AIBU-Sick of the narrative that young people can’t buy homes?

Henryhoover12 · 12/01/2022 17:04

I had a heated discussion with some friends who said it’s “impossible for young people to get on the property ladder these days”.If they do their parents either lent them the money, gifted them the money or they lived at home rent free to save up. It’s not just my friends a lot of people of this age go on about it.

As a young person myself I’m bloody sick of this narrative, anything can be done if your willing to make sacrifices and prioritise for your goals which most young people aren’t. I purchased my own 4 bedroom home at 22 (few months ago) WITHOUT any help from family and whilst paying rent on a flat WITHOUT help from my family to pay for.

I called out all my friends who are blaming how it’s going on their ability to stop online shopping for new outfits every event, going out for cocktails, getting hair/nails/tan done weekly, Taking flashy cars out on finance, etc. that if they stopped then they to could buy but I got told I was being extremely unreasonable and that it’s impossible, well is it or do they not just like to hear the truth.

When did you move out OP? Was it before your A-levels and and during the whole 7years of working? Where did you live while at uni?
I’ve read through and don’t think I’ve missed your answers to these.

Don't feed the trolls and their baiting troll posts folks. People like OP live on the responses to offset their sad lives.

YANBU and I think its a really damaging narrative to young people.

I was on here around 5 years ago now - around the time of Brexit willing on a crash as I thought it was impossible.

I had never actually looked into it seriously - ie. getting a mortgage, prices around the country etc. It was more achievable than I thought if we moved to another area, and banks were more than happy to lend to us on 17k each.

I got thoroughly told off by one MN poster who went against the grain. We kept in touch and a year after I exchanged on my first home.

And yes that was because we moved back in to parents rent free. That is a privilege to some people who sadly do not have that option. But every single one of my peer group had that option - it was just too much of a sacrifice to make as thats no fun at all after years of independence.

Forever grateful to that poster as we wouldn't be where we are today without them. I am now sitting in my second home at the age of 30, a 2000sqft detached beauty, working part time with only a £700 monthly mortgage, 50%/ 200K of equity and feel very comfortable. Thats a world of difference to where we were 5 years ago.

Sure I was miserable for a bit about saving every penny, not holidaying and moving away from friends, and living at parents home. But now its paying dividends and next year (2023) when our home refurbishments are done - I plan to start resuming the more lavish parts of life like holidays and making the most of my time off for day trips and city breaks (as DP is also going to go part time to share childcare of our first child and enjoy our time off).

And sorry to those who think this is bragging or rubbing peoples noses in it. Its not meant to be that. I hope someone somewhere reads this and is inspired like I was half a decade ago. You can do it! Go set the foundations for the rest of your life Brew

@LemonSwan has the OP name changed?

5128gap · 12/01/2022 19:44

@lemonyfox

I don't know why but god I hate the word purchase, it makes people sound so wanky. I purchased a house. Aaah!
How about when they purchase 'a property'? Grin
namechanger2222 · 12/01/2022 19:44

You sound a bit annoying.

But I'll give you this- I think there are really great jobs out there in recruitment and tech sales and people don't touch them for some reason.

If you can get one of those jobs and work really hard, you can have a lot, very quickly.

I know people in these jobs that don't even have a degree and have made a lot of money, very young.

But most people don't even consider these roles.

I think if more people went for these in jobs, they could afford houses, very easily.

parchedjanuary · 12/01/2022 19:49

The level of ignorance and judgment by some on this thread is has really surprised me! I must leave it now....I'm trying to practice self care.

Good luck OP, so many responsibilities combined with so much naivety, I think you will need it.

LemonSwan · 12/01/2022 19:49

@parchedjanuary Lol no I am my own poster!

KO81 · 12/01/2022 19:49

I think OP does deserve congratulation. She may not have gone about getting it in quite the right way and has clearly got people’s backs up, but she has bought a house at 22, and that’s pretty impressive. Assuming all she’s said is true. There isn’t really the justification for calling her names like ‘pompous wanker’. Confused

It does sound a little bit like women who are back in their size 8 jeans the day after a c-section saying “I just don’t understand why women don’t all fit in their own clothes after having a baby”, but I’m feel charitable and she’s excited and proud and honestly, that’s not undeserved.

My friend did something similar and she’s worked her way up the property ladder and is on a cracking home now. I did not, but I managed to get into a well-paying industry so I got away with my 20-something frivolities.

@Henryhoover12

I really do need to go but some of you do make me chuckle.

-can’t you use husband and partner interchangeably? I am married to him but that doesn’t change the fact he’s my life partner
-speaking of my other posts the nightmare neighbours moved thankfully and the new neighbours are lovely (and HAVE DOGS) and my husband/partner/whatever I can call him swapped jobs so actually we’re not stuck at all.
-this post wasn’t intended to come of smug but in true Molly mae fashion we all have 24 hours a day as Beyoncé and she purchased a mansion at 19 so why can’t you (this last bit was a joke please don’t come for me 🤣🤣)

The "nightmare neighbours" moved? The ones who definitely wouldn't move from the cul de sac because all the other houses were owned by their family members?

And you're avoiding the fact that you said on the dog thread last July that you'd bought your house over a year ago.

But of course you've got to dash now and won't be able to post again because you've been caught out bullshitting

Royalbloo · 12/01/2022 19:54

Unless you actually bought the house, outright, you qualified for a MASSIVE LOAN.

Congrats on your massive loan...?!

ParsleySageRosemary · 12/01/2022 19:58

Really op. Well I'd got my PhD in applied physics, back in 1980 when having a phd actually meant something, when I was 6. Of course I'd bought my 7 bed mansion at 18 while paying rent on a simply stunning little maisonette in Richmond with no help whatsoever, because naturally having all the servants paid by centuries of inheritance doing the cleaning doesn't actually count. So yes, those servants should bally well get off their rear and do the same.

In other words - ODFOD.

Willyoujustbequiet · 12/01/2022 20:00

You are clearly very young as you seem to have such little empathy towards others whose situations may be vastly different from yours.

I bought at 20. I found it easy. I was lucky.

sadpapercourtesan · 12/01/2022 20:00

Oh god, another witless throwback Thatcherite who thinks using words like "narrative" will make their unreconstructed ramblings sound intelligent.

DrSbaitso · 12/01/2022 20:01

No he hasn't. It's gold plated bollocks. All it needed was something about it being very working class to wait until after you're 30 to buy a house and we'd have the only kind of full house OP could acquire.

ufucoffee · 12/01/2022 20:19

Yanbu. It irritates me. Young people can buy homes. Lots do without handouts from parents. They might not be where they really want to live, but they can buy homes.

C8H10N4O2 · 12/01/2022 20:23

I've always found SimCity to be very affordable as well. So did all my DC who had detached houses by their early teens.

Treedown · 12/01/2022 20:28

YANBU you can get on the ladder to a new , v nice £250k 3 bed shared ownership house (air source heat pumps, pv panels etc too) in Newcastle for a deposit of £2.5k . it's a great way to start and I have several friends who have progressed up the ladder this way.

This OP. Me and DP get the keys next week, we've also just qualified for the MASSIVE LOAN, but annoyingly ours didn't come free with an arrogant attitude which is disappointing!
sayanythingelse · 12/01/2022 20:54

Sounds a lot like a colleague of mine. 24 and just moved to the North East from the South and brags that he bought a 4 bedroom house ... on the government equity loan scheme and on a new build estate surrounded by the shittiest, crime ridden council estate ever. I'd rather have the Audi A1, the clothes and some fun whilst I'm still young.

Treedown · 12/01/2022 21:08

@sayanythingelse there's a lot of new build schemes In very nice parts of the North east too
