Drinking and driving

Last night I went with my husband and his Mum to a concert. Between 6.30 and 9pm he drank 5 glasses of wine . I had one and a cup of tea. We came in his car and I offered to drive home. Back at the car my husband got into the driving seat and argued he was safe to drive home. It took me and my MIL’s combined efforts to get him to move over and let me drive. Including me walking away to get the train at one point. He then sulked for the whole journey home. AIBU? Was he safe to drive?

5 glasses of 125ml wine is going to be 7.5units (depending on the strength). That’s roughly 7.5 hours to clear. I guess it’s possible he went to the gym before 5am this morning but it’s not exactly likely…

Bullshit. My cousin drank 2 glasses of wine, got pulled over by police and banned from driving. Your husband is a dick if he thinks drinking and driving is appropriate.

Winebottle · 09/01/2022 11:38

That's only 2.5 large glasses. Over 2.5 hours, I'd say there's a good chance he would be under the limit.

It takes ten hours for one bottle of wine to exit your liver. I’d say he would have been over if stopped but we are all different. For me, it’s none for the road. You did the right thing. X

Thank you for standing up to him @Bruce123 , of course he was not fit to drive and he should apologies to you and your Dm for been a irresponsible dick

I really hope this was a one off and it is not something he does when there is no one there to keep a eye on him .

Many years ago I reported my own DH for drink driving because I knew he had gone to the pub when he finished work at about 2pm ( he phoned me at 4 pm saying he would be home at 5pm ) there is no way he he would be on soft drinks and the pub didn't sell tea/ coffee .
in that time frame he could easy drink 4 or 5 pints .
The police stopped him as he drove out of the car park along with two other guys all got points and sent on a drivers awareness course .

Dh knows it was me that reported him and he knows I have good reason to HATE drink drivers .

It’s almost a full bottle of wine. Do you really think most people wouldn’t be over the legal limit?

My cousin probably thought that too 😒 The police and courts had other ideas

She is not that supportive this morning… when I asked her to comment on last night. She said she’d rather not comment. Ostrich.

Id say to have got stuck in to the free wine to that extent, your dh has some problems around controlling his drinking. I would also say that the fact you were counting, suggests you already know there is an issue there, sorry.

BasiliskStare · 09/01/2022 19:30

I think it is fine for a partner to have 2 or 3 or even more glasses of wine during an evening - what I do not agree with is where was the pre evening conversation - are we driving - who is driving or do we get a cab.

So my post is nothing about alcholism or anything like that - just a sensible discussion I assumed most people have. If I am designated driver I don't drink a drop. Next time maybe DH driver and I can have a cocktail or a glass of wine or two. If we are going to something where we might both have a glass of wine or two - we get a taxi. I could not contemplate driving over the limit and something happening.

Blazing red flag OP. I’d be furious he’d be so flippant about the safety of those in the vehicle.
