First off this is not a COVID denier thread.

But I’m wondering what was the weird things you did at the start of the pandemic because you were worried about CV. I’ll go first;

Left my shoes outside the house as was worried about bringing the virus ‘in’ in case someone had coughed on the pavement !

Bleached the door handles daily.

Feel like I was a bit crazy now 😂😭

@JesusInTheCabbageVan

Do roaches piss?
yes
JesusInTheCabbageVan · 14/01/2022 12:20

I'm sure it's been mentioned, but LET THE CABBAGES DIE was a crowning MN moment.

Thread here: www.mumsnet.com/Talk/coronavirus/3859832-And-I-shall-say-it-again-We-are-allowed-out-once-a-day-for-fresh-air. A poster was asking about visiting her allotment patch, and someone replied, 'Leave your bloody cabbages to die unless you potentially want one of your relatives to end up stored at your local ice rink.'

I never disinfected shopping, but I do remember being paranoid that I might be asymptomatic and killing everyone I walked past. Blush

JesusInTheCabbageVan · 14/01/2022 12:22

@VelvetChairGirl source?

VelvetChairGirl · 14/01/2022 12:25

I do remember going to asda at the start (after I'd self isolated because me and my son had it before lockdown) and being bemused at everyone running round like idiots wearing gloves panic buying pasta and bog roll etc.

I was very confused about it due to Brexit you see, I had expected shortages for that and increased prices so had been slowly stocking up on cheap pasta and German sausages etc, I had a spare pack of kitchen towel, bog roll, soap, extra sanitary towels etc because they all say made in EU on them.

I was bemused wondering why these people were all running around now and hadn't they already stocked up for brexit? especially because of the pasta thing as that all says made in italy on it so I got loads in before brexit.

@VelvetChairGirl

Curious to know…. Have you and do you wash ALL your shopping every tine irrespective of covid?!

VelvetChairGirl · 14/01/2022 12:28

they release some kind of liquid when they are bricking it, I am not sure exactly what it is but I bet its dirty, try catching one in a glass and leave it a while, it will secrete liquid thats pee coloured

yes, all things get wiped with disinfectant, my family have always done that.

new clothing and towels etc get washed, new shoes get wiped especially on the inside in case anyones tried them on before with their dirty socks.

ShirleyPhallus · 14/01/2022 12:30

I never washed my shopping or quarantined my post or anything, but I think it’s a bit unfair to look back at the people who did things that were within the guidance at the time, like keeping 2m distance when out and about, not hugging etc. It might sound like some people were “sheeple” but actually everyone was just afraid and doing what the government health advisors recommend

OnceuponaRainbow18 · 14/01/2022 12:31

@ShirleyPhallus

I agree, but looking back is it pretty mental how we could only leave the house once a day to exercise and keep 2m away from others .

MyComputerGetsSadWithoutMe · 14/01/2022 12:39

I didn't do anything. I followed the rules and didn't meet people but I wasn't wearing a mask back then, we would sometimes be rebels and go out twice a day, I didn't sanitise my shopping or avoid places with people and I didn't leave my post for however long. My grandma still does lots of this stuff people are saying :(

VelmaandShaggy · 14/01/2022 12:40

Some of the plastic till screens shops still have up where you are squeezing and contorting and in pain trying to fit items and make payments through the miniscule gap .. still here and annoying!

theruffles · 14/01/2022 12:40

Crossed the street if anyone was walking towards me; carried a shopping bag round to my MiL's in case anyone thought I was breaking the rules and going out more than once a day for non-essentials (she was in our bubble); refused to touch petrol pumps without gloves because I'd read petrol stations were high risk areas; didn't take DD into a shop during the whole of lockdown 1.0 in fear of being told off for being out shopping with more than 1 person from the same household.

I calmed down a bit by lockdown 2.0 and 3.0 but we used to take DD to the garden centre just for somewhere different that was indoors.

JesusInTheCabbageVan · 14/01/2022 12:40

@VelvetChairGirl I know I'm being pedantic (AND derailing the thread...) but in the interests of curiosity I did some Googling. The secretion comes from the abdominal glands and is intended to deter predators. Cockroaches PROBABLY don't urinate as most insects don't; plus they have no bladder or urethra.

Every day a school day, eh Grin

PeeAche · 14/01/2022 12:41

I didn't "stock up" on anything because I fundamentally disagreed with panic buying.

But everyone else did and so...

We ran out of toilet paper and had to wipe our arses on flannels. 😳

theruffles · 14/01/2022 12:43

I forgot one...pouncing upon certain grocery items like dried yeast or plain flour if there was ever some in the supermarket because it became so difficult to find. My local shop must have got hold of a massive sack of flour and was selling it in 200g plastic bags that they'd measured out themselves. I never brought any but that was weird.

AllThePogs · 14/01/2022 12:45

It is because loads of people were baking with their kids because everywhere was closed. So it led to shortages as supermarkets only stock what is normal use.

AllThePogs · 14/01/2022 12:46

My facebook feed of the time was full of kids and their baking. It isn't normally!

well I'm sure if the insects are full of germs any secretions will be too so it all amounts to the same thing.

as I said before I have had plenty of pet rodents wasnt bothered by them at all jumping on my plate etc as i knew where they'd been.

Trying2611 · 14/01/2022 12:59

I live in Wales and at one point you could go to the pub for an alcoholic drink but only if you ordered food with the drink couldn't just get a drink on it's own as COVID could not get you if were eating as well as drinking

They were expensive and full nights out Blush WHY!!!

PlanetNormal · 14/01/2022 13:05

@Toanewstart22

I’m curious

Would you do all those again knowing what you know now?

Being asthmatic, yes, knowing what I know now, I would still have been ultra-cautious from before the official lockdown started until I was vaccinated. I was determined to dodge the bullet, wait for the vaccines and put my trust in the amazingly brilliant scientists.
Inmypjsagain · 14/01/2022 13:07

I still clean my shopping, I think I always will, the first time I did it I was shocked how grubby the stuff was and didn’t want to be putting that into my cupboards. Have always washed the fruit and veg… some people may think it’s bonkers but I’m sticking with it 😊

I think generally not seeing family for months was the weirdest part, presumably seeing so few people we were all low risk in hindsight, sad I missed time with some people. Also the fact I did my daily walk at 10pm as it was less busy… it was an odd time

AllThePogs · 14/01/2022 13:08

I still wash my hands more which I think is good.

PlanetNormal · 14/01/2022 13:18

@AllThePogs

Me too. Looking back, I now realise my hand hygiene was poor pre-pandemic. 🤢
anotherbloodyyearofcovid · 14/01/2022 13:19

not me (honest!) but someone I know used to leave their newspaper out to bleach in the sun to decontaminate before bringing it into the house to read.

I washed my shopping and crossed the road if anyone came too close - still do cross the road, or at least veer into the gutter to avoid oncoming covid-carriers.
