It has just dawned on me that when I refer to a man and woman couple, I always say the woman's name first. Such as "I am going to Sue and Johns", or "its in Carol and Bobs garage" etc. Is it just me or does everyone do this. I have no idea why I do it.

It depends on which one is my friend.

RedpepperRisotto · 09/01/2022 10:20

@PurpleDaisies

It depends on which one is my friend.
Me too, I'd say the name I know is my sister and husband.
RainbowZebraWarrior · 09/01/2022 10:20

Yup.

Same as I always say Mum and Dad. Not Dad and Mum. That would be weird. Maybe that's where it comes from? Grandma and Grandad, Aunty and Uncle etc

Hmmm. I need to think of more examples.

themosttiptoptopcat · 09/01/2022 10:20

Not really, the name I use first is of the person I am closer to or know better, or knew first before they were a couple, whether that is male or female.

Househunting21 · 09/01/2022 10:22

I generally put the person I'm closest to first, but if it's an equal friendship between couples then yes, woman usually comes first. It's probably because women tend to do most of the organising, which is a sad state of affairs really.

SisterAgatha · 09/01/2022 10:22

I say my friend first.

As I’ve done this in my head I realise that all my husbands friends are male then female first.

And all my friends are female then male first.

We have one couple who we know equally and I say Sam and Dan, he says Dan and Sam Grin

NashvilleQueen · 09/01/2022 10:22

100% it's the person I knew first as usually I have met the partner through them (and wouldn't know them but for their relationship).

With all the same sex couples I am friends with it's exactly the same. The first name is the one I know most.

RainbowZebraWarrior · 09/01/2022 10:24

Entertainment industry seems to work the opposite

This Morning with Phillip and Holly
Fred and Ginger
Sonny and Cher
Mr and Mrs the game show

Admittedly the latter examples are ancient, but most radio shows with a male / female duo often have the male name first

dotherighthing · 09/01/2022 10:24

So perhaps men say it the other way around.

No, for me also it’s who I am closest to.

BatshitBanshee · 09/01/2022 10:28

If related to me, I say the name of the direct relative first before I say their partners name. If friends, I say the name of my friend first. Sex has nothing to do with it for me.

StCharlotte · 09/01/2022 10:39

Fred and Ginger

I took my cats Fred and Ginger to the vet once. The young receptionist called out "Ginger and Fred" and everyone in the waiting room muttered "it's Fred and Ginger" Grin

TitsMcgeePlusThree · 09/01/2022 10:43

I always say the person I knew first, first. Unless it’s a couple who’ve split/divorced and dating someone new. Then I say the new persons name first to avoid accidentally saying the ex’s

WestendVBroadway · 09/01/2022 11:02

Well I think I would put the person I am closest to first. When writing out Christmas cards I would write from 'Jane and John' when sending to my family or friends, and from 'John and Jane ' on cards to DH family. Yes, I know DH should write his own bloody cards

Tlollj · 09/01/2022 11:14

Some names just flow together a certain way round I find. Suppose it’s who you know first or best.

Ninkanink · 09/01/2022 11:20

I say it differently depending on who it is.

I say ‘your mum and dad’ to DH when referring to PIL, and MIL’s name first if I’m talking to SIL.

If I’m addressing my siblings or referring to them I say my sibling’s name first, so man + woman in the case of my brothers or woman + man in the case of my sisters.

If I’m writing a card I sign my name first, then DH’s.

With friends I’d refer to the person I’m closest to first, so again might be the male or female.

SquirrelFan · 09/01/2022 11:22

Sometimes it's who I'm closest to; in other cases it's what "flows" better. Usually the name with one syllable is first!

AgentPeggyCarterRocks · 09/01/2022 11:29

Usually say my closest friend, relative first, then their partner. So, Sister and her husband, Cousin and his wife, that sort of thing. Exceptions would be where combinations of sounds don't flow, example Anthony and Cleopatra flows better than Cleopatra and Anthony.

bettertocryinamercedes · 09/01/2022 11:44

I do Female first unless it a male relative

Dh sometimes says the women first too - like in his friendship group but that's because he's known the two women since school

His work friends he says mr and mrs

Luredbyapomegranate · 09/01/2022 12:07

I think it used to be seen as polite - like letting women go through the door first.

merryhouse · 09/01/2022 14:44

I deliberately mix it up Grin

On Christmas cards I'll write the card the opposite way to the envelope.

I think it's interesting that we generally say "Mr and Mrs" but "mum and dad" etc.

GertrudePerkinsPaperyThing · 09/01/2022 14:49

Usually I put the woman first, yes

Except for my ex PIL for some reason! Always said FIL’s name first Blush

When they’re a gay couple I’m not sure what makes me choose the order. I seem to do it reverse alphabetical for some reason.

GertrudePerkinsPaperyThing · 09/01/2022 14:50

Oh maybe it is the one syllable name first for me too (in case of ex PIL or gay couples) come to think of it

MintJulia · 09/01/2022 14:51

I refer to them depending on which I know best or first. So my brother comes first in that pair. My female friends come first in their pairings.
