue imo.

knark · 16/01/2022 12:39

The BBC produces consistently high quality tv and radio broadcasting, despite having their funding cut and cut again. They have journalistic freedom, free from commercial demands or editorial ownership of a single man.

I'm sick of capitalism and commercialism and consumerism. This government relies on soundbites and division and has no shame in legislating against those who would hold it to account.

There is a perfectly viable opposition, which most people voted for.
RedCandyApple · 16/01/2022 12:40

GOOD!

sst1234 · 16/01/2022 12:41

BBC is a symbol of Britain’s soft power. An invaluable asset in that’s sense. But in the last two decades or so, it has become increasingly partisan and left wing and quality of programming is shockingly bad. It turned itself into a dinosaur. A valuable lesson that public sector organizations fail to learn, time and time again.

CuriousaboutSamphire · 16/01/2022 12:42

Ah well. Maybe someone will have the decency to say it out loud - be careful what you wish for - and we will now get the television we deserve.

Doesn't really bear thinking about.

knark · 16/01/2022 12:42

I'm sorry I didn't make it clear Smile

High quality what now?

I beg to differ.

But if most people agree with you there will be no problem because they'll be happy to subscribe and the BBC can carry on making its top quality content.

Well those who like it can pay for it surely? It's unfair that people have to pay for the BBC when they don't use it just because they watch other free to air TV or none at all but are just too afraid to cancel.

Perhaps a subscription service for BBC is needed for people who feel the same as you. But I suspect what you really want is for everyone else to pay for a service for your benefit, whether they use/like it or not.
DdraigGoch · 16/01/2022 12:44

Excellent news. Now perhaps they can stop pestering me - I don't have to tell Sky that I don't need to pay for its services, I just don't use them. Why should I have to tell the BBC?

Whenever I go into the messroom at work and the TV is on, I am reminded of how little I'm missing.

The BBC's behaviour over Savile and various other issues has changed my view of it. They aren't accountable and they haven't made much use of their "journalistic freedom" most of their "news" stories are about celebs and other nonsense. The licence has outlived it's time and the BBC has overstepped into areas it should never have ventured into - it's full of talent shows and cooking programmes with very little quality content. They need to modernise. I'll be happy to subscribe - hopefully I can choose to pay for actual news and not dancing shows or sport.
knark · 16/01/2022 12:44

I am not claiming it's perfect, and it's not even what it once was, but I don't think that the solution is to scrap it.

we will now get the television we deserve.

I'm afraid so.

I think the BBC should do a one day blackout of all its content including the website, radio, CBeebies, world service, tv, stuff in schools etc, iplayer.

Obviously some wouldn’t care but a lot of people would sit up and notice. People rarely think about how much stuff they actually make.

Thelnebriati · 16/01/2022 12:46

Taxes should be proportional to income, so I won't hold my breath but hope they introduce a fairer system.

BowerOfBramble · 16/01/2022 12:46

@Ionlydomassiveones

Are the Director General? Your post certainly sums up the attitude of the ‘neutral’ BBC and why people now resent the licence fee. I will mourn the loss of the BBC but their blanket biased coverage of Brexit, overblown salaries to dummies like Tess Daly and Gary Linekar and London-centric wokeness which is so out of step of the rest of the country has done them no favours.
Don’t know if you’re familiar with Tim thingy but he’s a massive massive Tory so unlikely the OP is him

That would be lovely. Can it be on a workday so I don't have to listen to Radio 2 all day?
AlexaShutUp · 16/01/2022 12:47

I'm really gutted about this. The BBC is trusted and respected around the world and is part of the UK's "soft power". Personally, I'd happily pay the licence fee to sustain radio 4 alone. Instead, we'll end up with a bunch of commercial crap on all of the channels.

Fucking tories.

CuriousaboutSamphire · 16/01/2022 12:47

Sorry, I lost a sentence...

It isn't hapening, it might happen. 2027 is the bext review of the license.

And it relies on everyone having superfast broadband. And the current situation is all lies. The % coverage is not as it has been published - I know as I live in an area that has Fastershire, but can't actually stream consistently if all my neighbours are doiing so too. And I live in a small market town. Where I used to live there would be no chance at all - even though there is officially a Fastershire link there too.

Anyone who lives rurally knows this to be a lie. We have Fastershire boxes at the end of our roads, but the cabling to our homes is not capable, nor will it be upgraded unless we pay for it, individually, that isn't part of the Fastershire contract.

For some of us traditional telly is the only reliable connection we have.
