To not vote for Labour as a former conservative voter, would you vote for Labour now?

Just that. This thread is for anyone who has voted conservative in the past to ask what you’d do in the future. Please don’t derail with anything else.

I voted conservative most of my life until Boris came along. I voted LD in the last election not just because of Brexit, but because I couldn’t support the way that Boris conducted himself and his party.

But. If there were an election tomorrow I couldn’t bring myself to vote Labour. I can’t put my finger on why. It’s partly because KS just hasn’t cut through, I don’t question his integrity but I can’t quite see him as a statesman? And partly because Angela Raynor makes me worried that the Corbyn politics could rear their head again at any moment. Rightly or wrongly, she comes across to me as being too aggressively against people who have made a success of their lives —there, I said it— !!

So I wondered how many former conservative voters feel the same or not and why… partly as a proxy for how BJ might weather the partygate storm?

YANBU - I don’t want to vote conservative but Labour haven’t convinced me either so I won’t be voting for them

YABU - I don’t want to vote conservative again and I’d vote Labour

Sortof pretty much as it's the least worst option, this does not mean that I think neoliberalism has been 'done' well to date though. As clearly it hasn't.

Iamclearlyamug · 12/01/2022 14:34

@ilovesooty I’m not saying they would be, I’m simply saying that WOMEN’S rights (actual women, adult human females) aren’t likely to be any better under a government who refuse to admit that we even exist!

zaffa · 12/01/2022 14:35

Hi - I'm a Tory voter who has voted Labour 😊 I voted for Cameron (twice) and then took a long hard look at what I was voting for and the way we were living and switched sides to vote for Corbin (wholeheartedly signed up to a Corbin Labour).
I don't know if I'd vote Labour again - I don't like Starmer or the way he has handled things in the party. I don't think any of the other parties stand a chance though, it's Labour or tories it feels like (and I will never mark a ballot paper in favor of the tories again - nothing to do with lockdown parties and everything to do with general conduct since Brexit).

I am also a bit 😮 at people who think that women are in any way prioritized by Tory policies 😂

zaffa · 12/01/2022 14:36

Argh! **Corbyn!! Stupid autocorrect.

pointythings · 12/01/2022 14:38

If I had a vote (I don't, I'm an EU national) I would have to vote tactically. I'm in a very blue area, but a tactical alliance between Lib Dems and Labour could conceivably oust Hatt Mancock (who is my MP).

I would never vote Conservative. Neoliberalism is an evil ethos that is only for people who are happy for others to live in poverty within an affluent nation.

wineandroses1 · 12/01/2022 14:39

Not sure why people think Keir Stamer is dull and sanctimonious. I think he is ethical, honest and sincere, which is what we need in our politicians. Previously I have voted conservative, but I no longer agree with their ethos (and Boris' obfuscations and downright lies but mostly re Brexit - how on earth are we better off outside of the EU?). I'll be voting labour next time (as Keir is in charge - couldn't have voted for Jeremy though!).

HoliHormonalTigerlilly · 12/01/2022 14:43

Please don't vote Tory folks.

Alisae · 12/01/2022 14:45

Voted Labour until the last two elections, then voted Conservative.

Would still lean towards labour if they hadn’t gone down the gender ideology rabbit hole. Currently following the conservative womens group who are doing some good work (certainly have more faith in them than a party who can’t even say our sex class exists!), so I guess it will be conservative again this time for me.

I'm not going to YABU or YANBU but I've voted conservative in the past and I'm a Labour voter now. I would never 100% pin my colours to any mast but Labour tick most of my boxes at the moment.
CamomileTeabag · 12/01/2022 14:52

I voted Tory in 2010 on the back the Iraq war and Labour having become complacent in power.
I have regretted my part in what has followed every day since.
I do not honestly know how any person with a shred of decency could vote, campaign or stand on a Tory ticket these days. There is no way I would ever want to be associated with the current bunch of lying crooks. I could not be more angry about the destruction they've caused, especially under Boris Johnson's watch. The minute Parliament was prorogued in Sept 2019, it was obvious to me that the country's basic democracy was in deep, deep trouble, and I haven't changed that view at all.

wineandroses1 · 12/01/2022 14:53

See, the whole gender ideology is a massive problem for parties, I think most people are happy to support those people who wish to transition, until it becomes a massive invasion of natal women (safe spaces, gym changing rooms. women's toilets, prisons based on actual sexes, natal men competing in sports against natal women etc etc). Feels like so many people and organisations have drank the kool aid and that makes women very vulnerable.

RedRobyn2021 · 12/01/2022 14:55

I would vote conservative again and not labour. You didn't give that option.

CamomileTeabag · 12/01/2022 14:58

@User6397254

Hopefully the Tories will get a decent leader in before the next GE
Biscuit There are no "decent" people left in the Tory party. Not if you take decent to mean kind, empathetic, honest and principled human beings.
sst1234 · 12/01/2022 15:06

Completely understand your sentiment. Couldn’t bring myself to vote for people who don’t know what a woman is. Are even more incompetent on the economy than the Tories. And Angela Rayner.

sst1234 · 12/01/2022 15:07

@Viviennemary

I might. But not with Angela Rayner as deputy. Not keen on her ilk.
A reminder of Corbyn that needs to be got rid off, if labour are not ever to become electable again.
Mamamia7962 · 12/01/2022 15:08

No I wouldn't vote for Labour.

lilikiki · 12/01/2022 15:10

Nope
Because as much as I detest Boris I’m not voting for self ID. Womens rights are more important than this issue, to me.

Alisae · 12/01/2022 15:12

And this kind of immature hyperbole is exactly why I usually stay off these threads. The black and white thinking of Tory/evil and will eat the poor = Labour/good and will change everything is what I blame for a lot if people being turned off Labour. It only entrenched views, certainly NEVER changes someone’s vote and only leads to polarisation of political discourse.

All parties have good/bad policies depending on your viewpoint. All politicians are human beings, whether you vehemently disagree with them or not. All parties have corrupt elements. Instead of trying to beat people over the head with your purity for a brief rush of feeling superior, maybe try discussing things respectfully and not pigeon holing entire segments of the population!?

Sorry @RedRobyn2021 you’re right… by “former” I should have qualified voted Tory in past but don’t want to this time, need to find a more sophisticated way of doing it!

I can’t vote Labour because of gender ideology. Their wilful blindness over this issue will cost them at election time, even against incompetent opposition.

I agree that Angela Rayner puts me off too much. I’m not sure I could vote for a party that has her in such a prominent position.
I really like Lisa Nandy.

SonicBroom · 12/01/2022 15:19

Interesting how many are saying that Labour’s gender ideology is a problem. Especially as women tend to be more likely to be floating voters than men

Earlydancing · 12/01/2022 15:20

Typically the thread has gone the way of 'I've never voted Tory so I'm not going to vote Tory." I'm not sure what that adds to people's understanding.

I have voted Tory, don't know if I would next time, I'd have to see what was happening by the time of the GE. But I see so many aggressive posters on here chastising and insulting people who vote or voted Conservative, that it puts me off voting Labour. If that's what Labour represents, it's not something I really want to be a part of. Plus I have voted Tory and I know lots of Tory voters who are all very decent people, do lots of good works, work hard, and are kind and generous. I like to think I'm similar. So if Labour supporters on here think we're all scum, I guess they wouldn't want us to vote for Labour. So maybe I won't. 🤔
