I spend £40 on each contract (I have 2 teens 15 and 18) plus £40 and £60 of pocket money. Yet they refuse to do anything to help, they are rude and think I’m unreasonable. Am I ?

£10 x 3 children. They participate fully in their share of the chores.

lechatnoir · 13/01/2022 20:32

£10 with giffgaff and £20 allowance. If they want more they get a PT job

HermioneWeasley · 13/01/2022 20:34

£8 for sim only. Got a reconditioned phone for birthday

£20 allowance

Quantity5 · 13/01/2022 20:35

£20 but mine is helpful and does plenty of dog walking, sibling minding, comes shopping with me and cooks. He would get very little if he was an arse to me.

RagzReturnedUnwrapped · 13/01/2022 20:35

£6.50 each. Phones cost £100-120 each. Generally last 2 years then get replaced as a birthday or Christmas present. If it breaks they get one of my old ones.
£10 a month basic pocket money and the option of earning £20+ for doing various chores. Sometimes they do, sometimes they don't. Works for us. 11,14,15.

copernicium · 13/01/2022 20:36

£20 each child; they sort their own rooms out, one loads and empties dishwasher and one sorts and puts away (certain) clothes loads. If they want extra things like a camp with their clubs, they have to do a big job like weed the drive. And if I just need a bit of help with something, they do it when asked because we all live here too.

Crikey, God help whoever they marry/live with. Especially (I know, I know), if they’re male.
RedskyThisNight · 13/01/2022 20:39

£5 for DD and £10 for DS (he tends to be out more burns through data).

I wouldn't link paying for a phone with jobs. Jobs are things you do because you live in the house. Phones are basically essentials these days (although you clearly don't need to pay for such expensive contracts).

cheninblanc · 13/01/2022 20:39

£20 on unlimited data sim only. Phones were paid off as part of the contract last year. £80 allowance and they both work too in little jobs

NoLongerTroels · 13/01/2022 20:39

£10 sim only with Tesco. The phone was a present after GCSE's iPhone XR. More than enough data she says.

AnxiousHeffalump · 13/01/2022 20:40

£15

AlwaysLatte · 13/01/2022 20:40

I think we only pay £10 each ish per month but we always buy their phones outright as it's cheaper. As long as they complete their homework and get good grades we're happy.

Shuffletime · 13/01/2022 20:43

£15 phone & sim. Don't really do an allowance as such, just give money as needed but tbf he rarely asks. If he was constantly asking I would have to set a limit. He does a few jobs around the house but will moan if we dare ask for any jobs above his regular chores.

Beaconoflight · 13/01/2022 20:43

Thank you so much all for your input. My 17 years old thinks she shouldn’t do anything as she is studying for her a levels. I’m feeling overwhelmed

When mine were just in secondary school they had hand me down phones,£10 giff gaff sim cards etc as theyve got older the phone contracts got more expensive particularly as they use a lot of data.
So contracts now are around £30-35. They dont have the latest iPhone but at if their friends do so I think there's a lot of parents paying an awful lot for their families phone contracts.

elliejjtiny · 13/01/2022 20:47

13 and 15 year old both have payg phones. We top them up when they run out so £10 every 1 or 2 years. 15 year-old mostly uses his phone to listen to music (using our home Wi-Fi). 13 year old mostly doesn't bother with his.

gingercat02 · 13/01/2022 20:47

ID mobile SIM only £6 per month unlimited calls and texts 3Gb data. He's only 13 so that's loads. Me DH and my Mum have similar SIM only deals

ShanghaiDiva · 13/01/2022 20:47

£10
Dd is expected to help at home. This is not for financial reward, but expected of all family members to contribute. Only exception is during exam/revision periods.

I'm wondering if you meant "months" or you simply have the most frugal teens ever!

To be fair, my 17 year old is also studying for his A Levels and we have reduced what we expect him to do round the house as he was getting quite stressed with what he had to do (3000 words NEA at the moment). He's still expected to do some things though (and he genuinely is using the time to work).
GertrudePerkinsPaperyThing · 13/01/2022 20:50

Dd 13 has a £10 gif gaff goody bag for her phone which is plenty (phone was bought renewed), and £5 per week pocket money t

Oh and he gets £4 per week pocket money, lunches paid for , scouts and football subs and a season ticket for football. He has to set the table, keep his room in reasonable condition, put his washing in the basket and put the clean stuff away. No real chores.
FluentlyExasperatedMadam · 13/01/2022 20:52

I have a 17 Yr old and I pay for an £8 giffgaff goodybag which is 3g or £10 for 12g, he has no pocket money, rarely asks buy I would give him money of I have it. He had chores which are emptying kitchen bin when needed and hoovers up as it gives me a migraine for some unknown reason you are being to allowing

When you say 'anything', do you mean she literally won't do anything ie the very basics including clear up after herself, laundry in basket, put clean washing away, help lay/clear the table after a meal etc

Or are you wanting her to do bigger chores? Either way she's being a precious madam and needs to pull her weight Envy unless she has no time for sport, hobbies or socialising because she's studying, then she's got time to help around the house.

Isaw3ships · 13/01/2022 20:52

£8

  • oldest tidies, does laundry, walks dog, sets and clears table, does dishwasher, makes beds, vacuums. He’s 11. 9’year old does almost as much.
