Do you believe you reap what you sow?

OP posts:
Thirtytimesround · 10/01/2022 23:30

Nope. In my experience, only rich successful people believe that you reap what you sow. The richer my banker brother gets, the more he believes in karma. 🤔

People who live in war zones or places like mid-Africa tend to know that this is not true.

longwayoff · 10/01/2022 23:41

Not really but my fingers are crossed that Bozo will be getting his soon. 'Two fingers to all you plebs' smirks Boz as he knocks back the champers at the staff garden party, 'rules are for other people. Hey, constable, here's a glass for you. Shame your colleagues are out arresting mums trying to take their kids to the park- that's illegal for them to do you know - but at least we're getting revenue from the fines. What ho suckers!' So yes please, Great Wheel of Fortune, turn for Bozo. Soon.

Our PM won't reap anything apart from a fat final salary pension and an even fatter salary on the speech circuit once he steps down. He'll probably be knighted in a few years time as well :(
Tony Blair took the UK into a war in the 00s on very scant advice ( that was subsequently 'lost ' ) and thousands lost their lives. The repercussions of that decision is still rumbling around now.
He is a multi millionaire with several homes and about to be become a ' sir '
David Cameron signed off a referendum which has caused so much division and lost the economy billions ( or will do) and disappeared once his chickens came home to roost . He is another rich one with more money than sense.
No, people don't reap whey they sow, they seem to do very well thank you ( for certain politicians , anyway )
That's just three examples too!
The most selfish self serving people I know always come out on top.

DrSbaitso · 11/01/2022 09:49

Not in a simplistic quid pro quo way. But your actions do shape your future (that's the real meaning of karma) and the harder you work, the luckier you get.

If you go around being routinely terrible to everyone, you will eventually find you piss off the wrong person.

readingismycardio · 11/01/2022 09:56

Yes, definitely, sooner or later.

NigellaLawdaughter · 11/01/2022 10:17

In the end, overall -- yes.

(And even with that, life still isn't fair.)

inheritancetrack · 11/01/2022 10:30

Often yes, but certainly not always. If you work and study hard, you usually end up with a good job you enjoy. If you can't be bothered to put the effort into work, you end up in dead end jobs or none at all. An abused partner will often walk leaving the abuser alone having lost their home and children.

I think it's just saying your life is your responsibility and how you behave will have the outcome you expect. Obviously a good 50% is just good or bad luck, so it can all go tits up regardless of your efforts.

LemonLimelight · 11/01/2022 10:47

No and I can confirm it doesn't even work that well with crops, last year I sowed lettuces and got slugs, sweetcorn and got leafy cobless sticks, and tomatoes and got blight. Did get some nice apples but then I planted them 6 years ago. Life is definitely down to luck primarily. You can try your best to enjoy what you get given and seek out opportunities but you often receive back something totally different to what you put in.

MrsSkylerWhite · 11/01/2022 10:50

In terms of relationships/friendships, yes.
In terms of hard work, sadly not always.

Charles11 · 11/01/2022 10:57

only sometimes and there will be exceptions. Things that have a direct correlation like working hard and passing exams, how you treat others will impact on the relationship further down the line, exercise and eat well and improve your health and so on.
But be an arse and you’ll have a shit life? no not really as being an arse can still reap admiration and career benefits.

teaandtoastwithmarmite · 11/01/2022 11:00

I like to think so but some people manage to be horrible to others and just carry on with their nice lives. They also seem to be the most popular people too.

TAKESNOSHITSHIRLEY · 11/01/2022 13:39

karma yes
religion wise im a atheist but a very heavy believer in karma

ive seen it happen in person

example my partner of 22 years left us (me and 2 disabled sons that need 24/7 care) in sept 2020 for my best friend over night. complete shock as we were happy.
knocked me and the kids for 6,still not over the double betrayal to this day and will never forgive
ive known him 22 years her 7.

in all that time nothing bad happened to either of them than the normal life experiences

from day 3 of them being together to this day they have had so so much bad luck and major problems its got to be more than just life happening.

coincidence non believers will say but unknown to me at the time my other friend whos n to crystals and white witchcraft told me months and months later she did a bad luck spell on them both and in her belief the universe /earths forces(shes a atheist too)will fix the betrayers and wrong uns

Clarissa76 · 11/01/2022 13:45

I don’t believe in any external force ensuring people get their just desserts.

I do believe that being a shitty human being will generally make you miserable in the long run, whether because your actions catch up with you or because trying to do what’s right is a way in which people give their lives meaning and structure, and living without these things and without basic self-respect is hard.

Why would a white witch be casting bad luck spells on people?

And if she will, why limit herself to punishing her friend's ex? Could she not try it on murderers or rapists?

And if universal forces will fix the wrong uns, why does she need to intervene anywhere with her spells at all?

FreshandLively · 11/01/2022 13:51

Yes, not because the universe is keeping score, but because if you generally treat people well you'll find yourself surrounded by people who treat others well.

I don't think being wealthy equates to success, good relationships or happiness though.

I think wealth does bring a degree of happiness. I've been on the bones of my arse and it was miserable. Money is important.

But I do think that happiness levels rise with wealth only to a certain level, and after that, more money doesn't make you happier.

FreshandLively · 11/01/2022 13:56

My Grandad who grew up very poor and became quite comfortable (and was a throughly decent man) used to say "money can't buy happiness, but it makes being miserable a damned sight more comfortable".

Which of course is true, it's very hard to be happy if you have real money worries, but beyond that for many people money seems to bring nothing but trouble. If you don't treat people well long the way you may have people around you because of the money, but you won't have people who care for you.

User1isnotavailable · 11/01/2022 13:58

No.

Lots of luck involved. Many are born with a foot up compared to others but they often don't see that or acknowledge it since it was always down to 'hard work' Hmm

AryaStarkWolf · 11/01/2022 14:00

Sometimes, agree with others, I don't believe in "Karma" but in some cases, especially when it comes to relationships you get back from it what you put in in a lot of cases

MasterBeth · 11/01/2022 14:00

Do you believe too many cooks spoil the broth?

Fl0w3ry · 11/01/2022 14:02

Absolutely not. I’ve seen so many bad people swan through life with everything falling into their lap and going right for them. Sadly, the only saying I see evidence of is ‘the devil looks after it’s own’.

the80sweregreat · 11/01/2022 14:04

Oh yes, the devil does take care of his own !
That is very true.

ItsOverFlo · 11/01/2022 14:18

Yes,
but I honestly have to thank you for educating me on the spelling of this saying. Initially thought 'pig'!
Must be a thick sod, I guess as in soil.Hmm

grapewine · 11/01/2022 18:33

I don't think being wealthy equates to success, good relationships or happiness though.

Money can afford you choice and opportunity, which can mean a happier life.

longwayoff · 13/01/2022 11:48

Ah. 3 days later the Wheel is slowly beginning to turn. Keep going Wheel 'til the bugger's completely gone in disgrace.
