It has just dawned on me that when I refer to a man and woman couple, I always say the woman's name first. Such as "I am going to Sue and Johns", or "its in Carol and Bobs garage" etc. Is it just me or does everyone do this. I have no idea why I do it.

I've always thought it was a 'ladies first' etiquette kind of rule from way back when.

georgarina · 09/01/2022 14:56

I tend to say the shorter name first. Just flows better.

TeaSoakedDisasterMagnet · 09/01/2022 15:13

Depends entirely on the person in the couple that I know best. Some friends I say female name first, some I say male name first because I knew them first.
Same with family, my cousins for example would be Ian and Brenda, Mark and Cath, Susie and John, Eve and Martin. My family say my name first but DH family say his name first.

Livpool · 09/01/2022 15:16

It depends who I know (best), so my friend and her husband are 'her name and his name' and my cousin and his wife are 'his name and her name'

Mylittlepixie · 09/01/2022 15:18

I also say the one Im closest to first. My brother married a woman with the same name as my sister and my sister married a man with the same name as my brother..
When I talk about my sister its “sarah and john” and when i talk about my brother its “john and sarah” Grin
I actually never realised this until now!

DroopyClematis · 09/01/2022 17:05

As with others , depends on who is closest.

Regarding cards, presents etc... the ones to my family and friends are from Droopy and Him.
The ones to his family and friends are from Him and Droopy.

@PurpleDaisies

It depends on which one is my friend.
Yes, same. I always refer to my friend first.
Darbs76 · 09/01/2022 21:48

Just listed all my friends and yes I put the woman first, but then the women are my friends so perhaps that’s why

I'll usually call couples by one of their surnames when talking about them.

"I need to drop this off at the Graham's"
"Did the Appleby's say they were coming?"
"When are the Jones coming round again?"

Whether they're married/share a surname or not I'll just pick a Surname I prefer for them and call them that.
