To schedule booster after annual leave

Meatandseventeenveg · 10/01/2022 17:34

So the disclaimer is that I know a lot of people just have to have the booster whenever it's available, and some people do have significant side effects.

My colleague just took an extended Christmas break (though not away on holiday), and was due to return to work today. She scheduled some quite important client meetings for today, but then she didn't come in as she had the booster yesterday and was feeling unwell. She didn't reschedule the meetings either; rather, she palmed them off on us and even obliged one colleague to run a meeting on an account he didn't know at all.

We're all feeling very indignant and believe she should have arranged her booster during the holidays or at least on a day where she wasn't working the following day (p/t worker).

Are we being unreasonable to be annoyed with her?

That does seem a bit irritating, given that side effects are predictable it's sensible to schedule it for a day when you're not at work the next day if possible.

Ponoka7 · 10/01/2022 17:37

The side effects can last for days, so I don't see how it's possible. I had terrible headaches for four days and felt unwell in a way I couldn't pin point.

DiddyHeck · 10/01/2022 17:40

YABU you don't know if she was well enough to have had it at a time that suited you and anyway, tit for tat behaviour is childish.

Meatandseventeenveg · 10/01/2022 17:40

How is it tit for tat?

Svara · 10/01/2022 17:43

If she is possibly going to be unwell then she shouldn't have to use holiday for that.

Meatandseventeenveg · 10/01/2022 17:45

Most of us booked our boosters on a Friday or before a day we didn't work

gobbledygoook · 10/01/2022 17:46

YABU. She can use her annual leave to take an extended Christmas break, whether or not she's travelling. Yesterday might have been the most convenient available time to get the booster 🤷🏻‍♀️

Meatandseventeenveg · 10/01/2022 17:47

Except for a few who were particularly keen to get boosted asap and (understandably) did it straight away.

OP posts:
Candyss · 10/01/2022 17:48

how do you know she didnt book her booster at the earliest available?

maybe she didnt want to feel ill during her holiday from work which is fair enough. if possible though she could have rearranged her meetings.

Candyss · 10/01/2022 17:49

feels very immature to know you've all been sat there discussing her and her private medical life too

Svara · 10/01/2022 17:51

I would avoid a Friday myself, you could lose your whole weekend to illness and then have to work another week without a proper break in between. I don't think that's fair as it's not like other self inflicted illness like drinking too much on a Friday night. You should be able to take sick leave.

Meatandseventeenveg · 10/01/2022 17:54

Of course everyone is entitled to sick leave when they need it. An very interested to hear that we are unreasonable - I thought it was pretty standard to schedule medical stuff on days off to avoid disruption

SoftPillow · 10/01/2022 17:56

I think it's fairly well known that you might get some strong side effects.

So, if she booked it deliberately the day before returning to work, that's poor form.

But, if that was the only option (can't see that it would be but I'll give her the option) then that's just how it is.

Thing is, you'll never know which it was.

She should have cancelled the meetings.

Svara · 10/01/2022 17:58

She did have it on her day off. Though at my workplace you are allowed two hours paid appointment. I think a Sunday is a good choice as you don't lose the weekend, though I would let my manager know I was having it and avoid scheduling anything important for a couple of days afterwards.

JuergenSchwarzwald · 10/01/2022 17:59

Maybe she had it when she could get an appointment? Originally I booked an appointment for 5th Jan, but then I was offered one through my GP for just before Christmas.

But she did have it on her day off!
UrbanSpaceboy · 10/01/2022 18:04

She maybe could have organised her calendar better (although without going into mad detail we can't say) but in general it's not unreasonable to take time off for illness. You only get a few weeks off a year. Being ill for it is a waste.

On a population level consideration, maybe working days lost to side effects will hasten efforts to reduce said side effects.

maddy68 · 10/01/2022 18:05

I don't think she has done anything wrong. She has the booster , she feels grotty afterwards. Fair play

Meatandseventeenveg · 10/01/2022 18:08

Does it make any difference that I now have to spend my evening working to catch up with the stuff I couldn't do today because of covering her? I suppose that means I should be annoyed with my company, rather than the individual, for ending up in this position.

OP posts:
Muchtoomuchtodo · 10/01/2022 18:10

I had no choice with my appointments - got a letter with the date, time and location and it was impossible to get through on the phone to rearrange.

I felt well after each dose (just a sore arm). She probably thought she’d be fine too.

You don’t sound like a very nice bunch of colleagues tbh.

Yes of course it means being annoyed with the company
DDivaStar · 10/01/2022 18:15

It was unwise to book for her jab the day before important meetings and a return to work from holiday. It would have made sense to do it before a weekend or at least a quiet week at work. That is assuming she had choice.

GreenFingersWouldBeHandy · 10/01/2022 18:18

Of course you're being unreasonable! How can you predict if someone has side-effects from a booster jab?

Wow, really spiteful.

Hope your booster goes OK.

Boombastic22 · 10/01/2022 18:20

She’s not being unreasonable. Much less unreasonable than those who won’t have the vaccine. She’s taking steps to keep you all safe and avoiding time off work (needing to isolate if not vax). Why should she use up her holiday for this

vodkaredbullgirl · 10/01/2022 18:21

Hmm can't win on here
