To think we are doing nothing wrong! Child benefit?

Name changed.

We are moving to Ireland for my dh's job but I still work for a U.K. company (remotely) My dm is adamant I need to cancel my child benefit before I move as the dc won't be in the country! I haven't looked into it correctly yet. But as far as I can see we are still entitled to it as I technically work for the U.K.? I don't think I need to cancel before I go...I don't want to act out of haste to be honest.

Obviously I'll start my research but does anyone know off hand
@Chulainn thank you that's very helpful I'll give them a call!
No problem. If you have any other questions send me a DM. I'm not an expert but am a parent who got caught between both systems (living in Ireland) so might be able to help.

It's not as straightforward as just claiming Irish child benefit, either -- any child you're claiming for will have to have a PPSN, and unless your child was born here, you will have to apply for that first, and to prove 'habitual residence' (which depends on how long you have lived in the state, your right to live in the state, the nature of your work, and evidence of your plans to remain permanently.) Covid has made the backlog big in both cases.

It took us the best part of a year after moving back to Ireland (both parents Irish, child born abroad) to get DS a PPSN and start CB.

It's 140 euro per month per child. I don't know how that compares to the UK.

You live abroad, you can’t claim CB. Simple!

Damnman · 14/01/2022 13:26

@Foolsrule it's really not that simple.

@Peas252

I think you will need to wait for Sue Grays report for a definitive answer.
This post tickled me Grin

Because you worry about your children commiting fraud and don't want your DD to lose money.

In which case, you have them call child benefit office and find out the actual answer.

Not quite, there are some cases where foreign nationals live in their home country but work in the U.K and therefore are required under E.U law to make U.K National Insurance contributions. Due to making the contributions they are able to submit for CB even though they and their children live in another EU country.
This applies to no U.K. personnel working in shipping and offshore on U.K registered installations.

@Damnman - it is though, if you read the relevant legislation. @saleorbouy is right in that there are some exceptions, eg Crown Servants, but since you haven’t mentioned that this applies, it’s pretty straightforward.
