To call in sick next week too?

user4533786 · 08/01/2022 22:52

I have been off work sick this week whilst waiting for PCR results due to having Covid symptoms.
My results took 4 days to come back and were negative. I phoned my manager to tell him my results to which he replied they took ages see you next week then.
I'm still not feeling 100% maybe I will be by Monday, My manager shows no care, I'm CEV so waiting for the results and coping with the symptoms has been hard not just physically but mentally too.
AIBU to phone in sick next week too? I just feel I need some time to prepare myself mentally to go back to my job Confused

OP posts:

Providing Sick note evidence has been extended to 28 days from a week to free up NHS resource on the Covid booster programme. I think it expires at the end of January.

OP - are you unwell enough to be needing a doctors note if the guidance had not been changed?

spotcheck · 08/01/2022 23:39
  1. Your manager is not your parent. They don't need to show 'care' while you are waiting for a test result
  2. A WEEK to mentally prepare to go back to work????? I am speechless. Lazy, entitled behaviour.
maddening · 08/01/2022 23:39

You can't self certify for more than a week, you would need a Dr's note surely?

Hairyfriend · 08/01/2022 23:40

What symptoms do you have? Why would you take another whole week off? Surely, you might feel better by tue, wed, thur etc??? Confused

maddening · 08/01/2022 23:40

And can you justify using a gp appointment to get that Dr's note? Do you think a Dr would agree that you are unwell?

HailAdrian · 08/01/2022 23:41

Typical wanky, narrow-minded mn responses here, sounds as though you need a new job OP.

Shellbear84 · 08/01/2022 23:42

Ummm slightly insensitive responses. Where is the self care responses? Just because it's not Covid doesn't mean the symptoms are any less. Being unwell can effect our mental health & maybe there is more going on for you than we know. As a manager in Mental Health, look after yourself and go back when YOU feel ready.

Vapeyvapevape · 08/01/2022 23:45

I had months and months off work after serious injuries and ptsd and had to prepare mentally to go back to work , the longer you're off Op the harder it will be to go back.
Is there something about your job that causes you stress?

WorraLiberty · 08/01/2022 23:46

I think as soon as Tuesday's rule change comes into force, where positive LFTs don't need to be confirmed with PCRs, some piss-takers will have a field day.

There are a few people at my DH's work who are already talking about faking test results to get a week off.

onedayiwillflyaway1 · 08/01/2022 23:47

@Crazycrazylady

Honestly you sound a bit precious.. who calls in sick bedside they want to 'mentally prepare' themselves. No wonder your managers annoyed with you.
Wow hope you are not a manager.
Usernamqwerty · 08/01/2022 23:50

See how you feel on Monday. You can always go in and see how you find it. Don't forget you can now self-certify as sick for up to 28 days. Hope you feel better soon x

Actually a manager has a duty of care for the people on their team. That's part of their job.
WorraLiberty · 08/01/2022 23:53

The OP has given no indication of her manager not carrying out that duty though.

Shellbear84 · 08/01/2022 23:56

I really am shocked as a new member at people's responses to this thread. Implying that everybody is a piss taker & milking the current situation. People have no idea what somebody else might be going through & come on here for help and support.

Kite22 · 08/01/2022 23:56

Going on what you have said, then yes, YABU. You can't call in sick because you want to "prepare yourself mentally to go to work" Confused

Of course, if your symptoms are making you too ill to be able to do your job, then YWNBU to phone in sick, just as at any other time of your life, but that is not what you have asked us.

Fair enough i was just responding to the post I quoted. It seemed a bit insensitive.
Macaroni46 · 08/01/2022 23:59

Why don't you just see how you feel on Monday and take it from there? But I don't see why you need another whole week off?
Also don't see that your manager did anything wrong. Your PCR was negative and you've already had a week off. That's quite a lot of absence already. I think people sometimes forget that you're paid to actually go to work!

Cerridwen83 · 08/01/2022 23:59

As a manager, I would be concerned to hear you feel like you need to mentally prepare yourself for a RTW and would want to address it with you, to ensure everything is OK.

MadeOfStarStuff · 09/01/2022 00:26

YABU

if you’re well enough to work then you should work. You’ve been off with a mild illness for a few days, you shouldn’t need to “mentally prepare” yourself to go back, certainly not by taking another week off, that’s taking the piss. If you hate your job then look for another one.

WorriedGiraffe · 09/01/2022 00:30

Based on what you have said YABU to take time off to ‘mentally prepare’.

NoSquirrels · 09/01/2022 00:32

The decision-making flow chart for calling in sick goes:

Are you unable to work effectively today?
Yes - call in sick
No - go to work

Only you know, OP. But I’d have considered it before I called my manager with the negative PCR. Having not expressed that you don’t feel fit to work at the time he said “See you next week” you basically committed yourself to going in.

DragonMamma · 09/01/2022 00:33

If I took time off to ‘mentally prepare’ for work, I doubt I’d ever be there. Sometimes you just need to woman up and get on with it - there’s actually nothing wrong with you!

BritWifeInUSA · 09/01/2022 00:34

Sounds like you’ve got the “Sunday dread” where you enjoyed being off work and the thought of the holiday time being over and going back to work sounds awful. Many people have this feeling. Even I do and I love my job. It’s usually gone by the time I get out of the shower on Monday morning though.

Dealing with the end of the fun holiday and getting back into the work routine is just part of life. Unless you are too unwell to do your job, you should go to work on Monday.

Theblacksheepandme · 09/01/2022 00:41

It doesn't sound like you're happy in work. The time you have had at home already probably makes you not want to go back in. The more you put off going in the worse it gets. Unless you are genuinely sick and can't attend work I would bite the bullet and go in. In the meantime take care of yourself by possibly looking for another job if you're unhappy. Maybe go to the doctor if your mental health is suffering due to work.

Ivalueloyaltyaboveallelse · 09/01/2022 00:43

Yabu your PCR is negative. You may of had a cold? But after a week you should be feeling well enough to go back to work. However If you do take another week off because you are still unwell, then you will need to supply a fit note.
