Not seen neighbours in weeks lights and heating on

Been thinking to myself the last week or so how weird it is that we haven't seen the neighbours in weeks probably coming up to a month now. Every single light on in the house and heating on all day and night.

They have had lots of police involvement in the past, she had 4 older children with learning difficulties police were being called out so many times a week. Her children are normally jumping on the car roof slamming doors etc. Not seen or heard a peep from them since mid December. I always felt sorry for her because it seemed like she couldn't cope with all of them in that small house they were running her ragged.

I knocked on yesterday morning and obviously no answer, is this something you would report to the police or just leave it?

OP posts:

Oh this has given me a little chill. I hope it all just has an innocent explanation

rrhuth · 16/01/2022 06:04

Don't try the door etc.

Happylittlethoughts · 16/01/2022 06:16

They've probably done a flit, but you're right to check.

MistakenHoliday · 16/01/2022 06:31

How strange and unsettling OP. I hope you get some answers.

Lucycantdance · 16/01/2022 07:28

Any update OP?

GoodnightGrandma · 16/01/2022 07:36

I agree, sounds like they’ve done a flit and left the electric/gas on to be an arse.

GrannytoaUnicorn · 16/01/2022 08:18

If this WAS the incident in York then OP will have been told by Police not to say anymore

CornishTiger · 16/01/2022 08:44

Police should be doing welfare checks to try and locate occupants. This can include contacting any known next of kin or associates to prompt contact. It can include checking mobile phone usage and bank account usage.

Housing association should be trying their means of contact- emails, phones etc to check if Tenant is alive and occupying. If they’ve simply gone away reminding them of tenancy obligation to not leave property unattended for periods of time ( usually 28days).

They can then start abandonment action. Gas and Electric meters reading usually help but not in this case. Water meter reading would be another one. If no response to calls visits and letters then notice to quit based on abandonment. Takes a long time! Court would need to award possession, baliff , lock change etc and clearance.

4andapup · 16/01/2022 08:44

You did the right thing OP. Well done for not turning a blind eye. Better safe than sorry!!

CornishTiger · 16/01/2022 08:45

I’d also report to Social care regarding the vulnerable children /adults not being seen.

RedHot22 · 16/01/2022 08:55

@starfishmummy

People in their 20s don’t often go about wrecking cars and running about throwing toilet rolls either. ( The op had said police called multiple times so implies that this wasn’t a one off. )

But that doesn't mean they have learning disabilities.

And you know them do you Starfish?

I think the OP has dealt with this sensitively.

CrackerGal · 16/01/2022 09:02

It sounds like they've moved away but for the fact they've left their car?
Any update?
You were definitely right to report it.
If they were on holiday I'd understand leaving lights on because we've done that, even just going out & leaving an empty house.

SarahBop · 16/01/2022 09:02

I might've missed it...but did you say the house has been emptied? Can you see through any windows, or open the letter box and see if there's a smell [I really hope not]

I did wonder if carbon monoxide poisoning could be a possibility...Really hope not. All very strange!

Allergictoironing · 16/01/2022 09:13

The car may well have terminal issues e.g. knackered gearbox, blown engine. I see plenty of cars parked on people's front gardens which clearly haven't moved for years.

So nothing suspicious about the car being left behind if they have done a flit. it could easily be that a) thats one of the debts they are running from, b) car isn't worth the repair costs, or c) they just couldn't afford to get the car fixed or removed.

JustDanceAddict · 16/01/2022 09:17

@JustLyra - that is not true. We own a flat and when the tenants move on and we occasionally have a gap, we are immediately contacted by the council for council tax and have to pay any gas/leccy in the interim.

Frazzled2207 · 16/01/2022 09:17

Pleased you reported. Unfortunately they may not let you know the outcome.

I reckon rent arrears most likely and they just upped and left in a hurry.

starfishmummy · 16/01/2022 09:22

Actually RedHot22 the OP has said she was just guessing based on behaviour. They could equally be mentally ill and I expect the OP would have been jumped on if she had said that.

Tdcp · 16/01/2022 09:26

I'm glad you've reported it op, when my uncle died no one noticed for about a month, his friends didn't check up on him and his neighbours said they thought it was weird that they hadn't seen him go out in so long ...
( He lived in Brighton, I'm in Yorkshire)

Not seen neighbours in weeks lights and heating on
lightisnotwhite · 16/01/2022 09:43

I used to live in a homeless hostel run by a housing association. A girl in the room next to me moved in borrowed my corkscrew and wasn’t seen again.
It was months before the council came and cleared her room. All was just taken to the tip.Such a waste. It was really sad too as her personal stuff like a stuffed rabbit got skipped as well. No idea what happened to her.

GrandmasCat · 16/01/2022 09:52

@Gargellen

I would ask the police to do a welfare check.

Reminds me of the woman that had been dead in her flat for four years with the telly going day and night. The neighbours said that in retrospect, it did seem odd.

She was only discovered because her bank account had run out of money for her rent payments to fail.

I had heard of that lady but someway I assumed she was very old or troubled.

I just read an article in the Guardian of her, and it turns she was beautiful, successful, a high flyer and up to a year before her death, very very sociable. It does make you wonder how she was never missed

Indoctro · 16/01/2022 09:53

How strange but well done for noticing and actually caring.

Hopefully they have just done a midnight flit and everyone is ok.

SnoopyLovesLucy · 16/01/2022 09:55

Far from it @CrackerGal . I'm making an observation not coming along to solve the mystery or recount personal experiences Grin
