I now remember why I've never used this fucking thing handcrafted piece of art it's lovely to look at but it's taunting me.

The stupid knob has fallen off and I can't slide anything into the sides, I've shaken it upside down and that hasn't worked but MN I will get this draw open!

It's sat in my bedroom taunting me and I can't have that! So help me.

So AIBU that I will beat this thing and get it open?

@Elieza

Can you use a bit of stout wire?

Bend into a w shape with the middle top point of the w much longer as it’s the ‘handle’.

The two side bits should be wider than the hole so they have to be squeezed fully through the whole hole and will pop out inside the drawer out of sight while you’re holding onto the ‘handle’

The prongs should splay out and hopefully nudge the drawer out when you pull the handle.

If it doesn’t work it should just pull out again.

It's so tight no wire can get down the side. But thank you that's actually a good idea, I'll save that for when a kitchen drawer jams.

Heavy duty tape , think it's called Gorilla tape, made into a really sturdy handle? Might leave some residue though..

MalfunctioningRobot · 14/01/2022 22:49

Sex lube and a fish slice.

It's too tight even for that 😉

stairgates · 14/01/2022 22:54

Can you unscrew the handle off the other drawer and use it on that one, probably already been said but haven't read through

spotcheck · 14/01/2022 22:56

Definitely a screw, screwed in part way. Pull, and bobs yer uncle

Theunamedcat · 14/01/2022 22:56

I used a knitting needle no idea how I just put it in angled it and pulled enough to get my fingers in

A screw would have been easier 🙄 I didn't think of that

TrainspottingWelsh · 14/01/2022 22:56

How much do you care about damaging it? Put screws in the side ends of the drawer and use them to lever it out.
Could it be damp at all? If so let it thoroughly dry out and try again.

Sickoffamilydrama · 14/01/2022 22:57

Sledgehammer!
Tempting.... Which reminds me of when my DM was so annoyed with the piece of the oven rack falling off she stamped on it and punctured her foot 🤦‍♀️

Chester draws/ drawers always makes me laugh as English is my second language and the first couple of times I saw it, I naively assumed it was something akin to a Welsh dresser- aka describing something specific Grin. I kept trying to figure out what's special about them.

MaryAndGerryLivingInDerry · 14/01/2022 23:00

Do you still have the knob? Superglue it back on- leave it an hour and then try and pull it open.

ImustLearn2Cook · 14/01/2022 23:01

Isn’t there a hole where the knob was screwed in? The stout wire suggestion by Elieza, was about poking it through the hole where the knob was screwed in not trying to poke the wire through the sides of the drawer.

Sickoffamilydrama · 14/01/2022 23:03

I'll try a screw in the morning DH will be excited
For now I'll carry on watching Van Helsing on Netflix were they write draw and to in the wrong context with impunity because it's the vampires apocalypse and vampire's grammar sucks 😉

S0upertrooper · 15/01/2022 01:04

OP do you have a garage, shed or cool conservatory? If so put your DRAWER unit out there and the wood should shrink enough to let you open the DRAWER. Are you a Geordie, do you also say MIRRO instead of MIRROR?

Sickoffamilydrama · 15/01/2022 07:28

Nope my phone thinks it's a single vampire and decided to change it on me 🙄 can't exactly have an apocalypse with one vampire can we?

No I actually have a fairly refined southern accent that has pleasantly called stuck up bitch

Dyslexia is not related to where you are from (although accents don't help to phonetically break down words or spell them)

It's not related to your education level either.

Over the years, I survived by memorising words not consciously but through repetition of use, although I still often get their spelling wrong but I do understand the meaning of hundreds and hundreds — maybe a few thousand — words (this is my strength I function in the very top percentile here).

However I've never been able to sound out unfamiliar words and no matter how much I practice I still can't. People saying them to me or spelling them out doesn't help either as my auditory processing is in the bottom 10% of the population.

Thanks for the cold idea I'll try that if I can't get it open putting a screw through and report back.

If I don't correct your spelling, can I have half of whatever's in there?

Yes although I suspect it might be one of the kids teeth I seem to recall shoving one in there so they didn't see it!

Still I could save it for the harvesting of stem cells so one of them gets to live forever when science is able to get to that level?

I did find the cross my DNan bought me that I'd been worried I'd lost, in one of the other drawers so that was good!

I can’t bear it when people correct the op. Sickoffamilydrama, you are being very patient.

DilemmaDelilah · 15/01/2022 08:42

Nothing to do with your draws/drawers, but what is it with people using stall instead of stool! The number of foot stalls I've seen for sale on facebook marketplace is incredible! At least draw sounds nearly the same as drawer, but stall doesn't sound anything like stool!

With the OP being Southern draw will indeed sound exactly like drawer, however, it sounds nothing like it in different areas of the country. Here in Scotland there's a totally new sound of a hard r after the draw sound. I work with many dyslexic learners and they rarely miss out an r sound as they spell phonetically.

Draw makes perfect sense phonetically in a Southern accent. Perhaps stall and stool sound very similar in a different accent?

Sickoffamilydrama · 15/01/2022 09:37

Yes stool and stall do sound similar in my accent. I always remember DD teacher saying that she was getting problems with the children in a small rural school pronouncing F & Th differently due to the regional accent and it was causing them problems including DD.

I can’t bear it when people correct the op. Sickoffamilydrama, you are being very patient. thanks I take it from the perspective that people aren't doing it to be cruel or superior although nasty people have done that to me in the past in a previous job role luckily Karma paid them back!

CliffsofMohair · 15/01/2022 09:51

@Sickoffamilydrama

Whoops in fairness I do have dyslexia but normally okay with standard words maybe that's why it's pissed off I've been calling it the wrong name 🤣

The screw idea is good and might work. It is giving me the rage! Don't think I have any small enough suction cups.

Don’t worry you’re not the only one.

You’re likely spelling it as it sounds in your head ‘draw’. If you lived where I am it would be unmissable ‘drawER’.
