To Wonder What My Neighbour Does For A Living?

53 replies

Dazedandconfused170 · 16/01/2022 10:05

So I’m just being completely nosey/curious here..

My neighbour is in his 60s I’d say & seems to work Mon-Fri with early starts and every day he comes home with a different car so I’m assuming that’s part of his job. So I’m just wondering what job would you need to have a car for to take home overnight and then have a different one the next day?

I assumed at first he was delivering hire cars to people but why would he need to keep it over night?
The cars aren’t brand new looking at the reg plates but they’re always clean/new looking. They’re all different brands and sometimes he’ll have a van

Any thoughts?

@MrsMoastyToasty

Undercover policeman. (FWIW- I used to work with a colleague whose dad was a detective in the police and he used to pick the colleague up in a variety of cars. )
My father did that for his career. The car delivery was after he retired

Hence why he got the job for the hotel and was allowed to drive all the top cars because he had a A1 license?!?

Anyway. He had some phenomenal cars in the police. We’re always incredibly fast. I loved it as a child!

GingerFoxInAT0phat · 16/01/2022 10:41

You might be my dads neighbour Grin

He picks up and delivers newly bought cars, hire cars, ex mobility cars etc. Some days he’ll pick up a car, deliver it to a house then trek across the city to a showroom to pick up another one. This could be getting delivered 200 miles away so he’ll take it home. He sets off really early in the morning to get a head start on traffic.

Bigoldhag · 16/01/2022 10:44

Family member owns a chain of garages here and has a new car every day or so, probably something like that.

Trade plate driver? Delivers the vehicle that day then picks new one up before coming home. In the morning he's straight on the road without having to go to base first

MintJulia · 16/01/2022 10:55

Cars are less likely to be stolen/vandalised if they aren't in a works yard every night, so I imagine something in the motor trade.

@CarlatheJackal

Of course you're just being nosy.

Are you a bit bored and mentally untaxed? What's your job?

@CarlatheJackal

Given that the OP actually said
So I’m just being completely nosey/curious here
then I don't think your comment is particularly relevant.

Unless your are so mentally taxed you didn't bother to read the OP properly

Car mechanic/valeter.
An ex boyfriend of mine owned a garage & constantly used customer cars. Yes, he was a cheeky fucker.

Moretodo · 16/01/2022 11:03

I think you should follow him.
(lunatic)
And come back here to report on your findings.

Good lord, get a life. Or a grip.

Or chat to your neighbour and get to know him, rather than post on a public message board about him.

Toasterandjam · 16/01/2022 11:19

Inspector Gadget.

Toasterandjam · 16/01/2022 11:20

Actually its probably Mr Benn.

liveforsummer · 16/01/2022 11:21

Hitman? But more realistically due to the hours a second hand car salesman

DoubleYouOhEmAyEn · 16/01/2022 11:24

He'd need a different outfit as well Toaster Grin

@GingerFoxInAT0phat legit question: how does he get back home if he’s 200 miles away? Is there another car at the destination for him to drive back home or does he take the train?
TimBoothseyes · 16/01/2022 11:51

I used to work in community support. Depending on which car was available and what time my first visit was, I would often bring different cars home.

whatdoidonowffs · 16/01/2022 11:56

I’m guessing he works for we buy any car
They have delivery drivers picking cars up and taking to BCA auctions all over the place

MaryAndGerryLivingInDerry · 16/01/2022 11:58

My friends dad owns a second hand car dealership. He doesn’t actually have a car of his own, he just takes whatever car is handiest when he is heading home for the evening and takes it back in the morning.

FunkyPhantom · 16/01/2022 12:11

The OP needs to keep an eye out for the shopkeeper 😆

I'd suggest international car thief, nicking to order 😆👍

Matbest · 16/01/2022 12:14

That she’s curious doesn’t mean she doesn’t have a life, or a ‘grip’.

As for chatting to neighbour vs posting on a public message board - you can do both :)

PhilCornwall1 · 16/01/2022 12:24

Car Delivery Driver.

I have company cars and when my new one is delivered, it's driven down by a delivery driver and they then take my old one away. Old one is never more than 3 years old, so is in good nick and fully valeted for pick up.

Last chap that did it was in his 60s and retired from his original career, but did this, as he loved driving.

Must admit, it's a job I could do, as I love driving.

GingerFoxInAT0phat · 16/01/2022 13:33

@JingsMahBucket

So he lives in Yorkshire, he’ll have a car from the following day on his drive that might need taking to Edinburgh. He’ll set off at 3-4am, take it to a customer. Sometimes they will have a car to swap so he can take it somewhere straight away. Other times he might have to walk/bus/train to another part of Edinburgh to pick another car up. This could be going to London so he will take it home that day and set off the next morning. Get to London the next morning and the same again, dropping off, travelling to a car dealership.

If they do get stuck somewhere and there isn’t another car to pick up to take home he can get a train and will be reimbursed. There’s also a group chat of other drivers and they will try and help each other out if they get stuck.

My brother is similar. Police inspector, they get retirement early 50s. Very common for airport/ private companies like golf clubs/ hotels to employ ex-police/ MOD as they have A1 driving record/ security. My brother was a driver for COP for all the heads of state/ prime ministers/ presidents and works in the airport when he fancies it bringing fancy cars home lots.
