To Wonder What My Neighbour Does For A Living?

Dazedandconfused170 · 16/01/2022 10:05

So I’m just being completely nosey/curious here..

My neighbour is in his 60s I’d say & seems to work Mon-Fri with early starts and every day he comes home with a different car so I’m assuming that’s part of his job. So I’m just wondering what job would you need to have a car for to take home overnight and then have a different one the next day?

I assumed at first he was delivering hire cars to people but why would he need to keep it over night?
The cars aren’t brand new looking at the reg plates but they’re always clean/new looking. They’re all different brands and sometimes he’ll have a van

Any thoughts?

Of course you're just being nosy.

Are you a bit bored and mentally untaxed? What's your job?

It's all the same car, it's just really good at disguises Grin

Used car dealer? There’s a guy on my road who sometimes has half a dozen cars on the go because he’s selling them.

WonderWomansBoobs · 16/01/2022 10:12

My brother does this. He delivers used cars up and down the country. Is there a red numberplate on them (might be in the window) it's his insurance plate.

FictionalCharacter · 16/01/2022 10:13

Delivering cars for a used car dealer.

NoVaxDjokovic · 16/01/2022 10:13

Hire car / courtesy car / company car delivery.

By bringing the car home at night, it means he gets an earlier start the next morning.

Ah yes that makes sense as he does have very early starts!

(FWIW- I used to work with a colleague whose dad was a detective in the police and he used to pick the colleague up in a variety of cars. )

That would be exciting if so, he is very low-key Grin

Delivering customers cars. Take the new one to the customer, collect old one, the older one cannot be returned to the hire company for whatever reason today, so it stays with the driver overnight. I would assume he works for contract car company, it’s quite an exciting little job , having done it for a few years, you never know what client is going to return, have driven many very high end vehicles, belonging to the stars.

ShadowPuppets · 16/01/2022 10:22

My MOT guy is a mobile guy, he drives to your house in one car, picks up your car, leaves the first car on your drive, takes it for the MOT, does any fixes needed, drives it back to you and takes the first car on to the next place. A couple of times he’s picked up my car last thing at night so that he can take it for the first slot the next day, so I’m guessing my car has stayed at his overnight. It’s really convenient as we’re quite rural so no public transport back from most of the test centres, and it saves you having to hang around. So maybe that?

Pinkstegosaurus · 16/01/2022 10:25

MOT man would be my suggestion to, we used to do this with our mechanic as we lived very locally to him.

WinnersDinner · 16/01/2022 10:26

Why not look him up on Facebook or LinkedIn?

He might work for a car dealership, either delivering cars as they do sometimes need them overnight

Or his work car gets used for a courtesy car so often takes something else, my BIL does this and often has a new car every day, as his work car is the largest one they have, so unfortunately if someone has a car in for repair and they have a larger family or need a bigger car than the courtesy stock in the dealership he has to give them his car and take a smaller one home for the day.

MilkshakesForAll · 16/01/2022 10:26

Oh i always wonder about my neighbours. And I guess they wonder about us. neither of us seem to have an obvious job, we have Dcs in a private school and our lights are on all night. (I work with our US office but from home so I start my 'day' about 8 pm when the Dcs have gone to bed and go until 3 am. ).

I'd say car salesman, spy or hire company rep.

Ponoka7 · 16/01/2022 10:28

He's a car delivery driver for used cars. Go on auto trader and the dealers offer UK delivery. You generally get paid a daily rate and get the train home. I know a few older people who do it. They like older people who have long, clean driving licenses.

Ilovetommycat · 16/01/2022 10:33

Why do people post on threads just to be rude? Just scroll on by if you aren't interested.
I know that my neighbour desperately tries to find out why I don't go out to work. She is lovely but steers conversation to working etc.
Truth is my dh is older than me but looks young for his age and has a good pension. I was also lucky to be able to take early retirement. I suspect she thinks we are on benefits Grin

Nocutenamesleft · 16/01/2022 10:35

My dad used to deliver hire cars for people who had one on their insurance. For crashes etc

He also drove cars for a top hotel. So spent every day driving ferraris and Lamborghinis and Maclarens.
